DESCENDANTS OF 'unknown' CUNNINGHAM (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Third Generation

5. Bryan CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born abt 1810s in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

One would have expected that the name Myles would have been given to Bryan's first-born son, following the tradition at the time of naming the eldest son after the child's paternal grandfather. Perhaps Bryan did have a first-born son called Myles who may have died young.

Bryan married Johanna HUDSON, daughter of Richard HUDSON and Margaret FINUCANE, in 1847 in Gortmore House, Strand St., Tralee, Co. Kerry. Johanna was born about 24 Nov 1820 in probably Trieneragh, Duagh, Co. Kerry and was christened 26 Nov 1820 in Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died 1 Dec 1897 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Johanna's mothers name appears as Mary (rather than Margaret) on her baptismal record (as provided on www.irishgenealogy.ie).

It's possible Johanna and her family were living in Gortmore House (the old Hudson family home and now the Bon Secours Hospital) on Strand Street in Tralee at the time of her marriage in 1847 as she and Bryan were married there. It was common practice at the time to marry in the bride's home; after 1850 it became mandatory to marry in a church.

According to Tom Sheehan of Kilbaha, one of her great-grandnephews, Johanna was remembered as "a very tall and strong lady who could carry a heavy sack of meal up a hill". She and Bryan may have had more children than those listed below.

They had the following children:

+ 22 M i John CUNNINGHAM was born about 1851.
+ 23 M ii Richard (Richie) CUNNINGHAM was born about 2 Jun 1852 and died 24 Dec 1926.
+ 24 F iii Johanna CUNNINGHAM was born about 17 Jun 1854 and died 12 Dec 1927.
  25 M iv
James CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died date unknown.

Unfortunately nothing is known of James. There is a 1901 census return for the household of a James Cunningham in Kilbaha North, but it's probable this relates to James's second cousin, James, who was a son of 'Little Bryan' Cunningham. Both Jameses had sisters named Margaret, and a Maggie Cunningham is listed in the census return as a sister to the head of the household, but the sister of the above James was long married by 1901 and is listed as Margaret Hanrahan in the return for her own family's household elsewhere in Kilbaha.
+ 26 M v Edward CUNNINGHAM was born about 15 Nov 1856 and died 11 Jan 1924.
+ 27 F vi Margaret CUNNINGHAM was born about 1 Oct 1858 and died 1918.

6. Honora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 1826 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died after 31 Mar 1901.

Honora married James (Jim) THORNTON on 10 Feb 1844 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. James died before 31 Mar 1901.

There a James Thornton listed in Griffiths Valuation (1848-1864) who occupied land in Kilbaha Middle in the parish of Murher (Moyvane). This James is the only Thornton listed for the entire barony of Iraghticonnor, of which Murher is a part, which suggests that this James is our Jim above.

Jim and Norrie may have had another daughter, named Catherine. A marriage record has been located for a Catherine Thornton of Kilbaha, daughter of James Thornton, who married Daniel Kennelly of Kilbaha, son of John Kennelly, on 17 February 1876. Witnesses were John Kennelly and Richard Hudson. Catherine and Daniel had a son, named John, who was baptised in Moyvane on 16 June 1877. Sponsors were John [illegible] and [illegible] Kennelly.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were James Cunningham and James Connor.

James and Honora had the following children:

+ 28 F i Johanna THORNTON (caution: not verified) was born about 1845.
  29 F ii
Elizabeth THORNTON (caution: not verified) was born about 1846 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

From Elizabeth's marriage record we know her father was a James Thornton from Kilbaha but we cannot say for certain - although it's very likely - that Elizabeth was a daughter of Jim Thornton and Norrie Cunningham of Kilbaha, hence the caution.

Elizabeth married 'unknown' BROSNAHAN / BROSNAN, son of John BROSNAHAN / BROSNAN, on 15 Feb 1870 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. 'unknown' was born in probably Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

'unknown's first name is very difficult to read in the Moyvane parish marriage register but it looks like (the Latin) "Domilius", or could possibly be Cornelius.

Marriage Notes:

James Thornton of Kilbaha witnessed the marriage.

There's a note in the parish register alongside the marriage record for Elizabeth and John that reads "cosanguinitas in (what looks like) 3º et 3º" which means they were related but I'm unsure as to the meaning of "3º et 3º". Perhaps it means they were third cousins?

+ 30 F iii Margaret THORNTON (caution: not verified) died after 2 Apr 1911.
  31 M iv
John (Jack) THORNTON was born about 30 Jun 1852 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 2 Jul 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died date unknown.

The sponsor at Jack's baptism was James Harrington.

Jack lived in Kilbaha. It's thought he never married.
+ 32 F v Catherine (Kate) THORNTON (caution: not verified) was born about 1853 and died between 31 Mar 1901 and 2 Apr 1911.
+ 33 M vi Myles THORNTON was born about 25 Nov 1856 and died 7 Apr 1930.
  34 F vii
Hanora (Nonie) THORNTON was born about 27 Jun 1859 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 29 Jun 1859 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Hanora's baptism were Thomas Relihan and Mary Kearney. Her date of baptism doesn't tie in with her age as given in the 1911 census (44) but ages given in census returns are quite unreliable as people like to shave a few years off their real age or, as was common in days gone by, they genuinely didn't know their exact age as birthdays weren't celebrated as they are today.

Nonie lived in Kilbaha (possibly with her brother James as she is listed with him and his family in the 1911 census) and never married.
  35 M viii
Michael THORNTON was born about 4 Oct 1861 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 6 Oct 1861 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Michael's baptism were William Stack and Margaret Cunningham.
+ 36 M ix James THORNTON was born about 6 May 1864.
  37 M x
Francis THORNTON was born about 6 Mar 1866 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 8 Mar 1866 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Francis's baptism were Timothy Mulvihill and Johanna Cunningham.

7. Ellen CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 26 Apr 1825 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 28 Apr 1825 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ellen married Daniel (Dan) KEARNEY about 1850. Daniel was born in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

It's possible Dan's parents were Daniel Kearney and Mary Enright as a baptismal record has been found on www.irishgenealogy.ie for a Daniel Cearney (sic) of Kilbeaha (sic) who was baptised on 1 March 1812. It's also possible Dan was the Daniel Kearney of Kilbaha North as listed in Griffiths Valuation, carried out for the Kilbaha area in 1853. Daniel is the only Kearney listed for the whole of Kilbaha (North, South, West and Middle).

I have located a marriage record on www.irishgenealogy.ie for a Daniel Kearney and a Honora Cunningham who was from Kilbaha. The marriage took place on 8 February 1842. It probably doesn't relate to our Daniel and Ellen but it's woth noting in case there was a transcription error. Witnesses to this marriage were Miles Cunningham and Thomas Mulvihill.

They had the following children:

+ 38 F i Mary KEARNEY was born about 1850 and died after Apr 1917.
+ 39 M ii Patrick KEARNEY was born about 31 Jan 1851 and died Apr or May 1917.
  40 F iii
Honora KEARNEY (caution: not verified) was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I'm not completely certain that Daniel and Ellen Kearney had a daughter named Honora, hence the caution. However, a Honora Kearney, daughter of a Daniel Kearney of Kilbaha married a Denis Mullane in Moyvane in 1875.

Honora married Denis MULLANE on 17 Feb 1875 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Denis was born in probably Athea, Co. Limerick.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Maurice Scanlon and Michael Hanrahan.

+ 41 F iv Margaret KEARNEY was born about 17 Mar 1853 and died after Apr 1917.
+ 42 M v Myles KEARNEY was born about 2 Aug 1855.
  43 M vi
Daniel KEARNEY was born about 2 Aug 1855 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 4 Aug 1855 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Daniel's baptism were James Thornton and Mary Mulvihill.

Daniel married Ellen 'UNKNOWN'. Ellen was born about 1865.

It's possible Ellen's surname may have been Slattery because a Daniel Kearney of Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry married an Ellen Slattery of Listowel, Co. Kerry on 23 February 1895 in Listowel.
  44 F vii
Ellen KEARNEY was born about 22 Jun 1860 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 24 Jun 1860 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ellen's baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Mulvihill and Honora Healy.
+ 45 M viii Michael (Mike) KEARNEY was born about 12 Feb 1863 and died before 18 Dec 1957.
+ 46 F ix Johanna KEARNEY was born about 4 Apr 1865 and died after Apr 1917.

10. Margaret (Peg) CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 3 Mar 1835 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 5 Mar 1835 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. She died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Margaret's baptism were Daniel Kelly and Mary Kelly.

Margaret married Michael HANRAHAN, son of 'unknown' HANRAHAN, on 15 Jan 1854 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Michael was born in possibly Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died probably before 1902 in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

I'M VERY GRATEFUL TO PADRAIG KENNY FROM CO. LEITRIM WHO HAS PROVIDED SO MUCH OF THE INFORMATION BELOW ON MICHAEL, MARGARET AND THEIR FAMILY.

Note that the Hanrahan and Cunningham families would be connected once again by marriage: Michael's and Margaret's granddaughter, Lily (daughter of John "The Major" Hanrahan) would marry Paddy Finucane, a great-grandson of Margaret's brother Bryan.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Myles Cunningham and Richard Hanrahan.

Michael and Margaret had the following children:

+ 47 M i John ('The Major') HANRAHAN was born about 25 Jan 1856 and died after 2 Apr 1911.
  48 M ii
Patrick HANRAHAN was born about 10 Mar 1858 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 12 Mar 1858 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died probably young.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were Timothy Hanrahan and Margaret Hanrahan.
+ 49 M iii William HANRAHAN was born about 1 Jun 1860 and died 1918.
+ 50 F iv Johanna HANRAHAN was born about 2 Oct 1862 and died 1909.
  51 M v
James (Jim) HANRAHAN was born about 2 Jan 1866 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 4 Jan 1866 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died 1889 in Melbourne, Australia.

Sponsors at Jim's baptism were Timothy Hanrahan and Ellen Sheahan.

Jim died of typhoid fever in his twenties.
  52 F vi
Catherine HANRAHAN was born about 20 Mar 1868 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 22 Mar 1868 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died probably young.

Sponsors at Catherine's baptism were John Hanrahan and (what appears to be) Janetta Kennelly.
+ 53 F vii Mary Jane (Jane) HANRAHAN was born 5 Feb 1872 and died Nov 1945.
+ 54 M viii Michael HANRAHAN was born 5 Apr 1874 and died 1926.
  55 F ix
Margaret HANRAHAN was born about 5 Feb 1876 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 7 Feb 1876 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Margaret's baptismal sponsors' names are illegible on the parish register.

Margaret may have died young.
+ 56 F x Ellen (Ellie) HANRAHAN was born 7 Nov 1877 and died Nov 1934.

11. Johanna CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 25 Sep 1840 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 27 Sep 1840 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. She died possibly 1920.

Johanna and Biddy were twins.

Sponsors at Johanna's baptism were Brian Cunningham and Ellen Kerby.

Johanna married Thomas (Tom) CRONIN, son of John CRONIN, on 24 Feb 1857 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Thomas was born about 1831 in Leitrim West (Poul), Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died possibly 1912.

Tom and Johanna lived in Leitrim, Moyvane. According to the 1991 census, they had been married 55 years and had 16 children born alive, 11 of whom were still living at the time of the census. Listed with Tom and his family in the census return is a 12-year-old niece named Catherine Walsh indicating that a sister of Tom's had married a man by the name of Walsh (as far as we know, no sister of Johanna's married a Walsh).

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Thomas Fitzmaurice and John Cronin.

Thomas and Johanna had the following children:

  57 M i
John CRONIN was born about 7 Jan 1859 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 7 Jan 1859 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

John is listed, aged 52 and unmarried, in the 1911 census return for his parents' household. It's likely he inherited the farm.
  58 M ii
Timothy CRONIN was born about 24 Oct 1860 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 24 Oct 1860 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.
+ 59 F iii Mary CRONIN was born about 26 Oct 1862.
  60 M iv
Jeremiah CRONIN was born about 2 Aug 1868 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 2 Aug 1868 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.
  61 M v
Patrick CRONIN was born about 17 Mar 1870 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 17 Mar 1870 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in possibly San Francisco.

It's possible Patrick emigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco. There's an Ellis Island record for a Thomas Cronin, believed to be a son of Johanna Cunningham and Tom Cronin, who was headed to San Francisco to join his brother Patrick.
  62 F vi
Ellen CRONIN was born about 17 Jul 1872 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 17 Jul 1872 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died in possibly San Francisco.

Ellen emigrated to the United States as a young woman and settled in San Francisco. She was joined there in 1899 by her sisters Anne and Nora.
  63 F vii
Anne CRONIN was born about 17 Oct 1876 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 17 Oct 1876 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died in possibly San Francisco.

Anne emigrated to San Francisco in 1899.
  64 F viii
Margaret CRONIN was born about 17 Oct 1876 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 17 Oct 1876 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died before 22 May 1883 in probably Leitrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

It seems Margaret and Anne were twins. Because another Margaret was born to Tom and Johanna about seven years later, it's likely this Margaret died as a child.
  65 M ix
Thomas CRONIN was born about 1879 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in possibly San Francisco.

Tom and Johanna had either a son named Thomas or a close relative named Thomas Cronin who emigrated to San Francisco - a grandniece of Tom and Johanna, Nancy Manley, remembers a relative named Thomas Cronin often visting her parents in San Francisco (she also remembers a relative by the name of Mulvihill who visited). Based on this information, an Ellis Island record was located for a Thomas Cronin from Leitrim, Co. Kerry who emigrated in 1902 and was headed for San Francisco to join his brother Patrick. It seems likely therefore that this Thomas was a son of Tom and Johanna, although Thomas was not among the children of Tom and Johanna for whom birth or baptismal records were located. According to the ship manifest for Thomas's voyage, his brother Patrick lived at 48 Prospect St. in San Francisco, which was also the address of his probable cousin Josie O'Connor whose sister Nora travelled on the same voyage to the States as Thomas. It's believed by the family that Thomas never married.
  66 M x
Daniel (Dan) CRONIN was born about 31 Oct 1880 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 31 Oct 1880 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Dan is listed, aged 29 and unmarried, in the 1911 census return for his parents' household.

A Dan Cronin of Leitrim West died at the age of 91 in 1971. He was a widower and was buried in Knockanure Cemetery. His age ties in nicely with the year of birth of our Dan above so it's quite possible the Dan who died in 1971 is our Dan? We also know that a Dan Cronin of Leitrim West  had a daughter named Eileen who emigrated to San Francisco. Given the San Francisco connection of our Dan above (at least four of his siblings lived in San Francisco), it's possible Eileen was his daughter.
+ 67 F xi Honora (Nora) CRONIN was born 20 Jan 1883.
  68 F xii
Margaret CRONIN was born about 22 May 1883 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 22 May 1883 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Margaret is listed, aged 26 and unmarried, in the 1911 census return for her parents' household.

12. Brigid (Biddy) CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 25 Sep 1840 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 27 Sep 1840 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. She died before 2 Apr 1911 in probably Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Biddy and Johanna were twins. Biddy's baptismal sponsors were Alexander Ahern and Bridget Cunningham.

Biddy lived in the townland of Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry, where her husband, John Mulvihill, was born.

Brigid married John MULVIHILL, son of Jeremiah MULVIHILL, on 12 Feb 1861 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John was born about 1834 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John lived with his daughter Margaret (Mulvihill) and her family in Aughrim towards the end of his life.

Could John above have been related to a Fr. Michael Mulvihill who was born in 1847 in Aughrim to Patrick Mulvihill and Hannah Walsh?

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were John Stack and Michael Hanrahan.

John and Brigid had the following children:

  69 F i
Ellen MULVIHILL was born about 26 Nov 1861 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 28 Nov 1861 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Denis Mulvihill and Mary Mulvihill.
  70 F ii
Johanna MULVIHILL was born about 6 Jul 1863 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 8 Jul 1863 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were John Enright and Margaret Mulvihill.
+ 71 M iii Patrick MULVIHILL was born about 10 Feb 1865.
  72 F iv
Mary MULVIHILL was born about 20 Jul 1866 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 22 Jul 1866 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were John Wallace and Elizabeth Thornton.
  73 F v
Bridget MULVIHILL was born about 14 Jul 1868 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 16 Jul 1868 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Michael Mulvihill and Ellen Reidy.
  74 F vi
Honora MULVIHILL was born about 11 Feb 1870 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 13 Feb 1870 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Denis Mulvihill and Johanna Cunningham.
  75 M vii
Jeremiah MULVIHILL was born about 10 Aug 1871 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 12 Aug 1871 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Denis Mulvihill and Honora Fury.
+ 76 F viii Margaret MULVIHILL was born 8 May 1873 and died possibly 25 Jan 1963.
  77 F ix
Ann MULVIHILL was born 1 Jan 1875 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 3 Jan 1875 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Leonard Hanrahan and Mary Hanrahan.
  78 M x
John MULVIHILL was born about 26 Dec 1876 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 28 Dec 1876 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Enright and Ellen Mulvihill.

John is listed, unmarried, in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses as a member of the household of his brother Patrick.
  79 F xi
Catherine MULVIHILL was born about 10 Apr 1879 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 12 Apr 1879 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Michael Carr and Mary Carr.
  80 M xii
Michael (Mick) MULVIHILL died date unknown.

While I have no documented evidence that Mick was a son of John and Bridget's, I'm told he was, and that he was known as 'Mick the Manager' because he was assistant manager of Newtownsandes Co-Op Creamery. However I was also told that Mick was born in Kilbaha rather than Aughrim, so it's possible Mick wasn't after all a son of John and Bridget's.

Note: There was another Michael Mulvihill who had a long association with the creamery, working there from 1925 until 1973. Was he related to Mick above?

13. Anne (Nance) CUNNINGHAM "Nance" (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died before 31 Mar 1901.

Nance married Patrick (Pat) O'CONNOR, son of Thomas O'CONNOR and 'unknown' BROSNAN, on 19 Dec 1866 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Patrick was born about 1833 in Shronebeirne, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died after 2 Apr 1911.

After their marriage, Pat and Nance lived in Kilbaha - they were immediate neighbours of Nance's brother, Bryan.

There are 1901 and 1911 census returns from Kilbaha North for Pat's household. The 1901 returns give the following information:

Patrick (67), head
Thomas (31), son
Mary (28), daughter
James (26), son
Nora (22), daughter
John (19), son

In 1911, Pat is listed along with his son Thomas and daughter, Mary. It's possible Thomas and Mary never married.

Kevin O'Connor from Kent has provided information on Pat's family: Pat's father's name was Thomas O'Connor and his mother's last name was Brosnan. Besides Pat, Thomas had five other children that we know of: Mary, born in 1827; James (Kevin's great-grandfather), born in 1828 who went to farm in Meenahorna, Duagh; Thomas who farmed at Shronebeirne; John T. who moved to Farranpierce in the parish of Killehenny; and Denis who emigrated to the United States. Kevin has put his family history together in a book 'The Descendants of the O'Connors of Carrigafoyle Stemming from the Datheenachs Line' (2006). Besides  the O'Connors, other families covered in Kevin's work include the Brosnans of Shronebeirne, the Byrnes of Coolanelig in Duagh, the Keanes of Ballygrennan in Finuge, and many more. For further information contact Kevin at kevin@oconnor4488.fsworld.co.uk.

Marriage Notes:

The marriage was witnessed by Michael Hanrahan of Kilbaha, Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry.

Patrick and Nance had the following children:

  81 M i
Thomas O'CONNOR was born about 22 May 1868 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 24 May 1868 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Thomas's baptism were James Connor and Johanna Cunningham.
  82 M ii
Myles O'CONNOR was born about 22 Oct 1869 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 24 Oct 1869 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in possibly U.S..

Sponsors at Myles's baptism were Daniel Kearney and Margaret Kearney.

Myles emigrated to the United States in 1899. It's thought he lived initially in Poughkeepsie where he had a cousin (on the ship manifest, the cousin's name looks like Mary Lally of St. Mary's Church, Church St. Poughkeepsie) and later moved to New Jersey. It seems he subsequently lost contact with his family.
  83 F iii
Mary O'CONNOR was born 4 May 1871 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 13 May 1871 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were John Connor and Ellen Sheehy.
  84 M iv
James O'CONNOR was born 29 Dec 1873 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 3 Jan 1874 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

James's baptismal sponsors were John Connor and Margaret Thornton.

Unfortunately we have no further information on James.
+ 85 F v Johanna (Josie) O'CONNOR was born 28 Dec 1875 and died 29 Apr 1961.
+ 86 F vi Honora (Nora) O'CONNOR was born 27 Apr 1878 and died 29 Apr 1959.
  87 M vii
John O'CONNOR was born 13 Aug 1881 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 13 Aug 1881 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly U.S..

John's baptismal sponsors were Daniel Kearney and Mary Cunningham.

According to Ellis Island records, John emigrated to the United States in September 1906. He was headed for San Francisco to join his sister Josie. Unfortunately nothing more is known of him.

15. Bryan ("Little Bryan") CUNNINGHAM "Little Bryan" (Daniel , 'unknown' ) was born about 25 May 1813 in possibly Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 27 May 1813 in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Little Bryan married Catherine DANAHER (caution: not verified).

We're not completetely certain that Bryan's wife was Catherine Danaher but we are assuming it was because baptismal records were located for six children of a Bernardus (equivalent of Bryan) Cunningham and a Catherine Danaher of Kilbaha (including a Margaret whose name was included in a list of Little Bryan's children that I had already been provided with). As far as I can ascertain, there was only one other Bryan Cunningham living in Kilbaha in the 1850s and '60s when these children were born. He was Little Bryan's first cousin and was married to a Johanna Hudson. I am therefore making the assumption that Little Bryan was married to Catherine Danaher but because I have been unable to verify this I have added the caution.

They had the following children:

  88 M i
Daniel CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 10 Oct 1855 in Kilbaha, Co. Kerry and was christened 12 Oct 1855 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Daniel's baptism were John Cunningham and Margaret Stack.

Mary CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 5 Mar 1857 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 5 Mar 1857 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were William Hartnett and Mary Cunningham.

It's possible Mary may have married a Nicholas Costello as a marriage record has been located (on www.irishgenealogy.ie) for a Mary Cunningham who married a Nicholas Costello  of Coolaclarig, Listowel, Co. Kerry on 31 July 1882 in Moyvane. Witnesses were John Shanahan and William Hudson. Mary's father's name is given on the marriage record as B. Daniel (possibly Bryan Daniel, as our Mary's father would have been known as he was Bryan and his father was Daniel). Nicholas was born in 1858 to Nicholas Costello and Ellen Walsh. From census records we know that Mary and Nicholas farmed in Coolaclarig and had three children: Thomas (born about 1884), Nicholas (about 1890) and Mary (about 1891).
