Eugene was born on 6 April 1893, but according to baptismal information from the Mallow Heritage Centre, he was christened on 3 April. Sponsors at Eugene's baptism were John Doody and Ellen Cashman. The given name on Eugene's baptism certificate is "Owen" ("Owen" is an equivalent of "Eugene"). In the 1901 census, Eugene is listed as "Ewen".

Eugene went to Australia on assisted passage as a young man. Because he worked on board ship, unlike a lot of the other men, he was fit when he arrived in Australia and consequently got a job quickly as a farm labourer (sugar cane farm?) in Queensland. After a number of years in Innisfail, near Cairns, in Queensland, he moved to the Sydney area and lived in Wahroonga with his wife, Jane, their daughter, Mary, and Mary's family. He never returned to Ireland.

Jane MCCLELLAND? was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She died 22 Sep 1994 in Sydney, Australia. Jane married Eugene O'SULLIVAN.
