All Families and Individuals

Daniel CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born in abt 1780s in Co. Limerick; or Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Daniel married Honora ENRIGHT.

It is not known if Daniel had more children than those listed below. We know of a Mary Cunningham who married a William Stack and who had a daughter named Margaret who was baptised in Moyvane on 22 April 1858 with sponsors Bernardus (equivalent of Bryan) Cunningham and Maria Enright. Could Mary have been a daughter of Daniel's? We know she was not a daughter of Daniel's brother Myles as Myles's daughter Mary married either a James Moore or a Pat O'Sullivan.

And there was a James Cunningham of Kilbaha, married to a Honora Thornton, who had at least two children: Elizabeth, baptised on 7 December 1841 (sponsors were Michael Thornton and Mary Thornton) and Daniel, baptised on 18 May 1844 (with sponsors Daniel Cunningham and Honora Cunningham). Could James have been a son of Daniel's?

Also, we know from a search of Newtownsandes baptismal records in the National Library in Dublin that a Cornelius Cunningham of Kilbaha, who was married to a Brigid Kennelly, had a daughter named Mary who was baptised on 20 September 1868 (with Honora Stack as a sponsor). Could Cornelius possibly have been a son of Daniel's, or a son of Daniel's brother Myles? We have since learned that Cornelius lived in Athea, Co. Limerick where Bridget, his wife, and all his children, except Mary, were born. Cornelius and Bridget had 12 children: Catherine (born in January 1864, probably died as a child), John (December 1864), Michael (1866), Mary (1868, probably died as a child), another Catherine (c.1870, probably died as a child), another Mary (c.1870),  Patrick (1872), Johanna (1873) who was known as Nonie, Bridget (1875), Cornelius (1877), Denis (1879) and another Catherine (1881) who was known as Kate. Michael, Mary, Nonie and Denis emigrated to the United States, settling in Kansas City, Missouri. Their mother too emigrated to Kansas City; she was about 60 years of age and left Cornelius back in Ireland. The 1911 census of Ireland tells us that Cornelius, aged 77, was living in Dirreen, Athea at that time. Bridget died in Kansas in 1922.

Steve Cunningham in the U.S. tells me his great-great-grandparents were Cornelius Cunningham (born about 1836 in Co. Kerry) and Bridget Kennelly (place of birth unknown but she was a daughter of Patrick Kennelly and Mary Mullane) who lived with their family in the Athea area of Co. Limerick, not far from Kilbaha. It is possible that Steve's great-great-grandparents were the same couple whose daughter Mary was baptised in Newtownsandes in September 1868. In case there is indeed a connection between Steve's Cunningham family and the Cunningham family which includes the aforementioned Mary, here's a little more detail on Steve's family: Bridget emigrated to the U.S. in 1906 with her son Denis, his wife Catherine (Katie) O'Sullivan and their two young children, Mary and Cornelius. They settled in Kansas City, Kansas where Bridget died in 1922. Denis and Katie later moved across the state line to Kansas City, Missouri. If anyone has further information on Cornelius and Bridget, an email in the first instance to Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com would be much appreciated.

Honora ENRIGHT died. Honora married Daniel CUNNINGHAM.

They had the following children.

  F i
Ellen CUNNINGHAM was born about 10 Jan 1812 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 12 Jan 1812 in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Neilus Cunningham and Catherine Stack.
M ii Bryan (Little Bryan) "Little Bryan" CUNNINGHAM was born about 25 May 1813. He died in possibly 4 February 1894.
  F iii
Mary CUNNINGHAM was born about 4 Aug 1815 in possibly Knockreigh, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 6 Aug 1815 in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

A Mary Cunningham who was married to a William Stack and who lived in Kilbaha, had at least two children, Ellen (born in 1851) and Margaret (1858), both born in Kilbaha. Margaret's baptismal sponsor was a Bryan Cunningham, which leads me to think that Mary above, who had a brother named Bryan, might have been the Mary Cunningham who married William Stack.
  F iv
Margaret CUNNINGHAM was born about 28 Aug 1818 in possibly Knockreigh, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 30 Aug 1818 in Listowel, Co. Kerry.
  F v
Bridget CUNNINGHAM was born about 4 Feb 1820 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 6 Feb 1820 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.
F vi Johanna CUNNINGHAM was born about 21 Nov 1823. She died on 2 Sep 1902.
  M vii
John CUNNINGHAM was born about 14 May 1825 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 16 May 1825 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.
F viii Catherine CUNNINGHAM was born about 15 Apr 1830.

Bryan (Little Bryan) "Little Bryan" CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born about 25 May 1813 in possibly Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 27 May 1813 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly 4 February 1894 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Little Bryan married Catherine DANAHER (caution: not verified).

A Bryan Dan Cunningham died in Kilbaha on 4 February 1894 aged 79 (giving an estimated birth year of 1814, a close match with Little Bryan's birth year. Furthermore the name Bryan Dan indicates that his father's name was Dan (following the tradition at the time of adding the father's name to the first name to distinguish the person from others of the same name in the area. I therefore believe that Bryan Dan is our Little Bryan. Bryan Dan's death record tells us he was married (rather than widowed), indicating that our Bryan's wife, Honora, outlived him. The informant's name was Pat McMahon of Kilbaha, a neighbour perhaps.

Catherine DANAHER (caution: not verified) died. Catherine married Bryan (Little Bryan) CUNNINGHAM "Little Bryan".

We are not entirely certain that Bryan's wife was Catherine Danaher but we are assuming she was because baptismal records were located for six children of a Bernardus (equivalent of Bryan) Cunningham and a Catherine Danaher of Kilbaha (including a Margaret whose name was included in a list of Little Bryan's children that I had already been provided with). As far as I can ascertain, there was only one other Bryan Cunningham living in Kilbaha in the 1850s and '60s when these children were born. He was Little Bryan's first cousin and was married to a Johanna Hudson. I am therefore making the assumption that Little Bryan was married to Catherine Danaher but because I have been unable to verify this I have added the caution.

They had the following children.

  M i
Daniel CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 10 Oct 1855 in Kilbaha, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 Oct 1855 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Daniel's baptism were John Cunningham and Margaret Stack.
  F ii
Mary CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 5 Mar 1857 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 5 Mar 1857 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were William Hartnett and Mary Cunningham.

It is possible that Mary may have married a Nicholas Costello as a marriage record has been located (on www.irishgenealogy.ie) for a Mary Cunningham who married a Nicholas Costello  of Coolaclarig, Listowel, Co. Kerry on 31 July 1882 in Moyvane. Witnesses were John Shanahan and William Hudson. Mary's father's name is given on the marriage record as B. Daniel (possibly Bryan Daniel, as our Mary's father would have been known as he was Bryan and his father was Daniel). Nicholas was born in 1858 to Nicholas Costello and Ellen Walsh. From census records we know that Mary and Nicholas farmed in Coolaclarig and had three children: Thomas (born about 1884), Nicholas (about 1890) and Mary (about 1891).
F iii Hanora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM was born about 1 Sep 1858.
  M iv

M v Maurice CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 20 May 1862. He died on 25 Apr 1924.
M vi James (Jim) CUNNINGHAM was born about 1863. He died on 27 May 1928.
  F vii
Margaret (Maggie) CUNNINGHAM was born about 20 Oct 1863 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 22 Oct 1863 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Margaret's baptism were Hanora Cunningham and John Healy.

Maggie's age (29) at the time of the 1901 census doesn't tie in with her baptismal date which would have made her 37 at the time of the 1901 census.

In the 1901 census Maggie is listed in the return of the household of her brother James in Kilbaha North. Her occupation is given as shopkeeper.
  F viii
Johanna (Joanie) CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.
  F ix
Ann (Nance) CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.

Roger was an engineer with the Nabisco food company in Chicago.

Ida Elizabeth KEATING [Parents] was born on 18 Nov 1906 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died in 1995 in Chicago. Ida married Roger HARTY in 1949 in St. Mary's Cathedral, Killarney, Co. Kerry.

Ida also went by the name of Elizabeth, and her name on her Petition for Citizenship form (submitted in 1932) was given as Elizabeth Margaret Cynthia. She emigrated to the United States in 1925. In 1949 she returned to Ireland to marry Roger Harty who was from Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. Her trip home was unexpectedly lengthened owing to the start of a six-month shipping strike shortly after her arrival. She and Roger were married the day before the strike ended by her uncle the Very Right Reverend Dan Finucane. Ida returned to the States the following day and Roger travelled seven months later, arriving on the day of the funeral of Ida's brother David, a Chicago policeman killed in the line of duty.

James (Jim) CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born about 1863 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 27 May 1928 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. James married Johanna (Hannie) STACK on 20 Nov 1897 in Listowel registration district, Co. Kerry.

Most of the information below on James's wife and family comes from the 1901 census return for the household of a James Cunningham of Kilbaha North who I am fairly sure is our James above. For one thing, the census indicates that James was born about 1862, around the time that our James would have been born. Secondly, it shows that James' eldest son's name is Bryan, probably following the practice at the time of naming the first-born son after his paternal grandfather.

Johanna (Hannie) STACK [Parents] was born on 7 Mar 1874 in Beale, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. Johanna married James (Jim) CUNNINGHAM on 20 Nov 1897 in Listowel registration district, Co. Kerry.

According to the 1911 census, Hannie and her husband, James had been married for 13 years; they had had five children born alive, all five of whom were still living by 1911.
