Michael FINUCANE was born about 1854 in Co. Kerry. He died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Gale Bridge, Cuss, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Michael married Bridget CARMODY on 29 Nov 1883 in Listowel registration district, Co. Kerry.

I have been told that Michael was a brother of Bill Finucane of Clounprohus, Moyvane, who was married to a member of my O'Connor family. However, I have been unable to verify this. If anyone has any information on a connection between Michael and Bill, or between the Clounprohus and Gale Bridge Finucanes, I would be very grateful if you would get in touch. Please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.

A descendant of Michael's remembers hearing in his youth that their family was related to Wing Commander Brendan Eamonn Fergus/Fitzpatrick (known as Paddy) Finucane, a decorated R.A.F. pilot who was killed during World War II when his plane was shot down over the English Channel. This is supported in a short article on Paddy in The Kerryman of 19 November 1966 which states that "it is thought that his father or grandfather came from the Gale Bridge area of Moyvane". However, it appears this is untrue as his father was born in India and his paternal grandfather in Scotland (this information comes from the 1901 census of Ireland). Other information we have about Paddy is that he was born in Rathmines in Dublin on 16 October 1920, the eldest of five children of Thomas Andrew Finucane and Engish-born Florence Louisa Robinson. Thomas had fought in the 1916 Rising alongside Eamon De Valera at Boland's Mill and had married Florence in Leicester on 11 October 1919. From their marriage certificate we know that Thomas was a bank clerk from 198 Clonliffe Road, Drumcondra, Dublin and Florence was a boot lace maker from 6 Osborne Road, Leicester. The certificate also tells us that Charles, Thomas's father, was a clerk and was deceased, and Florence's father was named Arthur and worked as a bricklayer.

Paddy's siblings were Raymond (Ray), Kevin, Monica and Claire. The family appears to have lived in various parts of Dublin, including Drumcondra, Rathmines, Cabra and/or Clontarf, before moving in 1936 to London which offered better employment opportunities for Thomas. The 1939 Register tells us they were living at the time at 26 Castlegate, Richmond, Surrey. From newspaper articles following Paddy's death on 15 July 1942 we know that Charles, his paternal grandfather, had served with the British army in India and the North West Frontier, and that Paddy had an aunt named Eileen who lived in Southampton and a nephew, Brendan Finucane QC, who was a judge in London. We also learn that Paddy excelled in sport at school.

At the time of his death Paddy, aged only 21, had brought down a record 32 German aircraft. He is remembered on Panel 64 of the RAF memorial at Runnymede near Windsor that commemorates over 20,000 R.A.F. airmen who went missing over Europe during World War II. An apartment block in his English home town of Richmond was named Finucane Court in his honour, and a nationwide appeal resulted in the bequeathing of the Finucane Ward to the Richmond Royal Hospital. If anyone has any information on a connection between Paddy's family and that of Michael above, I would be delighted if you would contact me.
