James CALLEARY [Parents] was born on 2 May 1867 in Ballina, Co. Mayo. He died in 1945 in Ballina, Co. Mayo. James married Eleanor (Ellen) KELLY on 22 Aug 1890 in Kilmoremoy, Ballina, Co. Mayo.

James was a grocer in Ballina. At the time of the 1901 census he and his family were living at 6 Hill St., Ballina, just a couple of doors away from James's parents, Michael and Eliza, who lived at 2 Hill St. By 1911 James and his family had moved into no. 2 while Michael and Eliza were living at no. 14 with their daughter Elizabeth.

Eleanor (Ellen) KELLY [Parents] was born about 1870 in Ardvalley, Ballina, Co. Mayo. She died in 1949 in Ballina, Co. Mayo. Eleanor married James CALLEARY on 22 Aug 1890 in Kilmoremoy, Ballina, Co. Mayo.

According to the 1911 census Ellen and James had 10 children born alive, eight of whom were still alive at the time of the census. One of the two children who died was Ambrose who was born and died in 1903. We do not know the name of the second child who died.

The 1901 census tells us that Michael was a tailor living at 2 Hill St., Ballina. His surname and that of his wife, Eliza, is written as "Callary" on the census return.

Elizabeth (Eliza) ORMSBY was born about 1841 in Co. Mayo. She died in 1921 in Ballina, Co. Mayo. Elizabeth married Michael COLLEARY about 1866 in probably Co. Mayo.

Thomas GORDON [Parents] was born about 17 Apr 1859 in probably Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 17 Apr 1859 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died in Apr 1918 in Withington, Manchester. Thomas married Mary BROWN in 1888 in Burnage Congregational Chapel, Manchester.

Thomas emigrated to England and settled in Ladybarn, Withington, Lancashire. He lived all his married life at 6 Edward St. (since renamed Beverly Road) in Ladybarn. The 1901 census tells us that was a "Farm Labourer (yard)" but this was crossed out and replaced with what looks like "Ag Horse". By the time of the 1911 census he was a carter for Manchester Corporation. From time to time, Thomas, who grew up on a farm, kept goats, turkeys and other poultry in the small back yard of 6 Edward St.

Thomas died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. He left an estate worth £241 1s to his wife, Mary. Thomas's grandson Frederick Beesley, who never knew Thomas as he had died when Frederick was only about a year old, wrote of him many years later "The impression I have of him from other relatives is that he was a quiet, hard-working man with an equable temperament".

Mary BROWN [Parents] was born on 15 Sep 1866 in Ladybarn, Withington, Manchester. She died in 1951 in Manchester. She was buried in Southern Cemetery, Manchester. Mary married Thomas GORDON in 1888 in Burnage Congregational Chapel, Manchester.

It appears that Mary met her future husband, Thomas, through her parents with whom Thomas was boarding. The 1881 census tells us that Thomas was lodging with William and Sarah Brown at the time, although Mary herself is not listed. Also listed among the Browns' four lodgers is a Patrick Gordon, born in Ireland and possibly Thomas's brother Patrick, although Thomas also had a first cousin of a similar age named Patrick.

We know that Mary was living at 6 Edward St. (since renamed Beverly Road), Ladybarn, Manchester at the time of the 1939 Register (taken on 29 September 1939). Living with her at the time were her children Annie, Mary and John, along with her grandson Frederick Beesley.  

Mary is buried in grave no. H1168 in the Catholic section of Southern Cemetery.

Annie GORDON was born on 17 May 1890 in Ladybarn, Withington, Manchester.

Annie entered the convent but left after the death of her sister Kate and returned to the family home in Ladybarn. She was very attached to her father's side of the family and spent many holidays at the old Gordon family home in Kilgarriff, Co. Roscommon.

Annie was working as a restaurant cook at the time of the 1939 Register.

Mary lived with her husband, Eric, and her sister Annie in the Gordon family home at 6 Edward St., Ladybarn.

James was Sarah's twin. He and his wife, Gladys, had no children.

Gladys M. KNIGHT died. Gladys married James GORDON in 1919 in Chorlton registration district, Lancashire.
