According to the 1901 census, 24-year-old Katie was a shopkeeper. After her marriage she and her husband, Robert Keating, ran a shop and creamery, Keatings Creameries, in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. On 19 April 1923, during the Irish Civil War, cream from Keatings Creameries was being transported by rail to Newcastle West, Co. Limerick when the train was destroyed by armed men. Thanks to the Damage to Property (Compensation) Act of 1923 Katie received £400 sometime around 1925 in compensation for her losses. Shortly thereafter, between 1925 and 1926, Katie, Maurice and all their children emigrated to Chicago. Katie died, aged 74, just one month after the death of her son David.
