180. Francis (Frank) THORNTON (James THORNTON , Honora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM , Myles , 'unknown' ) was born 29 Aug 1908 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 30 Aug 1908 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died 21 Oct 1997 in Chicago.

Frank's baptismal sponsors were Francis Thornton and Catherine Brassil.

Frank emigrated to the United States in 1929 and settled in Chicago. In 1939 joined the Chicago Police Department where he served until his retirement in 1965. His career as a police officer was interrupted during World War II when he served with the U.S. Army in Italy and Africa.

A talented flute and tin whistle player, Frank immersed himself in the promotion of Irish music in Chicago, forming the Thornton Drum and Fife Band, giving tin whistle lessons, composing songs and leading several major concert tours to Ireland. He was one of the founders of the United States branch of Comhaltas (Comhaltas is an organisation that promotes traditional Irish music, song, dance and language).

Francis married Margaret (Marge) O'CONNOR in 1942. Margaret was born in Feans, Causeway, Co. Kerry. She died 1980 in Chicago.

Dan started working in the family pub at the age of 15. According to an article on the business in 'The Kerryman' from 1993, the year of Dan's 90th birthday, "At that time, Kearneys was the focal point in Moyvane. Like many pubs at the time in Ireland, it was also a grocery, hardware, drapery, newsagents and supplier of animal feed, milking machines and bucycle repair shop". Dan also worked as an auctioneer.

Daniel married Elizabeth BARRETT. Elizabeth was born in possibly Glin, Co. Limerick. She died 24 Dec 1987 and was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Gale Bridge, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Elizabeth and Dan were shopkeepers in Moyvane.
