Nicholas TREACY (caution: not verified) [Parents] was born about 1805 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. He died 25 Mar 1848 and was buried in Kilfeacle, Co. Tipperary. Nicholas married Margaret DARMODY on 26 Feb 1838.

Nicholas was definitely related to John, but it's pure speculation that he was John's brother. For the following reason it's a possibility they were brothers:

It's known that John's grandchildren had a cousin of a similar age (though not a first cousin) called Nicholas Treacy. Nicholas (John's brother-presumed) had a grandson called Nicholas, so it's possible that Nicholas, the grandchild, was a second cousin of John's grandchildren. It's therefore possible that Nicholas and John were brothers.

There's only one Nicholas Treacy listed in Griffith's Valuation (1851) for Soloheadbeg. It's probable this is our Nicholas.

Margaret DARMODY [Parents] was born 14 Jul 1820 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. She died probably between 1901 and 1911. Margaret married Nicholas TREACY (caution: not verified) on 26 Feb 1838.

Witnesses to the marriage of Nicholas and Margaret were John Ryan and Patrick Darmody.

Margaret is listed in the 1901 census but not in the 1911 census so presumably she died between 1901 and 1911.

They had the following children:

  F i
Catherine TREACY was born about 11 Jul 1840 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary and was christened 11 Jul 1840 in Solohead, Co. Tipperary.

Sponsors at Catherine's christening were Michael Treacy and Margaret Darmody.
M ii Thomas TREACY was born about 6 Mar 1842 and died 16 Feb 1914.
  F iii
Mary TREACY was born about 12 Jul 1844 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary and was christened 12 Jul 1844 in Solohead, Co. Tipperary.

Sponsors at Mary's christening were Timothy Treacy and Anne Treacy.
  F iv
Johanna TREACY was born about 1848 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. She died possibly 7 Sep 1934 in probably Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary and was buried in Kilfeacle, Co. Tipperary.

Johanna never married. It's probable she lived with her brother, Thomas, and his family in Soloheadbeg because she's listed (as single) in both the 1901 and 1911 census returns for his household. In the 1901 return, her age is given as 50 (born c.1850), but in 1911, her age is given as 65 (born c. 1845). There's further confusion regarding Johanna's age because the Johanna Treacy buried in the Treacy family plot in Kilfeacle, which is likely to be our Johanna above, died in 1934 aged 73 (born c. 1861).  Therefore, because Johann'a father died in March 1848, we will assume that she was actually born about 1848. Unfortunately no baptismal record has been located for her.

James GORDON was born about 1830. He married Maria COUGHLIN.

James was a publican and shopkeeper in the town of Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. It's thought he may have inherited the business from his father who may have been named Jack. It's also believed this Gordon family had a connection with Strokestown, Co. Roscommon and that they were NOT related to the Gordon family of Kilgarriff, Co. Roscommon.

Maria COUGHLIN [Parents] was born about 1840. She married James GORDON.

They had the following children:

  F i
Maria Theresa GORDON was born 7 Mar 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was christened 10 Mar 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
  M ii
Thomas Andrew GORDON was born 25 Nov 1871 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was christened 29 Nov 1871 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
  F iii
Jane GORDON was born about 27 Dec 1874 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was christened 27 Dec 1874 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Jane's baptism were Thomas Greevy and Mary Anne Bligh.
  M iv
James GORDON was born about 16 Sep 1877 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was christened 16 Sep 1877 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at James' baptism were Pat Horan and Winnie Gordon.
  F v
Margaret Kate GORDON was born about 7 Nov 1880 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was christened 7 Nov 1880 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died 7 Mar 1887 in Ballymote, Co. Sligo.

Sponsors at Margaret Kate's baptism were Tom Delaney and Kate Coughlin.

Margaret died from croup at the age of six at the home of her grandfather, Bartholemew Coughlan, in Ballymote.
M vi John P. (Jack) GORDON was born about 3 Jun 1883 and died 24 Aug 1934.

Bartholemew COUGHLIN was born in possibly Ballymote, Co. Sligo.

He had the following children:

F i Maria COUGHLIN was born about 1840.

John P. (Jack) GORDON [Parents] was born about 3 Jun 1883 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was christened 3 Jun 1883 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He died 24 Aug 1934 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. John married Anne (Annie) MCDONNELL about 1908.

The only sponsor listed at Jack's baptism was Thomas Gordon. Jack took over the running of the shop from his father. The shop was big and the family was well-off. The business was eventually sold in 1955.

Note: It's believed that Jack's Gordon ancestors may have moved to Ballaghaderreen from Strokestown, also in Co. Roscommon, and that they were NOT related to another family being researched, the Gordons of Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

Anne (Annie) MCDONNELL [Parents] "Annie" was born 1883 in probably Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. She died 10 May 1964 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. Annie married John P. (Jack) GORDON about 1908.

It's said that Annie and Jack were first cousins. However this doesn't tie in with other information I've been given about the family: Jack's parents' surnames were Gordon and Coughlin and Annie's parents' surnames were McDonnell and Fitzgerald; therefore they couldn't have been first cousins. Perhaps they were second cousins.

Following the deaths of her children, Annie started helping financially in the education of young men who wished to become priests.

They had the following children:

  F i
Kathleen GORDON was born 1909. She died 1914 and was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
  M ii
John P. (Jay) GORDON "Jay" was born 1910. He died 8 Nov 1933 in Australia.

Jay emigrated to England and later to Australia where he died.
  M iii
James (Jim) GORDON "Jim" was born 1911. He died 1917 and was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
  M iv
Michael GORDON was born 1913. He died 1917.
  F v
Ethna or Eithne GORDON was born 1918 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died 1918 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
  F vi
Mary GORDON was born 1920 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died 1925.
  F vii
Angela GORDON was born 1923 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died 1924 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
  F viii
Denise Bride GORDON was born 1924 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died 9 Mar 1943 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon and was buried 11 Mar 1943 in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Denise, who was only 18 years of age when she died, was the last surviving child of Jack and Annie. Of their eight children, six died before they reached the age of seven; Jay, who lived the longest, died at the age of 23.

Michael Alexander MCDONNELL [Parents] was born about 1852 in Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. He died 12 Jun 1924. Michael married 'unknown' FITZGERALD.

Michael lived at The Square in Charlestown, Co. Roscommon. According to the 1901 census he was a "general merchant".

'unknown' FITZGERALD died before 1902. She married Michael Alexander MCDONNELL.

They had the following children:

  F i
Ellie MCDONNELL was born about 1877. She died 25 Jan 1937 in Dublin and was buried in Carracastle Cemetery, Co. Mayo.
  M ii
James (Jimmy) MCDONNELL was born about 1878.
F iii Anne (Annie) MCDONNELL was born 1883 and died 10 May 1964.
  F iv
Bride (Bea) MCDONNELL "Bea" was born about 1883.

It's believed Bea became a nun.

Dominick BLIGH [Parents] was born 1833 in probably Castlerea, Co . Roscommon and was christened 8 Mar 1833 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. He died 29 Apr 1920. Dominick married Anne? GORDON (Caution: name, husband and children not verified) on 17 Feb 1876 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Anne? GORDON (Caution: name, husband and children not verified) [Parents] was born about 1861 in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She died possibly 12 Feb 1937 in possibly Cloonkeen, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. Anne? married Dominick BLIGH on 17 Feb 1876 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

It's pure speculation that this daughter of Michael and Anne was named Anne and that she married Dominick Bligh. From family notes it's known that Michael and Anne had three sons and four daughters. The names of the three sons and three of the daughters have been verified, but the name of the fourth daughter isn't certain. The reason it's thought it might be Anne is because of correspondence (via leitrim-roscommmon.com) with Mick Pythian, a great-grandson of Dominick Bligh who was a farmer from Castlerea and who, in 1876, married an Anne Gordon from Aughalustia whose father's name was Michael.

Our Michael Gordon farmed in Aughalustia, and according to Cormac Gordon (son of Cormac Gordon and Mary Morahan), our Gordons were distantly related to a Bligh family from Castlerea who were "egglers" (they bought eggs from farmers' wives and sold them on), but he wasn't sure of the exact relationship. It's quite possible that these Blighs who were egglers were part of the Bligh family into which Mick Phythian's great-grandmother married. And it's possible, given the Aughalustia connection, and the fact that Mick's Anne Gordon had a father named Michael and was born about 1861 (this from the 1901 census), which fits in with the dates of birth of our Michael's children, that Anne might well be the "fourth" daughter of our Michael Gordon and Anne Finn.

They had the following children:

M i James Joseph BLIGH was born 13 Feb 1877 and died 8 Feb 1948.
  F ii
Mary Anne BLIGH was born 1878 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon and was christened 27 Jan 1878 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. She died 29 Mar 1964.

  F iii
Margaret BLIGH was born 1879 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon and was christened 11 Jan 1879 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon.

Margaret may have died as a child because another Margaret was born in 1886.
