Alex was a doctor and lived in the Stamford Hill area of London. He was well-known among the Irish community there.

John IRWIN was born about 1840. He married Bridget GORDON on 27 Apr 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Bridget GORDON [Parents] was born about 1849 in Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She died about 1906 and was buried in Urlaur (or Orlar) Abbey, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. Bridget married John IRWIN on 27 Apr 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

It's known Bridget died at the age of 56. Her grave, in Urlaur Abbey, is unmarked.

Cormac lived in England.

Timothy HIGGINS was born about 1835. He married Ellen MORRIS on 16 Feb 1871 in Fairymount Church.

It's possible Timothy was a brother of Patrick Higgins who married Mary Frain on 7 February 1866 in Loughglynn. Mary was a daughter of Thomas Frain from Barnacawley in Fairymount and Mary Coffey. Patrick Higgins and Mary Frain had seven children - Thomas, Maria, John, Patrick, Eliza, Julia and Catherine - born between 1866 and 1879, six in Cloonfinglas in Fairymount and one in Stonepark, also in Fairymount. This information comes from Michael Frain, a great-grandson of Thomas Frain and Mary Coffey. Michael would be very grateful for any additional information on his Frain family. Helbert is an unusual name. There are entries in Griffiths Valuation for Helberts, mostly in Kilteevin (Castlerea) but there are no returns for Helbert in the 1901 census. By the time of the 1911 census, however, there are at least three Helbert families living in Co. Roscommon. Census details of one of these families, which appears to be that of James above, follow:

Michael and Catherine had been married for three years and had two children born alive, both of whom were alive at the time of the census.

Margaret MORRIS [Parents] was born about 23 Sep 1858 and was christened 23 Sep 1858 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. She married James HELBERT on 31 Jan 1878 in Fairymount Church.

It's likely Michael married and had a family as I believe I may have located a 1911 census record for him. Please see the notes for his father, James, above for details.

However Ellis Island records show the arrival in New York on 15 February 1908 of a Michael Helbert from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. He was 22 and was joining a cousin, John Gordon, in Washington, D.C. The name of his nearest relative in Ireland is given as Edward Morris, an uncle, of Clerragh, Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. It's possible this Michael is or Michael above, although our Michael's mother, as far as we know, didn't have a brother named Edward. If the Michael Helbert who emigrated is indeed our Michael, then he may have returned to the farm in Clerragh a couple of years later (see notes on his father, James, above for more information). And if if was our Michael who emigrated, then it's possible his cousin, John Gordon, who is mentioned on the Ellis Island record was his first cousin once removed who was the son of Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley.

Michael GORDON (not verified) [Parents] was born about 5 Jul 1838 and was christened 5 Jul 1838 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died in probably Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Michael married Bridget KELLY on 30 Nov 1865 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

According to the 1901 census, Michael was a farmer in the townland of Grange More in the parish of Boyle.

Bridget KELLY [Parents] was born about 1841 in probably Cloonarragh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in probably Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Bridget married Michael GORDON (not verified) on 30 Nov 1865 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

Charles GORDON (not verified) [Parents] was born in probably Clerragh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died possibly before 1902. Charles married Mary CONCANNON on 21 Feb 1870 in Granlahan Church.

Charles isn't included as part of the household in the 1901 census. His wife, Mary, is listed as the head of household, so it's being assumed that Charles had died before then.

According to the 1901 census Charles's family lived in the townland of Coolatinny in the parish of Kiltullagh (Kiltullagh is the old name for Ballinlough).

Mary CONCANNON [Parents] was born about 1850 in probably Coolatinny, Kiltullagh, Co. Roscommon. She married Charles GORDON (not verified) on 21 Feb 1870 in Granlahan Church.

It's a possibility that William was a great-grandfather of Anne Gleeson-Khan who lives in the UK. Anne's great-grandfather was a William Gordon, born about 1878 in Coolatinny, Co. Roscommon. Our William, above, was born in 1878 and his wife, Mary Concannon, was born in Coolatinny, which is why we think there may be a connection. Anne's great-grandfather emigrated to England where, in 1912, he married Mary Morris in Bolton, Lancashire. They had four children.

John Charles GORDON [Parents] was born about 20 Feb 1887 and was christened 20 Feb 1887 in Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon. He died in probably Massachusetts. John married Mary O'MALLEY in Walden, Massachusetts.

John Charles emigrated to Boston as a young man.

Mary O'MALLEY was born 2 Sep 1890 in Feenune, Westport, Co. Mayo. She married John Charles GORDON in Walden, Massachusetts.

William O'HARA [Parents] was born about 1797 in Co. Sligo, or Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died 18 May 1872 in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. William married Jane BOYDE about 1820.

William farmed in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Jane BOYDE was born about 1798 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died 7 Dec 1879 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Jane married William O'HARA about 1820.

Jane's family probably descended from Scottish settlers.

Jane and William may have had another son, named Michael, as the New South Wales Assited Immigrant Passenger Lists show that a Michael O'Hara, aged 28 and from Cootehall, Co. Roscommon, arrived aboard the Hornet in New South Wales, Australia on 25 January 1865. Michael was therefore born about 1836 which fits in with the births of the children of Jane and William. Or perhaps Michael was a son of William's brother Roger and his wife Maria Murray who also had children around the same time that Michael was born.

Patrick O'HARA was born in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was buried in possibly Ardcarne Cemetery, Co. Roscommon.

Patrick became a priest and served in Four Mile House parish in Co. Roscommon. There's a memorial to him in Ardcarne cemetery erected by his niece and housekeeper, Anne Mary O'Hara.
