John CARROLL died.

He had the following children.

  M i Jeremiah J. CARROLL died on 27 Sep 1918.

Matthew RYAN [Parents] was born on 10 Jun 1868 in Co. Tipperary. He died on 13 Feb 1946 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Matthew married Ellen (Ellie) DOODY on 6 Feb 1894 in Tipperary town.

Matthew's marriage certificate (1894) tells us that he was a commercial traveller at the time, resident in Carlow, Co. Carlow and that his father, a farmer, was also named Matthew.

According to the 1901 census, (the younger) Matthew and his wife, Ellen, and their family were living at that time on George's St. in Cork city. The census also tells us that Matthew was a shopkeeper and he is described as a shopkeeper on the birth certificates of his elder children. However, on the birth certificate of his son Richard and daughter Helena who was born in Cork in 1906 and 1908 respectively, he is described as a "driver" and "traveller" respectively. By the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to Belfast (Gamble St.) where Matthew was working as a "brewer's carter". The 1911 census also tells us that Matthew and Ellen had 11 children born alive, two of whom had died. We also know, from a family source, that Matthew later worked as a shopkeeper in Belfast and then ran a bar and hotel that had the word 'Eagle' in its name.

In the 1930s Matthew and Ellen moved to England, settling in St. Albans. We know from the 1939 Register that they were living in September of that year at 71 Burnham Road, St. Albans, Hertfordshire.

Ellen (Ellie) DOODY [Parents] was born on 27 May 1869 in Ardnamoher, Galbally, Co. Limerick. She died on 3 Sep 1954 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Ellen married Matthew RYAN on 6 Feb 1894 in Tipperary town.

The 1939 Register gives a birth date for Ellie of 18 September 1866 which does not tie in with the birth date of 27 May 1869 provided by a fmily source.

According to her marriage certificate (1894) Ellie was a shopkeeper and lived on Henry St., Tipperary.

They had the following children.

M i Matthew Joseph RYAN was born on 23 Feb 1895. He died in 1969.
F ii Catherine (Kathleen) RYAN was born in 1896. She died in 1992.
  M iii
Michael Francis RYAN was born about 1897 in Cork city. He died on 12 Aug 1942 in Mediterranean Sea.

Michael, a fireman and trimmer with the Merchant Navy during World War II, was lost at sea in 1942 while serving on the S.S. Clan Ferguson (Glasgow). The steamer was a member of the Operation Pedestal convoy sailing from Scotland to Malta when she was sunk off the Tunisian coast by torpedoes and aerial bombs. Michael is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial (panel 30), which is located on the south side of the garden of Trinity Square, London, close to The Tower of London. The Memorial commemorates men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both world wars and who have no known grave.

  M vii

  F viii
Helena (Lena) Margaret L. RYAN was born on 12 Aug 1908 in Cork city. She died in 1958 in Montreal, Canada.

Lena is listed in the 1939 Register with her sister Monica. They were living at the time at 123 Mansfield Road, St. Pancras, London; Lena was working as a "Clerk (Cinema Cafe [what looks like] Catering)" and Monica as a shorthand typist.

Lena, who never married, later settled in Canada (as did Monica).

Lucy died at the age of 13 months from "Laryngismus and Broncho-Pneumonia".
F xii Monica Esther M. RYAN was born on 4 Apr 1914. She died on 20 Jun 1997.

Anthony Edward (Edward) SMYTHE was born in 1898 in Ireland. He died in 1945 in Cazenovia, New York. Anthony married Catherine (Kathleen) RYAN on 19 Apr 1924 in Syracuse, New York.

Edward emigrated to the United States in 1914. He was working as a night watchman at a die press company at the time of the 1930 census, and 10 years later he was a school janitor.

Catherine (Kathleen) RYAN [Parents] was born in 1896 in Co. Tipperary. She died in 1992 in Syracuse, New York. Catherine married Anthony Edward (Edward) SMYTHE on 19 Apr 1924 in Syracuse, New York.

Kathleen emigrated to the United States in 1919. At the time of the 1930 and 1940 censuses she and her husband, Edward, and their family were living in Cazenovia, New York. Living with them in 1940 were a niece and nephew, Kathleen Golden who was 18 years of age and 14-year-old Charles Golden, both born in New York.

They had the following children.

Harry Douglas LITTLE [Parents] was born on 14 Apr 1907 in Cheshire. He died on 30 Aug 1959 in Royal Air Force Hospital, Ely, Cambridgeshire. He was buried in Newmarket, Suffolk. Harry married Johanna Mary (Violet, Vi) RYAN about 1932.

Harry was a member of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) His address at the time of his death was 164 Windsor Road, Newmarket, Suffolk.

Johanna Mary (Violet, Vi) RYAN [Parents] was born on 16 Apr 1902 in 127 George's St., Cork. She died in 1963 in Cambridge. She was buried in Newmarket, Suffolk. Johanna married Harry Douglas LITTLE about 1932.

Johanna was called Violet or Vi by some family members. According to family sources Johanna was born in 1904. However, the 1939 Register, available on the Findmypast website, gives her date of birth as 16 April 1902 which, interestingly, is the same date of birth as a Matthew Ryan, located on the Irish Genealogy website, who was born in Cork to a mother whose maiden name was Doody. As we know that Johanna's brother Matthew Joseph listed here who was born on 23 Feb 1895 survived to adulthood it looks like a transcription error occurred (giving Johanna's father's name rather than Johanna). I am therefore assuming that Johanna was actually born on 16 April 1902.

In the 1939 Register Johanna is listed with her parents at 71 Burnham Road, St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Her husband, Harry, who was a member of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) is not listed, presumably owing to war duties. There are two lines in the Register after Johanna's entry which are blacked out and I am assuming these lines relate to two of Johanna's children. They are lacked out because no details of people who may still be living are available to the public by Findmypast.

By 1953 Johanna, Harry and their family were living at No. 20 P.T.C., R.A.F. Cranage, Middlewich, Cheshire. Johanna lived in Newmarket, Suffolk in the later years of her life.

Note: The Birth Register mistakenly shows the name Matthew instead of Johanna but there is a note written alongside the entry explaining that there is an error.

They had the following children.

Cecil was a commercial traveller for a wallboard manufacturing company (according to the 1939 Register). He served with the R.A.F. (Royal Air Force) during World War II and spent time as a prisoner of war after his plane came down in Germany.

In 1953 Cecil changed his surname to Ryan (his wife's surname) by deed poll.

Matthew Joseph RYAN [Parents] was born on 23 Feb 1895 in Co. Tipperary. He died in 1969 in Harrow, London. Matthew married Sarah MCKEOWN on 12 Dec 1919 in Belfast.

The 1911 census tells us that 16-year-old Matthew was living with his family in Balfast and working as a paper machinist. He emigrated to the United States in August 1918 and we know from his World War I Draft Registration Card that he was living and working in New Haven, Connecticut in September 1918. The Registration Card also tells us that he had had the tops of four fingers amputated on his left hand. Matthew appears to have moved back to Ireland shortly afterwards as he was married in Belfast in 1919 giving his address as 10 Gamble St., Belfast (his family lived at 14 Gamble St.).

Matthew later settled in England and we know from the 1939 Register that he and his wife and family were living at the time at 48 Ferdinand Street, St. Pancras, London.

Sarah MCKEOWN [Parents] was born on 28 Feb 1895. Sarah married Matthew Joseph RYAN on 12 Dec 1919 in Belfast.

Marriage Notes:

Sarah's occupation on the marriage certificate is shop assistant while Matthew's is sailor.
