John (The Major) HANRAHAN [Parents] was born about 25 Jan 1856 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 27 Jan 1856. He died after 2 Apr 1911 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John married Elizabeth BUCKLEY on 6 Feb 1883 in Listowel registration district, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at John's baptism were Denis Shanahan and Margaret Connor.

John, who was known locally as 'The Major' (even though he had never served in the army) was the only member of his family to remain in Kerry.

Elizabeth BUCKLEY [Parents] was born about 1860. She died before 2 Apr 1911. Elizabeth married John (The Major) HANRAHAN on 6 Feb 1883 in Listowel registration district, Co. Kerry.

Marriage Notes:

John and Elizabeth's marriage record was located on the Irish Genealogy webssite, www.irishgenealogy.ie. However it is dated 6 February 1883 and thir eldest child was apparently born in 1883. It appears the marriage date may have been transcribed incorrectly on the Irish Genealogy website.

They had the following children.

M i John (Jack) Joseph HANRAHAN was born on 4 Sep 1881. He died on 2 Apr 1965.
  M ii
Michael (Mickey) HANRAHAN was born about 18 Oct 1883 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 20 Oct 1883 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 11 Dec 1912 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Mickey was only 29 years of age when he died of "acute peritonitis from burst abscess".

John was from Coolderry, Co. Roscommon.

Mary GALVIN [Parents] died. Mary married John FINERTY on 8 Jun 1874 in Athleague, Co. Roscommon.

Patrick O'HARA [Parents] was born in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Patrick married Margaret MEEHAN on 2 Feb 1852 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

It is thought that Patrick farmed in the townland of Cleigna (also spelled Clegna) in Cootehall.

Margaret MEEHAN was born about 1834. Margaret married Patrick O'HARA on 2 Feb 1852 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Could Margaret have been related to Ellen Meehan who married Laurence O'Hara, uncle of Margaret's husband, Patrick?

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Patrick Meehan and Roger O'Hara.

They had the following children.

  M i
John O'HARA was born about 5 Jun 1853. He was christened on 5 Jun 1853.

Sponsors at John's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Joanna O'Hara.
  M ii
Roger O'HARA was born about 9 Nov 1854. He was christened on 9 Nov 1854.

Sponsors at Roger's baptism were William Maxwell and Anne Meehan.

It is possible that Roger married a woman named Winifred because the 1901 census shows a return for the household of a Roger O'Hara, aged 50, of Clegna, Cootehall (Ardcarn), where it is believed the father of our Roger used to farm. Listed with Roger in the census are his wife, Winifred, aged 45, and a servant. Another possibility is that the Roger from the census is Roger, son of Patrick O'Hara and Honoria Lavin of Clegna, who was born in 1846.
  M iii
Michael O'HARA was born about 12 Aug 1858. He was christened on 12 Aug 1858.

  F vi
Teresa O'HARA was born about 20 Aug 1864. She was christened on 20 Aug 1864.

Sponsors at Teresa's baptism were William Maxwell and Eleanor O'Hara.
  M vii
William O'HARA was born about 22 Dec 1866. He was christened on 22 Dec 1866.

Sponsors at William's baptism  were Roger O'Hara and Johanna O'Hara.

It is possible that William married a woman named Eliza because the 1901 census shows a return for the household of a William O'Hara, aged 32, of Clegna, Cootehall (Ardcarn). Listed with William are his 26-year-old wife, Eliza, and his father, 75-year-old widower named Patrick. Ten years later the same household has the following listed:
Patrick (84)
William (46), son
Lizzie (40), daughter-in-law
Lawrence (10), grandson
Margaret M. (8), granddaughter
William and Lizzie had been married 11 years and had five children born alive, only two of whom were still alive at the time of the census.
  M viii
Patrick O'HARA was born in 1867.

Eleanor O'HARA was born about 12 Jul 1877. She was christened on 12 Jul 1877.

Sponsors at Eleanor's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Catherine O'Hara.

James TOBIN [Parents] was born about 1836 in probably Cootehall area, Co. Roscommon. He died in probably 1923 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon. James married Catherine O'HARA on 27 Apr 1861 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

According to his marriage certificate, James's residence prior to his marriage was Ardcarn (Cootehall).

In the 1901 census, James's age is given as 60, Catherine's as 56 and their son James's as 27. However, their ages are given in the 1911 census as 74, 73 and 42 respectively. We also told in the 1911 census that James and Catherine had been married 50 years and had nine children born alive, all nine of whom were still alive at the time of the census.

A death record has been located on the Ancestry website for a James Tobin who died in the Boyle registration district of Co. Roscommon aged 91 in the first quarter of 1923. Given that the Tobin surname was relatively uncommon in Connaught I believe this record is related to James.

Catherine O'HARA [Parents] was born about 1837 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died in possibly 1918 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon. Catherine married James TOBIN on 27 Apr 1861 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

According to her marriage certificate, Catherine's residence prior to her marriage was Ardcarn (Cootehall).

A death record has been located on the Ancestry website for a Catherine Tobin who died in the Boyle registration district of Co. Roscommon aged 80 in the first quarter of 1918. Given that the Tobin surname was relatively uncommon in Connaught I believe this record is related to Catherine (even though the derived year of birth differs from the that of the 1911 census - in rural Ireland at that time it was not important to remember one's exact year of birth).

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Robert Dayly, Ardcarn, and Maria Fanning, Ardcarn.

They had the following children.

F i Mary Eleanor TOBIN was born about 23 Feb 1862. She died in Sep 1948.
  F ii
Brigid TOBIN was born about 22 Oct 1863 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 22 Oct 1863.

Sponsors at Brigid's baptism were John Daly and Maria O'Hara.

  F x
Elizabeth (Lizzie) TOBIN was born in 1876 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon.

Roger O'HARA [Parents] was born about 1839 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died on 31 May 1911 in Knockaduff, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Roger married Catherine MCGREEVEY on 11 Aug 1869 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

According to his marriage certificate, Roger's residence prior to his marriage was Oxhill (there is an Oxhill in the parish of Knockvicar in Boyle, Co. Roscommon).

There is a census return for the household of a Roger O'Hara (aged 54) of Knockaduff, Ardcarn (Cootehall) with a wife named Catherine (50), and children, Mary (27), Patrick (20), Kate (22), Michael (18), and a grand-daughter, Mary Ellen Flanagan (4). Because our Roger's father farmed in Knockaduff, there is a possibility that the Roger in the census could be our Roger, above. However, with the exception of Patrick, there is no match between the children's names listed on the census return and the list provided by the family (see below). Furthermore, the Patrick from the census was born about 1880 whereas Patrick, son of Roger above, was born in 1872. The same family is listed in the 1911 census (Roger, Catherine and children Patrick, Catherine and Michael) with the additional information that Roger and Catherine had been married for 41 years (which ties in perfectly with our Roger's date of marriage) and had eight children born alive, all of whom were still alive at the time of the census).

Catherine MCGREEVEY was born about 1837 in Co. Roscommon. She died after 31 May 1911. Catherine married Roger O'HARA on 11 Aug 1869 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Denis TREACY died. Denis married Bridget O'DWYER on 28 Jan 1823 in Tipperary.

It has not been possible to link this Treacy family to our Treacys, but there may be a connection because this Treacy family lived in the parish of Tipperary which is close to Soloheadbeg where our Treacy family was from. The information on this family was provided by Tipperary Family History Research (TFHR) and it was the only Treacy family they could find in the Tipperary/Solohead area which had brothers Denis and Thomas born between about 1820 and 1840, which would tie in with our Treacy family. However, the father of the TFHR Denis and Thomas was Denis and not John. It is nevertheless worth including this Treacy family on the website.
