Patrick (Paddy) HANLON married Margaret (Madge) STACK.

Madge and Paddy farmed in Asdee in Ballylongford.

Margaret (Madge) STACK [Parents] was born 3 Mar 1881 in the Hill, Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in Asdee, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Margaret married Patrick (Paddy) HANLON.

Edmond (Ned) STACK [Parents] was born 4 Jan 1878 in the Hill, Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died 9 Nov 1957 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Edmond married Bridget (Bridie) HANLON.

Tom attended St. Michael's College in Listowel and studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin. He practiced in London where he lived for the rest of his life. He never married.

John CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born about 1851 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He married Honora (Nora) CREGAN (caution: not verified) about 1891.

The information below on John's family may be incorrect: I was given detailed information on John and his family by a very reliable family source but when I came across their details in the 1901 census, I saw that John's mother is listed as Margaret (rather than Johanna, who had died in 1897). Furthermore John's county of birth is given as Limerick in the census whereas our John was born in Kerry. Therefore either the family listed below is not that of our John or errors were made in filling out the census form (Margaret may have been John's mother-in-law, for example). Any assistance in establishing the correct names of John's family members would be much appreciated. If you can help, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com. Thank you. For now I have added cautions to the names of John's wife and children.

Honora (Nora) CREGAN (caution: not verified) was born about 1859 in Co. Kerry. She married John CUNNINGHAM about 1891.

John and Nora farmed at Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick.

According to the 1911 census, John and Nora had been married for 20 years and had eight children born alive, seven of whom were alive at time of the census. All seven are listed but they don't include Johanna who I'm told by a family source emigrated to the United States. John and Nora definitely had a daughter named Johanna, born in 1897, so it's possible she died as a child. However John and Nora had another child (John, born in 1893) who appears to have died before the 1911 census, which doesn't tie in with their declaration that only one child was not alive at the time of the census.

They had the following children:

  M i
Bryan CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 2 Nov 1891 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died in probably U.S..

Bryan emigrated to the United States.
  M ii
John CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 3 Apr 1893 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died before 10 Feb 1899 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John died as a child.
  F iii
Margaret CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 1893 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died in probably U.S..

Margaret emigrated to the United States.
  M iv
Denis CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 25 Jun 1894 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died in probably U.S..

Denis emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 4 March 1921. His contact in New York was his brother John who had emigrated the year before and who lived at 2437 8th Avenue.
  M v
Richard CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 20 Dec 1895 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died in probably U.S..

Richard emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 3 April 1923. Acording to the ship manifest his contact in New York was his brother John who had emigrated three years earlier and who lived at 2437 8th Avenue.
  F vi
Johanna CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 7 Sep 1897 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died probably bef 2 Apr 1911.

Johanna must have died as a child as, accordong to the 1911 census, her parents had eight children born alive, seven of whom were still alive at the time of the census; the list of seven children named in the census return does not include Johanna.
  F vii
John CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 10 Feb 1899 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died after 1998 in U.S..

John emigrated to the United States at the age of 21, arriving in New York on 11 June 1920. His contact in New York was a cousin, Denis Cregan, who lived in Long Island City. It appears John may have been the first of seven siblings to emigrate (only one remained in Ireland).
  F viii
Catherine CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 23 Jan 1901 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died in Glin, Co. Limerick.

Catherine was the only member of the family who didn't emigrate. She never married.

Patrick (Paddy) CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 1 Nov 1904 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died 4 Jun 1972 in Glin, Co. Limerick and was buried in Kilfergus Cemetery, Glin, Co. Limerick.

Paddy emigrated to the United States and retired to Glin where he died. He never married.

Nicholas MADDEN [Parents] was born about 1844 in probably Kilgarvan, Lisselton, Co. Kerry. He died 23 Apr 1919 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was buried in Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. Nicholas married Sarah NOLAN on 14 Feb 1888 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

According to Nicholas's death certificate the cause of death was "probably paralysis, twelve months, no medical attendant".

Much of the information below on the family of Nicholas and his wife, Sarah, has come from the genealogical research of their granddaughter Mary Lane (née O'Sullivan) of Meenkilly, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. I'm very grateful to Mary and her family for sharing their knowledge.

Madden researchers may also be interested in the following:

An Ellen Madden of Lower Kilgarvan died on 30 December 1978 aged 77. A Sr. Jude Madden of Kilgarvan and the Redcote Convent, Southampton died on 23 June 1982.

Sarah NOLAN [Parents] was born 23 Dec 1864 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died Dec 1947 in possibly Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. Sarah married Nicholas MADDEN on 14 Feb 1888 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Unfortunately I have been unable to locate a 1911 census return for the household of Sarah and her husband, Nicholas. According to National Archives of Ireland online records, there were no returns at all from the townland of Lenamore. Nor was there a Nicholas or Sarah Madden listed at all in 1911 records for anywhere in Kerry.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Sarah and Nicholas were Daniel Madden and Katie Nolan (probably Sarah's sister).

They had the following children:

  F i
Catherine (Katie) MADDEN was born 7 Dec 1888 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 11 Dec 1888 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died 6 Nov 1962 in possibly Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was buried in Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

Catherine's baptismal sponsors were Daniel Madden and Catherine Nolan.

Catherine, who never married, lived in Lenamore.
F ii Margaret (Maggie) MADDEN was born 27 Jan 1890 and died Jun 1965.
F iii Mary MADDEN was born 16 Jan 1892 and died Jun 1961.
  F iv
Sarah MADDEN was born 22 Jul 1893 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 23 Jul 1893 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died Sep 1942 in New York.

Sarah's baptismal sponsors were Thomas Fitzmaurice and Margaret Shine.

Sarah emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 25 September 1914. She was joining her sister Margaret who was living at 126 East 98th St. in New York. Sarah made the voyage to the States with a Nora Madden, daughter of a Daniel Madden of [what looks like] Asdee, Ballylongford. Perhaps Sarah and Nora were cousins. Nora was travelling on to Chicago to join her sister Mary.
  F v Bridget MADDEN was born 9 Feb 1895 and died 25 Mar 1970.
M vi Daniel (Danny) MADDEN was born 3 Jun 1896 and died Jul 1971.

Elizabeth's baptismal sponsors were Thomas Healy and Mary Scanlon.

Elizabeth was only 24 years of age when she died.
  F viii
Ann (Annie) MADDEN was born 10 Jul 1899 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 11 Jul 1899 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died Apr 1983 in possibly Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Annie's baptismal sponsor was Margaret Madden (no second sponsor was recorded).

Annie joined the Sisters of Mercy order, becoming Sr. Mary Dolores. According to a family source Sr. Mary Dolores may have been an assistant matron at the old St. Catherine's Hospital in Tralee, while the death notice of her sister Katie tells us that Sr. Mary Dolores was based at St. John's Convent, Tralee (located in Balloonagh and attached to a school). As both institutions were Mercy-run, it's possible Sr. Mary Dolores worked at both.

Joseph MADDEN was born 1901 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He died 24 Sep 1969 in Well St., Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was buried in Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

Joseph was a priest in Sacramento, California.

A death notice for Joseph, located in the Irish Independent online archives, tells us that he died suddenly on 24 September 1969 at the home of his sister Mrs. James (this should have read Michael) Fitzgerald of Well St. Ballylongford.
F x Jane MADDEN was born possibly 1905 and died 22 Dec 1985.

Jim and Kathleen farmed at Gortdromagowna, Knockanure. Their farm was called "The Hill", so named, at least as far back as the 1870s, to reflect the topography and to distinguish the property from those of four other O'Connor families in the area at the time.
