John HEWITT [Parents] was born about 1865 in probably Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary. He died 6 Nov 1930 in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary and was buried in Finnoe, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary. John married Bridget O'CONNELL about 1895 in possibly Co. Cork.

John, who was from Oldcourt, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary, was a sergeant with the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary). He served in Co. Tipperary for 28 years prior to his retirement.

According to John's obituary in the Nenagh Guardian, the chief morners at his funeral, besides his wife, children and grandchild Mel, were as follows:

"Mr. W. D. O'Connell, Cork (brother-in-law); Mrs. O'Farrell, Cork (sister-in-law); Rev. W. O'Farrell, Jeremiah O'Farrell, Dan, Chris and Ned O'Connell, Tim O'Relihan, Cork (nephews); Dan Starr, Mrs. P. Darcy (cousins); Miss J. Molyneux, Miss N. O'Connell, Cork (nieces); Mr. and Mrs. O'Toolan, Clonmel, Miss E. Sweeney, Galway (cousins)".

Note from Helen: I'm told that either John or his wife, Bridget (née O'Connell) was related to my grandfather Thomas Treacy or my grandmother Ellen Treacy (née O'Sullivan) but I have been unable to determine the exact connection. It appears more likely that I am related to Bridget as she came from Morneabbey, Co. Cork where my grandmother Ellen was born.

Bridget O'CONNELL was born about 1876 in Mourneabbey, Co. Cork. She died Feb 1942 in Birr, Co. Offaly and was buried in Finnoe, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary. Bridget married John HEWITT about 1895 in possibly Co. Cork.

According to the 1911 census, Bridget and her husband, John, had eight children born alive, seven of whom were still alive at the time of the census. The family was living in the townland of Sallybog in Kilcooly, Co. Tipperary in 1911 but later settled in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary. Sometime after John's death in 1930 Bridget moved to Townsend House, Birr, Co. Offaly.

Marriage Notes:

An unsuccessful attempt was made to locate a record of the marriage of a John Hewitt and a Bridget O'Connell in Mourneabbey, Co. Cork where our Bridget was from. It therefore appears our John and Bridget were not married in Mourneabbey.
