Selected Families and Individuals

B. HARGADEN died. B. HARGADEN married Ellen (Nellie) O'SULLIVAN.

Nellie and her husband lived in the Sullivan family home at Marina Terrace in Cork. They had no children.

Ellen (Nellie) O'SULLIVAN [Parents] was born on 24 Feb 1903 in Newline, Charleville, Co. Cork. She died after 20 Apr 1982 in probably Cork. Ellen married B. HARGADEN.

Nellie worked in Roches Stores in Cork. After the death of her sister Sr. Dympna in 1981, Nellie was the only sibling left.

Michael Joseph O'SULLIVAN [Parents] was born on 25 Jul 1900 in probably Newline, Charleville, Co. Cork. He died on 11 May 1953 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He was buried on 13 May 1953 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greenwich, Connecticut. Michael married Marie ROEDELBRONN after Aug 1934.

Michael emigrated to the United States as a young man, settling in Greenwich, Connecticut at the age of about 25. It is thought that he and his wife, Marie, had no children.

No trace of Michael was found in the 1930 census but there is a record of his return by ship to the United States from Ireland in June 1934. He was single at the time and was working as a butler. August 1938 sees Michael travelling by ship from Bremen, Germany to New York. He was single at the time. Could he have been visiting the family of his future wife, Marie, who was German? Marie, however, is not listed with him on the ship manifest. Michael's occupation on the manifest is 'Caterer Butler'.

Michael and Marie are both listed in the census of 1940. They were living at the time at Benedict Place in Greenwich and Michael was working as a "Butler Supt." in (what looks like) "Club in Private Home". Michael later worked as a clerk for a stationery company.

According to his death certificate Michael died in Greenwich Hospital from cirrhosis of the liver due to loss of appetite and malnutrition resulting from a gastrectomy he had undergone in 1950.

Marie ROEDELBRONN was born on 8 Aug 1896 in Germany. She died on 16 Dec 1979 in Greenwich, Connecticut. Marie married Michael Joseph O'SULLIVAN after Aug 1934.

Michael's death certificate gives Marie's surname as Roedelbrann. However, purely based on a quick search on the internet, it would appear that the name Roedelbrann is almost non-existent but that the almost identical name Roedelbrann is much more widely found. I have therefore added the Roedelbronn name as an alternative surname to Roedelbrann in case Roedelbronn researchers identify Marie as a member of their family.

Note that Marie's father's surname as provided on Ancestry.com's transcription of Marie's death record in the Connecticut Death Index (1949-2001) is "Oedelbronn", a name that does not appear to exist.

I am told by Diane Molnar, a great-granddaughter of a Gustav Roedelbronn who emigrated from Germany in 1895, that Roedelbronn is a very unusual name in the U.S., although there are many Rodels and Roeds, which could possibly be the result of name-shortening. Diane, whose Roedelbronn family settled in New Jersey, is not aware of any Connecticut connection to her family. She does know of a Roedelbronn family (possibly related to her) who settled in Wisconsin; and in the 1880 census of the United States she found information on two Roedelbronn households (unrelated, as far as she knows) who had settled in Massachusetts. Their details are as follows:

Name: Charles Roedelbronn
Home in 1880: Webster, Worcester, Massachusetts
Age: 33
Estimated birth year: abt 1847
Birthplace: Prussia
Spouse's name: Susan M. (born Connecticut)
Father's birthplace: Hesse Darmstadt
Mother's birthplace: Hesse Darmstadt
Occupation: Shoe factory worker
Marital Status: Married

Name: Frank Roedelbronn
Home in 1880: Webster, Worcester, Massachusetts
Age: 69
Estimated birth year: abt 1811
Birthplace: Hesse, Germany
Spouse's name: Christine (aged 69)
Father's birthplace: Hesse, Germany
Mother's birthplace: Hesse, Germany
Occupation: Woollen factory worker

It is possible that Charles was Frank's son.
