Celia Eliza HOYLE was born in 1878 in Plymouth, Devon.
No evidence has been found to suggest that Celia ever lived in New Zealand, indicating that she may have died as a child back in England. However, no English death record could be located for Celia.
Celia is not listed with her family in the 1891 census of England. However, a Celia E. Hoyle of the right age is listed in the 1891 census as a member of the household of an Annie Philp in Devonport. Annie was a widow aged 53, and listed with her is 29-year old Laura Hicks who is described, strangely, as the wife of the head of the household, i.e., Annie. Perhaps Laura was the wife of the owner of the house who happened to be away from home on the night of the census? On the census return Celia is listed as Annie's daughter, which could be true, but given the Devonport location and Celia's age, it could be that Celia, daughter of James Hoyle and Mary Wreford, was being raised by another family in Devonport and never went to New Zealand with the rest of her family. |
