Fourth Generation

(Continued)

115. James HARRINGTON (Johanna CUNNINGHAM , Daniel , 'unknown' ) was born about 20 Feb 1861 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 22 Feb 1861 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

James's baptismal sponsors were Timothy Cronin and Johanna Cunningham.

James married Mary KENNELLY, daughter of Patrick KENNELLY and Catherine GALVIN, on 18 Feb 1896 in Duagh, Co. Kerry. Mary was born about 1869 in probably Knockbrack, Duagh, Co. Kerry.

According to the 1911 census, James and Mary had been married for 14 years and had six children born alive, all of whom were alive at the time of the census.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Martin Sheehy and James Harrington.

James and Mary had the following children.

  417 M i
James (Sonny) HARRINGTON was born about 1898 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 18 Jan 1980 in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Sonny lived in the old Harrington family home in Kilbaha for many years before moving to Bridge Road in Listowel. It is thought that Sonny never married.

  418 M ii
Patrick HARRINGTON was born on 25 Jul 1899 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died before 18 Jan 1980 in probably U.S..

Patrick emigrated to the United States in 1922. According to Ellis Island records he was joining a cousin, James Nolan, in Brooklyn, New York. Patrick's younger brother Matthew joined Patrick in New York a year later.
+ 419 F iii Hanora (Hannah) HARRINGTON was born about 1900. She died on 17 Apr 1992.
  420 M iv
John HARRINGTON was born on 21 Apr 1902 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 26 Apr 1902 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died before 18 Jan 1980.
  421 M v
Matthew HARRINGTON was born on 21 Aug 1904 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

From a search of Ellis Island records it appears that Matthew emigrated to the United States in 1923. However, Matthew's father's name on the ship manisfest is given as Thomas Harrington (of Kilbaha) rather than James Harrington. Nevertheless, given the Kilbaha connection and the fact that both our Matthew and the Matthew from the Ellis Island record were 19 years of age and had a brother named Patrick who had already emigrated to the States (the Ellis Island record tells us that Matthew was joining his brother Patrick of 154 East 97th St. in New York), it is possible that it was our Matthew above who emigrated to the United States in 1923.

I have been told of a Matthew Harrington of Kilbaha who married a Jane (Janie) Egan, who was born on 6 February 1904 to John Egan and Catherine McMahon from Tarmons, Tarbert, Co. Kerry and who lived in Kilbaha It is possible that this Matthew was our Matthew above. If so, then it appears that Matthew returned to live in Ireland.

A Matthew Harrington of Kilbaha, who died on 5 November 1973 aged 69, is buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane. However this is not the Matthew Harrington who married Janie Egan as the Matthew in Ahavhoher Cemetery was single, according to Ahavoher burial records, which also tell us that this Matthew died of Parkinsons Disease. In another grave in Ahavoher is buried Janie Harrington (née Egan) of Kilbaha, who died on 27 February 1973. This may be our Matthew's wife. From Ahavoher burial records we know that Janie was 69 years of age when she died. This is probably the Jane Egan who was born on 6 February 1904 in Tarmons.

If anyone can help with further information on Matthew and Janie I would be very grateful. Please send an email to Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com.

Matthew married Jane (Janie) EGAN (Caution: not verified). Jane was born about 1902 in Tarmons East, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. She died in possibly 27 February 1973.

Daniel HARRINGTON was born on 21 Jun 1907 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 27 Jun 1907 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly bebore 18 Jan 1980 in possibly Rockaway, Queens, New York. He was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, New York.

Daniel emigrated to the United States in 1925 and settledd in New York.

In 1940 he was working as a shipping clerk at a paper mill (according to the 1940 census), and (according to a Morrissey family source) he became completely deaf following service in world War II during which he was subjected to the noise of artillery fire.

Daniel and his wife, Joan, had no children.

Daniel married Johanna (Hannah, Joan) MORRISSEY, daughter of 'unknown' MORRISSEY and Mary O'CONNOR, on 11 Dec 1933 in New York. Johanna was born on 10 Jun 1908 in Knocknacurra, Lyreacompane or Upper Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry. She died on 7 Dec 1987 in Rockaway Park, Queens, New York City. She was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, New York City.

We have Joan's place of birth from a newspaper which tells us she was "a native of Knocknacurra, Lyreacompane or Upper Ballymacelligott."

Joan worked in Warrington, Cheshire for a time before emigrating to the United States in the late 1920s. She worked initially for Stern Brothers in New York before joining the staff of R. H. Macy & Co. where she worked for many years until her retirement. According to the 1940 U.S. census, Joan was a sales lady at a department store (this was presumably Macy's). She and her husband, Daniel, were living at the time at 25 Broadway Terrace, New York City.

Joan died at her residence in Rockaway Park. She and Daniel had lived in the Rockaways since the late 1940s.

119. Catherine (Kate) HARRINGTON (Ellen CUNNINGHAM , John , 'unknown' ) was born about 1851 in probably Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Thomas emigrated to the United States, living initially in Rosedale, Kansas before signing up in 1918 with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. His attestation papers gives his occupation as miner.

As children Bryan and his younger brother Garrett, attended an industrial school in Tralee, Co. Kerry. An elder brother, Thomas, probably also went to the same school. Prior to Tralee the boys may have gone to the industrial school in Killarney, Co. Kerry.

Bryan was killed in an accident in a sand pit in Lissahane aged just 16.

Johanna married Patrick CRONIN, son of John CRONIN, on 30 Jul 1895 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. Patrick was born in probably Knockalougha, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died about 1900.
