Denis (Denny) HANRAHAN [Parents] was born in possibly about 1833 in possibly Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died before 30 Mar 1901 in probably Moohane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. Denis married Margaret COLLINS on 16 Feb 1863 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

A baptismal record has been located (on www.irishgenealogy.ie) for a Denis Hanrahan, son of John Hanrahan and Neasa Kennelly, who was baptised in Moyvane on 25 May 1833. Sponsors were Patrick Sheehan and Ellen Sheehan. Could this record relate to our Denny above? John and Neasa had another son, Timothy, who was baptised on 19 June 1935 (sponsors were Daniel Kennelly and Ellen Hanrahan).

Note: According to his marriage record on the Irish Genealogy website (www.irishgenealogy.ie) Denny was from Kilehenny in Ballybunion rather than the expected Kilbaha.

Margaret COLLINS was born about 1842 in Moohane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. She died on 4 Jul 1923 in Moohane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. Margaret married Denis (Denny) HANRAHAN on 16 Feb 1863 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

Margaret inherited the Collins family farm in Moohane where she and her husband, Denny, lived. The farm had originally belonged to Enright ancestors of Margaret's who were landlords and lived in Garryard, near Listowel, Co. Kerry. The Moohane farm was given to one of the Enright daughters when she married a Mr. Collins from Drombeg, near Listowel.

They had the following children.

F i Jane HANRAHAN was born about 28 Jan 1864. She died on 29 Jul 1926.
  F ii
Ann HANRAHAN was born about 14 Oct 1865 in Moohane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 16 Oct 1865 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.
M iii John (John Denny) HANRAHAN was born about 23 Jan 1868. He died on 2 Mar 1946.
  M iv
William HANRAHAN was born about 3 Sep 1869 in Moohane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 5 Sep 1869 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.
M v Timothy Denis HANRAHAN was born about 20 Jul 1871. He died on 25 Apr 1942.
  M vi
Michael (Mike Denny) HANRAHAN was born about 1 May 1873 in Moohane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 3 May 1873 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.
F vii Catherine HANRAHAN was born about 5 Mar 1875. She died on 25 Oct 1955.

James (Jim) HANRAHAN [Parents] was born in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died. James married 'UNKNOWN'.

There is a 1901 census return for the household of a James Hanrahan, aged 68, of Kilbaha North. It is possible that this James may be our Jim because both had children named John and Denis, but there is not enough evidence to suggest that this is definitely the case.

The full census details are:
James (68)
Ellen (60), wife
John (38), son
Denis (20), son
Ellie (14), daughter

The 1911 return shows John, James's son, as the head of his own household in Kilbaha South. Details are:
John J. (47)
Annie (30), wife
Ellie (7), daughter
Bridget (5), daughter
Johanna (3), daughter
James (2), son
Jerry (8 months), son
Ellen (74), mother (who could speak both Irish and English)
Denis (28), brother
John J. and Annie had been married eight years and had five children born alive, all of whom were alive at the time of the census.

Baptismal records have been located for the following children born to a James Hanrahan and Ellen Sheahan of Kilbaha:

John (baptised on 4 January 1863 with sponsors Michael Hanrahan and Margaret Cunningham)
Patrick (baptised on 2 October 1864 with sponsors Patrick Sheahan and (what looks like) Janeta Kennelly)
Janeta (baptised on 24 September 1865 with sponsors John Shine and Mary Hanrahan)
Johanna Hanrahan (baptised on 9 December 1869 with sponsors Callaghan (sic) Sheahan and Brigid Hanrahan)
Catherine Hanrahan (born on 1 January 1872, baptised on 3 January 1872 with sponsors were John Hanrahan and Ellen Shine)

Could Catherine be Katie, daughter of Jim above? And could the other children be additional children that we did not know about?

In Ahavoher Cemetery in Moyvane is the grave of James J. Hanrahan of Kilbaha who died 30 June 1990 aged 81. Could this be the grave of two-year-old son James above from the 1911 census. James J. is buried with his wife, Ellen (née Shanahan) who died on 8 September 1992, also aged 81.

'UNKNOWN' died. 'UNKNOWN' married James (Jim) HANRAHAN.

They had the following children.

John (John Jim) HANRAHAN died.

A baptismal record has been located (on www.irishgenealogy.ie) for a John Hanrahan, son of James Hanrahan and Ellen Sheahan of Kilbaha, who was baptised on 12 February 1863. Baptismal sponsors were Michael Hanrahan and Margaret Cunningham. Could this record could relate to John above? If it does, then we know John had the following siblings:

Patrick who was baptised on 2 October 1864 with baptismal sponsors Patrick Sheahan and Jane Kennelly
Jane who was baptised on 24 September 1865 with sponsors John Shine and Mary Hanrahan
Johanna who was baptised on 9 December 1869 with sponsors Callaghan Sheahan and Bridget Hanrahan
Catherine who was baptised on 3 January 1872 with sponsors John Hanrahan and Ellen Shine (our John Jim above had a sister named Catherine)
Mary who was baptised on 5 June 1876 with sponsors William Hanrahan and Johanna Hanrahan
Ellen who was baptised on 28 May 1878 with sponsors John Hanrahan and Jane Hanrahan
Denis  who was baptised on 10 June 1880 with sponsors Patrick Hanrahan and Jane Hanrahan (our John Jim above had a brother named Denis)

Michael HANRAHAN died.

In family notes outlining Michael's branch of the Hanrahan family tree, the word 'sapper' and 'Aust.' (presumably meaning Australia) appear after Michael's name. A search of World War I casualties on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website (www.cwgc.org) shows that a Michael Francis Hanrahan, a private in the Australian army, died on 11 April 1917 in northern France. However, no information as to his age or his parents' names and address is given so there is no evidence that Michael Francis Hanrahan is our Michael above.

Catherine (Katie) HANRAHAN died.

Cornelius (Corney) HANRAHAN [Parents] was born in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died. Cornelius married 'UNKNOWN'.

Hanrahan researchers may be interested in a Cornelius Hanrahan listed in one of www.Ancestry.com's family trees. It is a possibility that that this Cornelius is the above Cornelius. The parents of the Cornelius on Ancestry.com are John Hanrahan and Nora Keane. It is stated that Cornelius married a Mary Culhane, and there are six children of theirs listed in the family tree: Margaret Mary, John, Thomas, Nano, Kate and Ellen. There is information on Margaret Mary only: she was born in Lenamore, Co. Kerry; she married Michael Hickie from Puleen, Co. Kerry in 1878; and she died in Co. Kerry in 1925. Unfortunately there is little in the above information to prove that Margaret Mary's father is Cornelius Hanrahan above.

Another Cornelius Hanrahan, who may or may not be connected to any of the above, became a priest and served in East Malvern, Melbourne, Australia. Cornelius, who died on 20 September 1945, was the eldest son of Denis (who predeceased Fr. Cornelius) and Mary Hanrahan from Aughrim, Moyvane.

'UNKNOWN' died. 'UNKNOWN' married Cornelius (Corney) HANRAHAN.

They had the following children.

  M i
Daniel (Dan) HANRAHAN died.
  F ii
Margaret HANRAHAN died in Deceased.

A marriage record has been located for a Margaret Hanrahan of Kilbaha who married a John Kennelly of Kilbaha on 7 February 1861. Unfortunately the fathers' names are not shown on the record. Could this Margaret possibly be Margaret, daughter of Corney Hanrahan? A Michael Hanrahan witnessed the marriage.

Catherine (Katie) HANRAHAN died.

Patrick (Pat) HANRAHAN [Parents] was born on 16 Mar 1896 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 18 Mar 1896 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 15 Apr 1969 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Patrick married Breda (Julia) SHANAHAN on 28 Sep 1929 in Newcastle registration district, Co. Limerick.

Pat's baptismal sponsors were Michael Hanrahan and Mary Hanrahan.

Breda (Julia) SHANAHAN [Parents] was born about 1903 in Dirreen, Athea, Co. Limerick. She died on 30 Aug 1968 in Limerick. She was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Breda married Patrick (Pat) HANRAHAN on 28 Sep 1929 in Newcastle registration district, Co. Limerick.

Julia and Patrick lived in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

They had the following children.

M i John Michael HANRAHAN was born about 1930. He died in Mar 2004.
