Joseph was a coach builder. According to the 1901 census he was living at the time in John St. in the town of Sligo. Since all his children listed were born in Co. Leitrim, it appears he and his family moved from Co. Leitrim to Sligo not long after the birth in 1899 of his daughter Charlotte. By the time of the 1911 census the family was living in Swinford, Co. Mayo.

Mary RUTLEDGE [Parents] was born about 1858 in possibly Cloonmulligan, Co. Leitrim. She died about 1930. She was buried in Rhue Cemetery, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo. Mary married Joseph MORAHAN on 23 Feb 1879 in Jamestown Church, Co. Leitrim.

Bernard MORAHAN was born about 1825. He died on 29 Jun 1894 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Bernard married Bridget 'UNKNOWN'.

It is possible that Bernard's line of Morahans is connected to our Morahan family (from Cloonfeacle near Carrick-on-Shannon) but so far I have been unable to establish a link.

Bernard was a "car builder", according to his death certificate. It is likely he was related to James Morahan, a boat builder from Carrick-on-Shannon, who had a son named Michael Joseph Morahan (born 31 May 1877 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon. Michael moved to London where in 1911 he was working as a "sculptor - carver and modeller", according to 1911 census information. He had married Emily Mary McSwiney, daughter of John McSwiney, a "boot closer" from Lower Clapton, Hackney, London on 13 April 1899 in Hackney (in the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Dominic). Michael (who died in 1939) and Emily had seven children:

Dorothy (1899-1980)
Kathleen (1901-1994)
James (1902-1976)
Bernard (1904-1989)
Thomas Hugo (1906-1969)
Dermot (1908-?)
Margaret (1910-1998)

Thomas Hugo above went on to be a film designer and was nominated for an Oscar for art direction in the 1960 movie 'Sons and Lovers'. He married Nancy Barker and they had a son, Christopher, the stage and television director, who is the father of actress Hattie Morahan.

The fact that Bernard and his sons, Thomas and Joseph, were coach builders and that James and his son Michael Joseph were a boat builder and sculptor respectively, professions not unrelated to coach building, makes me think their two families may have been connected. Bernard's family may also have been related to John Morahan (born in the Carrick-on-Shannon area around the 1830s or 1840s), who was a boat builder.
