Selected Families and Individuals

Alexander (Alex) MCDONNELL [Parents] was born about 1860 in Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. He died on 14 Jun 1923 in 4 Dorset Square, Marylebone, London. Alexander married Mary FITZGERALD about 1891.

Alex was a surgeon and lived for many years at 39 Stamford Hill, Middlesex. He was well-known among the Irish community of Stamford Hill.

Mary FITZGERALD [Parents] was born on 25 Mar 1867 in Main St., Charlestown, Co. Mayo. She died after 29 Sep 1939 in London. Mary married Alexander (Alex) MCDONNELL about 1891.

Mary may have been a sister of 'unknown' Fitzgerald, wife of Mary's brother-in-law Michael McDonnell. This is based on an obituary of Mary's father, James Fitzgerald of Charlestown, Co. Mayo, which includes in its list of mourners "Dr. McDonald of London and Michael McDonald [sic] (sons-in-law)". As McDonald and McDonnell are frequently used interchangeably, I think it probable that Michael McDonald is actually Michael McDonnell, Mary's brother-in-law.

According to the 1939 Register Mary was living with her son Gerald at 1 St Stephen Gardens, St. Margarets, Twickenham, London. She is described in the Register as "incapacitated".

They had the following children.

M i Alexander (Alex) Joseph Vincent MCDONNELL was born in 1891. He died.
  M ii
James MCDONNELL was born in 1892 in Hackney, London.

James became a doctor.

The 1939 Register has a James McDonnell, a medical practitoner born on 11 June 1892 and living at 24 Park Square East, St. Pancras, London. I think it likely this is our James. Listed with James at the same address is a Kathleen McDonnell, a masseuse born on 22 December 1901. Did our James have a sister named Kathleen? We do know that our James had nine siblings, two of whose names we do not have.
  F iii
Bridget (Bride) Christine MCDONNELL was born on 1 Jun 1893 in Hackney, London.

Bride was single and living with her brother Gerald in Twickenham in 1939.
  M iv
Stanislaus MCDONNELL was born in 1894 in Hackney, London. He died in possibly 1918 in possibly Edmonton, London.
M v Martin MCDONNELL was born in 1896.
  vi

  M vii
Gerald Wolf L. MCDONNELL was born on 22 Jan 1898 in Hackney, London.

Gerald was a doctor. The 1939 Register tells us he was single at the time and living at 1 St. Stephen Gardens, St. Margarets, Twickenham, London. Living with him were his widowed mother, Mary, and his sisters Bride and Maria. Also listed as a member of the household was a Nellie (or perhaps Lillie?) O'Callaghan, a widow born on 28 October(?) 1869 and described as "incapacitated". Could Nellie have been an aunt of Gerald's?
  F viii
Mary (Maria) Jeanette MCDONNELL was born on 27 Aug 1899 in Hackney, London.

Maria was single and living with her brother Gerald in Twickenham, London in 1939.
  F ix
Ellen (Nellie) MCDONNELL was born in 1901 in Hackney, London.

One of Alex and Mary's daughters became a nun. Was this Nellie?
  x
'unknown' MCDONNELL was born in Hackney, London. 'unknown' died.

John IRWIN was born about 1840. He died in between 30 March 1901 and 2 April 1911 in probably Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. John married Bridget GORDON on 27 Apr 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Eliza Flannery witnessed the marriage of John and Bridget.

Bridget GORDON [Parents] was born about 1849 in Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She died about 1906 in probably Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. She was buried in Urlaur (or Orlar) Abbey, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. Bridget married John IRWIN on 27 Apr 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

It is known that Bridget died at the age of 56. Her grave, in Urlaur Abbey, is unmarked.

They had the following children.

Cormac Henry IRWIN was born on 17 Oct 1884 in Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. He died in 1931 in Prescot, Lancashire.

Cormac travelled to the United States in 1906, presumably intending to settle there. The ship manifest indicates that he was planning to travel on to Cleveland, Ohio where his sister Mary was living. Cormac later settled in England.

Timothy HIGGINS was born about 1835. Timothy married Ellen MORRIS on 16 Feb 1871 in Fairymount Church.

It is possible that Timothy was a brother of Patrick Higgins who married Mary Frain on 7 February 1866 in Loughglynn. Mary was a daughter of Thomas Frain from Barnacawley in Fairymount and Mary Coffey. Patrick Higgins and Mary Frain had seven children - Thomas, Maria, John, Patrick, Eliza, Julia and Catherine - born between 1866 and 1879, six in Cloonfinglas in Fairymount and one in Stonepark, also in Fairymount. This information comes from Michael Frain, a great-grandson of Thomas Frain and Mary Coffey. Michael would be very grateful for any additional information on his Frain family. He can be contacted at michaelfrain@talktalk.net

Michael CONCANNON died.

He had the following children.

F i Mary CONCANNON was born about 1850. She died after 2 Apr 1911.

James HELBERT died. James married Margaret MORRIS on 31 Jan 1878 in Fairymount Church.

Helbert is an unusual name. There are entries in Griffith's Valuation for Helberts, mostly in Kilteevin (Castlerea) but there are no returns for Helbert in the 1901 census. By the time of the 1911 census, however, there are at least three Helbert families living in Co. Roscommon. Census details of one of these families, which appears to be that of James above, follow:

James (70), widower
Michael (28), son
Catherine (30), daughter-in-law
Michael (1), grandson
Thomas (3 months), grandson
Michael and Catherine had been married for three years and had two children born alive, both of whom were alive at the time of the census.

Margaret MORRIS [Parents] was born about 23 Sep 1858. She was christened on 23 Sep 1858 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. She died. Margaret married James HELBERT on 31 Jan 1878 in Fairymount Church.

They had the following children.

  F i
Mary HELBERT was born about 1 Jun 1879. She was christened on 1 Jun 1879 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.
  M ii

  M iii

It is believed that Michael died in infancy.
  M iv
James HELBERT was born about 22 Apr 1882. He was christened on 22 Apr 1882 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.
  M v
Michael HELBERT was born about 5 Oct 1883. He was christened on 5 Oct 1883 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

It is likely that Michael married and had a family as I believe I may have located a 1911 census record for him. Please see the notes for his father, James, above for details.

However, Ellis Island records show the arrival in New York on 15 February 1908 of a Michael Helbert from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. He was 22 and was joining a cousin, John Gordon, in Washington, D.C. The name of his nearest relative in Ireland is given as Edward Morris, an uncle, of Clerragh, Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. It is possible that this Michael is or Michael above, although our Michael's mother, as far as we know, did not have a brother named Edward. If the Michael Helbert who emigrated is indeed our Michael, then he may have returned to the farm in Clerragh a couple of years later (see notes on his father, James, above for more information). And if if was our Michael who emigrated, then it is possible that his cousin, John Gordon, who is mentioned on the Ellis Island record was his first cousin once removed who was the son of Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley.
  F vi

According to the 1901 census, Michael was a farmer in the townland of Grange More in the parish of Boyle.

Bridget KELLY [Parents] was born about 1841 in probably Cloonarragh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in probably Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Bridget married Michael GORDON on 30 Nov 1865 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

They had the following children.

  M i
Martin GORDON was born on 6 Nov 1866 in Ballinameen, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 9 Nov 1866 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
  M ii
Charles GORDON was born about 2 Mar 1868 in Ballinameen, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 2 Mar 1868 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

I have discovered that Charles above, i.e., the Charles Gordon who was christened on 2 March 1864, was not a child of Michael Gordon and Bridget Kelly. According to the Ancestry website, he was in fact a child of a Michael Gordon who married a Mary Beirne. I will leave his name listed here for now as I have been told that Michael and Bridget had a son named Charles.
  F iii
Maria GORDON was born about 6 Aug 1869 in Ballinameen, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 6 Aug 1869 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

According to the 1901 census Charles's family lived in the townland of Coolatinny in the parish of Kiltullagh (Kiltullagh is the old name for Ballinlough).

Charles died of tuberculosis aged only 48.

Mary CONCANNON [Parents] was born about 1850 in probably Coolatinny, Kiltullagh, Co. Roscommon. She died after 2 Apr 1911. Mary married Charles GORDON on 21 Feb 1870 in Granlahan Church.

They had the following children.

M i Thomas GORDON was born on 10 Dec 1870.
  F ii
Bridget GORDON was born on 2 Mar 1872 in Frenchpark, Co . Roscommon.
  M iii
Patrick GORDON was born on 12 Mar 1874 in Frenchpark, Co . Roscommon.

  M v
William GORDON was born about 19 May 1878. He was christened on 19 May 1878 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

It is a possibility that William was a great-grandfather of Anne Gleeson-Khan who lives in the UK. Anne's great-grandfather was a William Gordon, born about 1878 in Coolatinny, Co. Roscommon. Our William, above, was born in 1878 and his wife, Mary Concannon, was born in Coolatinny, which is why we think there may be a connection. Anne's great-grandfather emigrated to England where, in 1912, he married Mary Morris in Bolton, Lancashire. They had four children.

  M vi
Bernard GORDON was born about 8 Dec 1879. He was christened on 8 Dec 1879 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.
  F vii
'unknown' GORDON (female) was born on 26 Jan 1886.

This daughter of Charles and Mary isn't listed in the 1901 census return for the household.
M viii John Charles GORDON was born about 20 Feb 1887. He died after 1941.

Michael KELLY died. Michael married Mary COLL.

M ii Thomas C. GORDON was born on 24 Mar 1921. He died in 1984.
M iii Edward F. GORDON was born in 1926. He died in 2007.

William O'HARA [Parents] was born about 1797 in Co. Sligo, or Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died on 18 May 1872 in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. William married Jane BOYDE about 1820.

William farmed in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Jane BOYDE was born about 1798 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died on 7 Dec 1879 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Jane married William O'HARA about 1820.

Jane's family probably descended from Scottish settlers.

Jane and William may have had another son, named Michael, as the New South Wales Assited Immigrant Passenger Lists show that a Michael O'Hara, aged 28 and from Cootehall, Co. Roscommon, arrived aboard the Hornet in New South Wales, Australia on 25 January 1865. Michael was therefore born about 1836 which fits in with the births of the children of Jane and William. Or perhaps Michael was a son of William's brother Roger and his wife Maria Murray who also had children around the same time that Michael was born.

They had the following children.

  M i Laurence O'HARA was born in 1821. He died on 7 Apr 1904.
