Margaret SHANAHAN was born on 24 May 1876 in Dirreen, Athea, Co. Limerick.

Thomas MCENERY died in Dec 1875 in Tubbertureen, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Thomas married Johanna GALVIN in 1833.

Many thanks go to Tom McEnery of New York City and Tom Moloney of Duagh, Co. Kerry for so much of the information you see below on the McEnery family of Tubbertureen, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Note that there are various older spellings of Tubbertureen, including Toberatoreen and Toberatureen.

If we go by Griffiths Valuation, carried out in 1852 for Co. Kerry, it appears that the family of Thomas above were the only McEnerys occupying land in Tubbertureen at that time. Griffiths tells us that Thomas leased three parcels of land in Tubbertureen: the home plot was 94 acres and he also leased a plot of seven acres and one of 152 acres. In the following years he increased his holding to a total of 688 acres. Although much of this was bog, it was a considerable farm for an Irish tenant farmer of the time. Although Thomas died in 1875 his name is crossed out in the valuation revision of 1872, replaced by the names of his sons, Denis and Michael, so it appears Thomas had handed over the running of the farm to his sons by 1872.

Note from Helen: Although I am not directly connected to Thomas's family, two members of my Hudson family from Kilbaha, Newtownsandes married descendants of Thomas: Mary Hudson married Thomas's son Michael in 1868, and Mary's niece Mag Hudson married Michael's nephew Den McEnery in 1916. Through my research into the Hudsons I came across much information on the McEnery family of Tubbertureen which is included on this website for McEnery researchers.

Johanna GALVIN died in Deceased. Johanna married Thomas MCENERY in 1833.

They had the following children.

F i Bridget MCENERY was born on 30 May 1834. She died.
F ii Margaret MCENERY was born on 22 Sep 1836.
M iii Michael MCENERY died in probably between 1886 and 1888.
M iv Denis MCENERY was born about 5 Jan 1840. He died in probably before 1893.
F v Catherine MCENERY was born on 26 May 1849. She died in probably before 2 April 1911 .

Michael HAYES [Parents] was born in Fairy Street, Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. He died in probably 1887. Michael married Catherine BROUDER on 25 Feb 1854 in Athea, Co. Limerick.

Michael may have died in 1887 as civil records show the death of a Michael Thomas Hayes in Newcastle registration district. He was 80 years of age. Valuation records show that  occupancy of the family farm was passed from Michael to his son Thomas in 1889 (changes were often recorded late) so it is likely that the Michael who died in 1887 was our Michael above.

Catherine BROUDER was born in Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. She died in possibly 1889. Catherine married Michael HAYES on 25 Feb 1854 in Athea, Co. Limerick.

Catherine was a neighbour of Michael's growing up.

John MOLONEY [Parents] was born on 22 Dec 1876 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 23 Dec 1876 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died on 10 Mar 1950 in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Abbeyfeale (probably Old Abbey Cemetery), Co. Limerick. John married Julia BRODERICK (BRODER) on 24 Feb 1906 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry.

John's baptismal sponsors were John Moloney and Bridget Hudson.

John farmed in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. When John died the farm passed to his son-in-law Gerard Giltenane. Around 1955 Gerard sold the farm to his wife's uncle James Moloney (i.e., a brother of John) and in 1969 James passed it to his son Ted.

Julia BRODERICK (BRODER) [Parents] was born on 13 Jan 1872 in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 15 Jan 1872 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. Julia and John lived on the 40-acre Broderick family farm in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. The farm eventually passed to John's nephew Ted Moloney.

  F ii
Mary Ann BRODERICK was born about 1880 in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry.

Timothy CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) [Parents] was born in possibly about 1800s in Co. Limerick; or Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Timothy married Mary GRIFFIN (caution: not verified).

Mary GRIFFIN (caution: not verified) died. Mary married Timothy CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified).

I am assuming, although I have no firm proof, that Mary was the wife of our Timothy Cunningham. I am basing my assumption on a baptismal record located for a Dermot Cunningham, son of a Timothy Cunningham and a Mary Griffin of Kilbaha, who was baptised on 26 November 1841 (the sponsor was Winifred Cunningham).

James HARRINGTON was born about 1830. He died in between 31 Mar 1901 and 2 Apr 1911 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. James married Johanna CUNNINGHAM on 19 Feb 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I have been told that James Harrington above, husband of Johanna Cunningham, may have come from Irremore, Listwel, Co. Kerry. Our Johanna's husband's name was definitely James Harrington and the Cunningham family of Kilbaha certainly had connections with Irremore in that a distant Cunningham cousin of Johanna's, Bishop John Francis Cunningham, was born in Irremore and encouraged several members of Johanna's extended family to join him in Kansas to enter religious life.

Note: A Mary Harrington of Kilbaha, Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry emigrated to the United States in 1899 aged 25, joining her brother (whose first name or initial is illegible on the ship manifest) at 374 Lexington Avenue in Brooklyn. Could Mary have been a daughter or granddaughter of James and Johanna?

Johanna CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born about 21 Nov 1823 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 23 Nov 1823 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. She died in between 31 Mar 1901 and 2 Apr 1911 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Johanna married James HARRINGTON on 19 Feb 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Denis Harrington and Mary Harrington.

They had the following children.

F i Bridget HARRINGTON was born about 8 Jan 1853. She died.

Honora HARRINGTON was born about 23 Jan 1854 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 25 Jan 1854 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in probably before 13 Nov 1856.

No baptismal sponsors are recorded on Hanora's baptismal record. Hanora must have died as an infant because her parents had another daughter about three years later whom they named Hanora.
F iii Johanna HARRINGTON was born about 1855.
F iv Honora (Nora) HARRINGTON was born about 13 Nov 1856. She died in between 31 Mar 1901 and 2 Apr 1911.

Ann's baptismal sponsors were Daniel Stack and Honora Stack.
F ix Ellen HARRINGTON was born about 10 Nov 1865. She died.
  M x
Cornelius HARRINGTON was born on 11 Dec 1867 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 Dec 1867 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Cornelius's baptismal sponsors were Edmund Stack and Ann Kelly.

Michael (Mikey) FITZGERALD died on 9 Feb 1977 in Tralee, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Lislaughtin Abbey, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Michael married Jane MADDEN.

Mikey was from Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Fitzgerald researchers may be interested in the following, who may or may not be related to Mikey:

A Richard Fitzgerald of Lenamore who died on 1 February 1927 aged 75 is buried in Killehenny Cemetery along with his wife, Julia who died 4 July 1954. Another Richard Fitzgerald from Lenamore is buried in Murhur Cemetery beside his wife, Mary Bridget. Richard died aged 78 on 16 October 1971 in hospital in Listowel and Mary Bridget died aged 84 on 19 July 1975 in hospital in Tralee. They were survived by sons and daughters, and Richard was survived by brothers and a sister. Richard, who had a life-long interest in horses, passed his farm on to a son. Could one of his sons have been Tom Fitzgerald of Lenamore who died on 14 Ocober 1997 and is also buried in Murhur Cemetery. Tom's wife's name was Nora (maiden name unknown) and, at the time of his death, he left sons, daughters (including Maria, a primary school teacher), a brother (Eddie who died in England in 1996) and sisters (including Mrs. Ned Collins of Lenamore). Tom kept greyhounds.

I am also told of a John Fitzgerald from Lenamore who owned St. John's Tavern in Archway in London many years ago.

Jane MADDEN [Parents] was born on 1 Feb 1905 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died on 22 Dec 1985 in Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare. She was buried in Lislaughtin Abbey, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Jane married Michael (Mikey) FITZGERALD.

Jane and her husband, Mikey, lived on Well St. in Ballylongford.

They had the following children.

  F i Living.

Daniel (Danny) MADDEN [Parents] was born on 3 Jun 1896 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 4 Jun 1896 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He died on 25 Jul 1971 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. Daniel married Kathleen MORAN in 1949.

Danny's baptismal sponsors were Edmond Madden and Margaret Ahern.

Kathleen MORAN died on 19 Jan 1987 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. Kathleen married Daniel (Danny) MADDEN in 1949.
