John HEWITT was born about 1865 in probably Oldcourt, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary. He died on 6 Nov 1930 in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary. He was buried in Finnoe, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary. John married Bridget O'CONNELL about 1894.

John, who was from Oldcourt, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary, was a sergeant with the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary). He served in Co. Tipperary for 28 years prior to his retirement.

A John Hewitt was born in Oldcourt, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary on 21 Apr 1864 to James Hewitt and Mary Cormack. I think it likely that this is our John above.

According to John's obituary in the Nenagh Guardian, the chief mourners at his funeral, besides his wife, children and grandchild Mel, were as follows:

"Mr. W. D. O'Connell, Cork (brother-in-law); Mrs. O'Farrell, Cork (sister-in-law); Rev. W. O'Farrell, Jeremiah O'Farrell, Dan, Chris and Ned O'Connell, Tim O'Relihan, Cork (nephews); Dan Starr, Mrs. P. Darcy (cousins); Miss J. Molyneux, Miss N. O'Connell, Cork (nieces); Mr. and Mrs. O'Toolan, Clonmel, Miss E. Sweeney, Galway (cousins)".

It is likely that Dan Starr above is Daniel Star (sic) who was born on 5 March 1867 in Borrisokane to Michael Star and Dora Hewitt. Daniel had a twin brother named Michael and an older sister named Elizabeth (Bessie) who was born on 16 April 1865.

Note from Helen: I am told that either John or his wife, Bridget (née O'Connell) was probably related to my grandfather Thomas Treacy or my grandmother Ellen Treacy (née O'Sullivan) but I have been unable to determine the exact connection, if one actually exists. It appears more likely that I am related to Bridget rather than John as Bridget came from Mourneabbey, Co. Cork where my grandmother Ellen was born. However, I have not managed to find a connection between the O'Connells and O'Sullivans. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com. Thank you.

Bridget O'CONNELL was born about 1876 in Mourneabbey, Co. Cork. She died on 23 Feb 1942 in Townsend House, Birr, Co. Offaly. She was buried in Finnoe, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary. Bridget married John HEWITT about 1894.

According to the 1911 census, Bridget and her husband, John, had eight children born alive, seven of whom were still alive at the time of the census. The family was living in the townland of Sallybog in Kilcooly, Co. Tipperary in 1911 but later settled in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary. Sometime after John's death in 1930 Bridget moved to Townsend House, Birr, Co. Offaly.

Marriage Notes:

An unsuccessful attempt was made to locate a record of the marriage of a John Hewitt and a Bridget O'Connell in Mourneabbey, Co. Cork where our Bridget was from. It therefore appears our John and Bridget were not married in Mourneabbey.

They had the following children.

  F i
Mary A. HEWITT was born on 29 May 1895 in O'Brien St., Mallow, Co. Cork.

Mary joined the Ursuline order, becoming Sr. M. Mel. She lived in Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

James was a policeman and was known to be serving in Kilbarron, Co. Tipperary in 1930. He then decided to become a brother in the Holy Ghost order (his older brother Patrick was already a priest in the order) and was professed in Kilshane, Co. Tipperary in 1934. After short periods in Kimmage in Dublin and Chevilly in France, Br. Patrick, as he was by then known, returned to Kimmage where he spent the next nine years working mainly on tending the furnace. In 1946 he requested a transfer to Blackrock College in Dublin where he held a number of positions, including ground staff manager.

Michael MCENERY [Parents] was born in probably Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in probably between 1886 and 1888 in probably Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Michael married Mary HUDSON on 25 Feb 1868 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

According to Griffiths Valuation records, Michael's wife, Mary, became the lessee of their Tubbertureen farm in 1888, which probably means that Michael had died before then. As Michael's youngest child was born in January 1887 we are assuming that Michael died between 1886 and 1888.

Around 1909 the farm had been purchased by the family and was held in the names of Michael and Mary's sons, Edmund (76 acres) and Jeremiah (64 acres). It is perhaps surprising that Michael and Mary's only other surviving son to remain in Ireland does not appear to have been given a portion of the land, especially as he was older than Jeremiah. However, around 1910, Edmund gave or sold his farm to a Denis McEnery, who we are assuming to be Edmund's brother Denis.

Note: I have seen McEnery spelled sometimes as McEniry.

Mary HUDSON [Parents] was born about 1846 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died in possibly 7 Mar 1916 in Tubberturreen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Mary married Michael MCENERY on 25 Feb 1868 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

We are basing Mary's approximate year of birth on excerpts from the 1851 census of Ireland which were used in determining eligibility for the old age pension, which was introduced in Ireland in 1908. From this data it appears that Mary was born about 1846.

According to the 1911 census, Mary had 11 children born alive, seven of whom were alive at the time of the census.

A Mary McEnery, a widow, died in Tubbertureen on 7 March 1916 of gastritis aged 75. The informant was her son Denis of Tubbertureen. It is likely that this Mary McEnery was our Mary above.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Edmund Hudson and John Stack.

Thomas MCENERY was born about 18 Dec 1868 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 20 Dec 1868 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly before 2 Apr 1911 in probably Australia.

Sponsors at Thomas's baptism were William Hudson and Bridget Connor.

We are told that Thomas emigrated to Australia. It is believed that he died before April 1911 as the Irish census of that year tells us that Thomas's parents had 11 children born alive, seven of whom were still alive at the time of the census but we believe that these did not include Thomas. Whereas we have evidence of seven being alive after the 1911 census (Mary Ann, John, Edmund, Johanna, Bridget, Denis and Jeremiah), we have not come across any proof that Thomas was still alive after this time.
