Bryan Patrick CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born on 20 Dec 1828 in Co. Limerick. He died on 29 Dec 1910 in 1630 Liberty, Kansas City, Missouri. He was buried in Mount St. Mary's Cemetery, Kansas City. Bryan married Margaret SCANLON on 1 Jan 1857 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Bryan lived in Mountcoal, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry prior to emigrating to the United States in 1860. Bryan lived with his young family in Atchison, Kansas initially before settling in Kansas City, Missouri in 1867. According to 'Kansas City, Missouri: its history and its people 1808-1908, Volume 3' (1908) by Carrie Westlake Whitney, 'In 1879 he purchased one hundred and sixty-two and a half feet fronting on Liberty at the corner of Seventeenth Street, erected here a hotel and in 1884 built five cottage homes on the balance of his land. He has since continued in the hotel business.

According to an article in The Kerryman newspaper of 30 October 1915 on Bryan's brother Bishop John Cunningham of Concordia, Bryan was "one-time Mayor of Kansas".

In Bryan's will, dated 11 November 1907, when he had estimated the value of his property to be $42,000, he left $10,000 each to Ellen, Maggie, Anna and Bernard; and 'as they had already been provided for' he left just $10 each to his other two surviving children, Thomas and Catherine. $1,000 was left to each of two grandchildren, and a final $1,000 was to be allocated for a monument for his wife and hismself.  

Note: Bryan is listed as Patrick in some U.S. censuses.

Margaret SCANLON [Parents] was born about 1838 in probably Tarbert, Co. Kerry. She died on 8 Nov 1893 in Kansas City, Missouri. Margaret married Bryan Patrick CUNNINGHAM on 1 Jan 1857 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Of the 12 children born to Margaret and Bryan only six were alive by 1910: Kate, Thomas (who died in 1914), Nellie, Maggie, Anna and Bernard.

Witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Kelly and Cornelius Farrell.

John B. CUNNINGHAM was born about 7 Jul 1859 in Mountcoal, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 9 Jul 1859 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. He died on 17 Jul 1885 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John, who grew up in Kansas City, was ordained a priest in June 1885 in Louvain, Belgium. Shortly after his ordination he travelled from Louvain to Listowel to visit his grandfather, John Cunningham. However, while in Ireland he became seriously ill and died not long afterwards. His headstone in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane reads:

Bernard (Ben) J. CUNNINGHAM was born about 1877 in Kansas City, Missouri. He died on 16 Aug 1971 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ben lived in Kansas City, Missouri. He was unmarried at the time of the 1930 census when he was 53 years old and working as an inspector for the Department of Agriculture. He was living at the time with his three unmarried sisters, Nellie, Margaret and Anna in the Cunningham family home at 1630 Liberty, Kansas City. Ten years later all four had moved to 'West 67th St. Terr' in Kansas City, which they owned - or Nellie owned, as she is is listed as the head of the household. Ben was working at that time as a meat inspector.

James CUNNINGHAM was born on 26 Apr 1882 in Kansas City, Missouri. He died in probably Kansas City, Missouri.

James died as a child.

Catherine (Kate) CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born about 14 Jan 1858 in Mountcoal, Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 16 Jan 1858 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She died in 1952 in U.S.. Catherine married 'unknown' FINUCANE.


Thomas Benjamin CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born about 1861 in Mountcoal, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He died in Nov 1914 in Kansas City, Missouri. Thomas married Theresa SAGE.

Thomas lived in Kansas City, Missouri. At the time of the 1880 census he was working as a bartender, presubly in his father's boarding house/saloon.

Theresa SAGE died. Theresa married Thomas Benjamin CUNNINGHAM.


Patrick CRONIN [Parents] was born in probably Knockalougha, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died about 1900. Patrick married Johanna FITZGERALD on 30 Jul 1895 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

According to his marriage record, Patrick's place of residence was 'Knockalacca'. Presumably this was Knockalougha which is in Duagh, Co. Kerry.

Johanna FITZGERALD [Parents] was born about 4 May 1860 in Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 6 May 1860 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. Johanna married Patrick CRONIN on 30 Jul 1895 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

One of Johanna and Patrick's daughters joined the Mercy order, becoming Sr. M. Patricia and serving in Camberwell in London. However, we do not know if this was Margaret or Catherine. Sr. Patricia was the only surving child of Johanna and Patrick following the death of their son Jack in 1973.

They had the following children.

  M i John (Jack) CRONIN was born on 21 Dec 1896. He died on 6 Nov 1973.

Patrick (Pat) Leo CRONIN was born on 13 Dec 1897 in Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 15 Dec 1897 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. He died on 16 Feb 1970 in Los Angeles. He was buried on 19 Feb 1970 in Los Angeles National Cemetery.

Pat attended St. Michael's College, Listowel prior to studying philosophy at St. Patrick's College, Carlow. In 1919 he went to the United States where he studied at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, and was ordained on 11 June 1922 in Lincoln, Kansas. During World War II he served as a chaplain in Europe for the U.S. Army.

According to an article in the Kerryman newspaper of 23 September 1961 on the dedication of the new Church of Our Lady of Fatima and St. Senan in Irremore, Pat donated a Rosary window to the new church in memory of his granduncle, Bishop John Cunningham of Concordia, Kansas.

Pat was living in Los Angeles at the time of his death.

Margaret Mary CRONIN was born about 18 Aug 1899 in Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 20 Aug 1899 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She died.

Either Margaret or her sister, Catherine, entered the convent, becoming Sr. M. Patricia of the Mercy order. She lived in Camberwell, London.

Catherine CRONIN was born about 2 Nov 1900 in Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 4 Nov 1900 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She died.

Either Catherine or her sister, Margaret, entered the convent, becoming Sr. M. Patricia of the Mercy order. She lived in Camberwell, London.

John CRONIN died.

He was buried in Kilshinane Cemetery, Listowel, Co. Kerry. John married Margaret O'CONNELL on 14 Feb 1925 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

Jack lived in Irremore.

Margaret O'CONNELL [Parents] died before 6 Nov 1973. Margaret married John (Jack) CRONIN on 14 Feb 1925 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

Margaret, who was from Toornageehy in Lixnaw, was a teacher.
