Edmond CAREW was born in prob Soloheadbeg area, Co. Tipperary. He died in prob Soloheadbeg area, Co. Tipperary. Edmond married Mary GAVIN about 1809.

I believe there's a connection between my great-great-grandfather, Edmond Carew, and Edmond above. It's possible he was a son of Edmond above: for one thing, the father of my great-great-grandfather was possibly named Edmond; also, the only baptismal record found by Tipperary Family History Research (TFHR) for an Edmond Carew in Solohead between 1809 when TFHR records begin, and 1831 when they end, relates to a baptism in 1820 where the father was Edmond Carew above. The year of baptism fits in roughly with the time my great-great-grandfather would have been born (based on that fact that his children were born between 1849 and 1869).

Another indication that my great-great-grandfather might be the son of Edmond Carew above and his wife, Mary Gavin is that one of the witnesses to his marriage in 1849 was Thomas Carey (Edmond, son of Edmond Carew and Mary Gavin, had a brother named Thomas). In addition, sponsors at the baptisms of my great-great-grandfather's two eldest children in 1849 and 1851 included William Carey, Mary Carey and Michael Carey (Edmond, son of Edmond Carew and Mary Gavin, had siblings named William, Mary and Michael). If my great-great-grandfather's parents were, in fact, Edmond Carew and Mary Gavin, the absence of Carew/Carey sponsors at the baptisms of his remaining seven children may possibly be explained by the emigration of his siblings. With the exception of Edmond, it's believed they all emigrated, most if not all going to Newfoundland, Canada. Growing up, and in correspondence with Carew/Carey relatives in Ireland during the course of my research, I never heard mention of any Newfoundland link to my family, but this doesn't necessarily mean that my great-great-grandfather's siblings didn't emigrate there.

But the above is no proof that my great-great-grandfather was a son of Edmond Carew and Mary Gavin, so for now, it's being assumed he wasn't. Any help in establishing a definite connection - or not - would be much appreciated.

Note: Marea-Leonie Carey Rossiter from Australia has contacted me to say that her great-grandfather, Edmund Carey, was born in Soloheadbeg and emigrated to Australia with his  wife, Mary Ann Priest, on the first steamship to Australia. Edmund's brother Timothy emigrated to the United States, their sister Mary married a George Hamm, and their brother Michael married a Maggie O'Brien (descendants of the O'Brien family live in Sydney). Edmund and Mary Ann had five children: Mary Ann, Edmund, Martha, Liz (Marea-Leonie's grandmother) and Jack. Although Edmund was born in Soloheadbeg, there's no evidence - yet - that he's related to Edmond Carew above (Carew and Carey are synonymous) or to my great-great-grandfather, Edmond Carew from Soloheadbeg.

Mary GAVIN was born about 1791 in prob. Soloheadbeg area, Co. Tipperary. She died 3 Mar 1863 in Newfoundland, Canada and was buried in Belvedere Cemetery, Newfoundland. Mary married Edmond CAREW about 1809.

Unfortunately we don't know anything about the Gavin family. There's a John Gavin listed in Griffiths Valuation (July 1851) for Soloheadbeg so perhaps Mary was a member of this family.

Note: The Gavin surname is quite numerous in south Leinster, north Munster, and Co. Mayo. It's derived from the Irish names Ó Gábháin and Ó Gáibhín. Originally there were septs in west Cork and in Mayo, but the name is now common to all provinces.

Sponsors at Honora's baptism were John Treacy and Alice Hayes.  

I have no further information on Honora although it's thought she may have emigrated.

I have no further information on Mary although it's thought she may have emigrated.

Patrick CAREW was born about 18 Feb 1820 in Soloheadbeg area, Co. Tipperary and was christened 18 Feb 1820 in Solohead, Co. Tipperary.

Patrick was Edmond's twin. Sponsors at Patrick's baptismal sponsors were Denis Treacy and Mary O'Dwyer.

I have no further information on Patrick although it's thought he may have emigrated.

The baptismal sponsor of Edmond above was Catherine Flinn (no other sponsor listed).

Thomas Suttles, a great-great-grandson of Edmond Carew and Mary Gavin, has kindly sent me a transcription of an interesting letter written in 1878 by John, one of the children of Edmond and Mary, to his sister, Nancy. John was living in Newfoundland and Nancy was living in the United States. In the letter, John mentions the death of his mother, Mary, in Newfoundland in 1863; reference is also made to a sister, Johanna, also in Newfoundland, a brother, Michael (whereabouts unknown), and the widow of another brother, Thomas, who was living on Prince Edward Island. John also mentions a relative who "was some time ago in Ireland and went to see brother Edward", indicating perhaps that Edmond (the name Edmond is interchangeable with Edward) was the only sibling not to have emigrated.
