James HARRINGTON was born about 1898 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

We know of a James Harrington, known as Sonny, who lived in the old Harrington family home in Kilbaha and later on Bridge Road in Listowel and who died on 18 January 1980. Sonny had a sister named Hannah who was married to a Mr. Shanahan, so it's very likely that Sonny was James above. We also know that Sonny had a Harrington uncle who emigrated to Australia (possibly settling in Victoria) around the 1880s. This uncle married and had a family, including a son named James.

Matthew HARRINGTON was born about 21 Jul 1904 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 23 Jul 1904 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died date unknown.

From a search of Ellis Island records, it appears Matthew emigrated to the United States in 1923. However Matthew's father's name on the ship manisfest is given as Thomas (of Kilbaha) rather than James Harrington. Nevertheless, given the Kilbaha connection and the fact that both our Matthew and the Matthew from the Ellis Island record were 19 years of age and had a brother named Patrick who had already emigrated to the States (the Ellis Island record tells us that Matthew was joining his brother Patrick of 154 East 97th St. in New York), I'm inclined to believe the father's name on the Ellis Island record is an error and that it was our Matthew above who emigrated to the United States in 1923.

However there's a complication in that I have come across a Matthew Harrington of Kilbaha who married a Jane (Janie) Egan from Tarbert, Co. Kerry about 1900. She was a daughter of John Egan and Catherine McMahon who, it appears, emigrated to Chicago when their children were young (this from a RootsWeb posting relating to the Egan family). It's possible this Matthew was our Matthew above. If so, Matthew and Janie may have returned to Ireland as a Matthew Harrington of Kilbaha, who died on 5 November 1973, is buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane; and in a separate grave in the same cemetery is buried Janie Harrington (née Egan) of Kilbaha, who died on 27 February 1973.
