Maurice O'CONNOR died. Maurice married Elizabeth KEANE.

Many thanks go to Michael O'Connor in Co. Wexford, a great-grandson of Maurice O'Connor above for the information you see below on the O'Connor family of Dirreen in Athea and Lisaniskea in Knockanure.

Maurice farmed in Athea Lower. It appears he was related to my own O'Connor family, who I am told moved from Dirreen Lower, Athea, Co. Limerick to Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (now renamed Moyvane) in the mid-19th century. One link is through the family of Maurice's relative Ned O'Connor (who married Mary Flavin) of Sallowglen, Tarbert, whose son Ned was a frequent visitor to the Lislaughtin home of Michael O'Connor, a great-grandson of Maurice's.  My own O'Connor family is also related to the Sallowglen O'Connors, Ned (who married Mary Flavin) having been an uncle of my father's.

Apart from the O'Connor connection, another possible link between the two familes could be through the Daltons of Dirreen, Athea: Maurice's family was related to a Dalton family of Dirreen (whose more recent members included a 'Blot' Dalton of Athea) while my great-great-grandmother was supposedly Mary Dalton of Dirreen.

The main burial plot for Maurice's family is in the old cemetery in Knockanure, which was also the cemetery used by by own O'Connor family. The earliest inscriptions on the headstone read as follows:

Erected by Mrs. P. Mullane in memory of her father John O'Connor who died on 13 April 1852 aged 96 years, and her mother Mary O'Connor who died 24 January 1861 aged 93 years. The dates and ages indicate that John was born around 1755 and Mary around 1767. However, we do not know how exactly John and Mary O'Connor were related to Maurice. I would be delighted if anyone with information about John and Mary, or Mrs. Mullane, would get in touch. Please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com.
