James JOHNSTON [Parents] was born about 1835. He died on 5 Jul 1897 in St. Patrick's Hospital, Cork. James married Mary Anne 'UNKNOWN'.

I was told James may have been a Church of Ireland clergyman. However, from the marriage certificate of his daughter Maria (who married in a Catholic church) we know he worked as a butler. Perhaps it was an ancestor of James who was a clergyman.

James died of cancer of the jaw.

Mary Anne 'UNKNOWN' was born about 1840. She died on 29 Dec 1899 in 30 Mary St., Cork. She was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Cork. Mary married James JOHNSTON.

The informant on Mary Anne's death certificate was Maria Barrett, her daughter, who was living at the time at 26 Fuller's Lane, Cork. Mary Anne's occupation was "lodging house keeper" and she died of "morbus cordis" (heart disease).

They had the following children.

F i Maria JOHNSTON was born about 1862. She died before 14 Jul 1945.

'unknown' JOHNSTON died.

He had the following children.

M i James JOHNSTON was born about 1835. He died on 5 Jul 1897.
M ii Michael JOHNSTON was born about 1840. He died after 2 Apr 1911.

Michael JOHNSTON [Parents] was born about 1840 in Co. Carlow or Co. Kildare. He died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Dublin. He was buried in Prospect Cemetery, Glasnevin, Dublin. Michael married Elizabeth 'UNKNOWN' about 1880.

Michael's county of birth is given as Carlow in the 1901 census and Kildare in the 1911 census. According to family lore the Johnstons were a Church of Ireland family. However, Michael describes himself as Roman Catholic in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Could it be that Michael converted to Catholicism when he married his Catholic wife, Elizabeth?

Michael, who lived at 3 Ontario Terrace, Rathmines, Dublin, worked as a gardener. He may also have owned or managed properties in Dublin as the following advertisements indicate:

From The Irish Times of 16 July 1895: "To Let for Grazing, for the season, four statute acres at Sunbury Gardens, Rathmines. Apply Mr M Johnston, 3 Ontario Terrace, Rathmines or at 36 College Green." and

From The Freeman's Journal of 11 May 1899: "To Let Four Roomed Cottage, North Strand, Dublin, large garden, new sewerage; 8s 6d weekly. Apply M Johnston, 3 Ontario Terrace, Rathmines."

A Michael Johnston died in the registration district of Dublin South in the third quarter of 1929 aged 90 (giving an estimated birth year of 1839). It is possible that this is our Michael above.

Elizabeth 'UNKNOWN' was born about 1838 in Co. Tipperary. She died after 2 Apr 1911. Elizabeth married Michael JOHNSTON about 1880.

According to the 1911 census Elizabeth and Michael had been married for 30 years and had no children.

An Elizabeth Johnston died in the registration district of Dublin South in the first quarter of 1929 aged 90 (giving an estimated year of birth of 1838, which ties in with our Elizabeth's year of birth calculated from census returns). It is possible that this is our Elizabeth above.
