10. Mary HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret ) was born about 1841 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died after 2 Apr 1911.

Mary married Michael MCENERY, son of Thomas MCENERY, on 25 Feb 1868 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Michael was born in probably Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died before 30 Mar 1901.

According to the 1911 census, Michael and Mary had 11 children born alive, seven of whom were living at the time of the census.

Note that McEnery is sometimes spelled McEniry.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Edmund Hudson and John Stack.

Michael and Mary had the following children:

  53 i
Thomas MCENERY was born about 18 Dec 1868 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 20 Dec 1868 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Honora's baptism were Jeremiah Hudson and Johanna Hayes.
  61 F ix
Bridget MCENERY was born probably 28 Feb 1881 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

We know from the 1911 census that Bridget was born about 1882. We also know that her parents had a child who was baptised on 28 February 1881 who could be Bridget. Unfortunately the name of the child wasn't recorded (according to the irishgenealogy.ie website) so we cannot say for sure that it was Bridget who was baptised in February 1881.
+ 62 M x Jeremiah MCENERY was born 5 Aug 1883.
  63 xi
William MCENERY was born 8 Jan 1887 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Richard married Margaret THORNTON (caution: not verified), daughter of James (Jim) THORNTON and Honora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM, on 14 Feb 1874 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Margaret was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died after 2 Apr 1911 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

While we're sure Richard's wife's name was Margaret Thornton and that her father was a James Thornton from Kilbaha, we cannot say for certain - although it's very likely - that she was a daughter of Jim Thornton and Norrie Cunningham of Kilbaha, hence the caution.

According to the 1911 census, Richard and Margaret had been married for 36 years and had 17 children born alive, only six of whom were alive in 1911.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were McQuin [first name not recorded] and James Harrington.

Richard and Margaret had the following children:

  64 M i

+ 71 F viii Johanna (Hannie) HUDSON was born 31 Dec 1888 and died 7 Jul 1961.

13. William HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret ) was born about 23 May 1844 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry and was christened 24 May 1844. He died May 1928 in possibly Kilmorna, Co. Kerry and was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at William's baptism were William Connor and John Connnor.

William was a striking-looking man with a long white beard.

William married Johanna HAYES, daughter of 'unknown' HAYES, about 1877. Johanna was born about 1855 in Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. She died 14 Aug 1934 and was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

  72 F i
Mary Ann HUDSON was born about 25 Oct 1878 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 25 Oct 1878 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died after her husband.

Sponsors at Mary Ann's baptism were James Cunningham and Mary Cunningham.

It appears Mary Anne and he husband, John, didn't have any children because, in the early 1920s, Mary Ann gave over her farm at Coilagurteen, Moyvane to her sister Ellen Broderick who looked after her for the rest of her life.

Mary married John DOODY, son of Jeremiah DOODY and Bridget 'UNKNOWN', on 12 Feb 1903 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John was born in possibly Coilagurteen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died date unknown.

John and Mary farmed in Coilagurteen, Moyvane.

Edmond emigrated to Australia around 1870 and settled in Melbourne.

According to a couple of sources, Edmond was murdered, but it's believed by most family members that this isn't true at all.

Edmond married Anne O'CONNOR. Anne was born in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died 4 Jul 1878 in Australia.

They had the following children:

+ 83 M i James Edward HUDSON was born 10 Aug 1876 and died 17 Mar 1943.

She died 14 May 1910 in possibly Ballymacjordan, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick and was buried in Abbeyfeale Old Churchyard, Co. Limerick.

The sponsor at Margaret's baptism was Mary Collins.

Margaret married John MOLONEY, son of John MOLONEY and Margaret O'BRIEN, on 15 Feb 1875 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. John was born about 1848 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. Nora COLLINS was born in Australia.

Nora married Patrick SHEEHAN in Dec 1913. Patrick was born about 1887. He died 1934.

Patrick was only 47 when he died.

20. Johanna HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret ) was born about 1860 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died 1 Mar 1932 in Athea, Co. Limerick.

I had originally been told by a family source that it was Johanna's sister Honora who married Thomas Hayes was married but this appears to be incorrect as Thomas's marriage record shows that he married a Jahanna Hudson and census records show Thomas's wife's name to have been Johanna. However Honora's sister Johanna (born around 1857) appears to have died as a child. Either this is incorrect or another daughter named Johanna was born after the death of the first Johanna.

Johanna married Thomas HAYES, son of Michael HAYES, on 22 Feb 1881 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Thomas was born about 1854 in possibly Templeathea, Co. Limerick.

The 1911 census tells us that Thomas and Johanna had been married for 30 years and had 10 children born alive, seven of whom were still alive at the time of the census.

A Daniel Hayes of Templeathea, who died on 3 April 1973 aged 80, is buried in Templeathea Churchyard. Could Daniel have been a son of Thomas and Johanna? Daniel's wife, Mary (Molly), who died on 20 January 1989 aged 98, is buried with him.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Michael Hayes and William Hudson.

Thomas and Johanna had the following children:

According to the 1870 census, Richard was an apprentice to a cooper. He later worked as a park guard in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. He died of TB aged only about 40.

Richard married Julia Christina DREHER. Julia was born 14 Apr 1859. She died 11 Jan 1946 in Philadelphia and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Philadelphia.

Julia was of Pennsylvania Dutch extraction. She became a Catholic when she married. Julia oulived her husband by more than fifty years, having become a widow in her early thirties. She never remarried.

They had the following children:

+ 111 M iii William Francis HUDSON was born Mar 1887 and died 25 May 1963.
  112 M iv
Richard Dennis HUDSON was born May 1892 in Philadelphia. He died 1947 in Philadelphia.

Ricard, who died of cancer, never married.

26. John CUNNINGHAM (Johanna HUDSON , Margaret ) was born about 1851 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

The information below on John's family may be incorrect: I was given detailed information on John and his family by a very reliable family source but when I came across their details in the 1901 census, I saw that John's mother is listed as Margaret (rather than Johanna, who had died in 1897). Furthermore John's county of birth is given as Limerick in the census whereas our John was born in Kerry. Therefore either the family listed below is not that of our John or errors were made in filling out the census form (Margaret may have been John's mother-in-law, for example). Any assistance in establishing the correct names of John's family members would be much appreciated. If you can help, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com. Thank you. For now I have added cautions to the names of John's wife and children.

John married Honora (Nora) CREGAN (caution: not verified) about 1891. Honora was born about 1859 in Co. Kerry.

John and Nora farmed at Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick.

According to the 1911 census, John and Nora had been married for 20 years and had eight children born alive, seven of whom were alive at time of the census. All seven are listed but they don't include Johanna who I'm told by a family source emigrated to the United States. John and Nora definitely had a daughter named Johanna, born in 1897, so it's possible she died as a child. However John and Nora had another child (John, born in 1893) who appears to have died before the 1911 census, which doesn't tie in with their declaration that only one child was not alive at the time of the census.

They had the following children:

  113 M i
Bryan CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 2 Nov 1891 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died in probably U.S..

Bryan emigrated to the United States.
  114 M ii
John CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 3 Apr 1893 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died before 10 Feb 1899 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John died as a child.
  115 F iii
Margaret CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 1893 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died in probably U.S..

Margaret emigrated to the United States.
  116 M iv
Denis CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 25 Jun 1894 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died in probably U.S..

Denis emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 4 March 1921. His contact in New York was his brother John who had emigrated the year before and who lived at 2437 8th Avenue.
  117 M v
Richard CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 20 Dec 1895 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died in probably U.S..

Richard emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 3 April 1923. Acording to the ship manifest his contact in New York was his brother John who had emigrated three years earlier and who lived at 2437 8th Avenue.
  118 F vi
Johanna CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 7 Sep 1897 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died probably bef 2 Apr 1911.

Johanna must have died as a child as, accordong to the 1911 census, her parents had eight children born alive, seven of whom were still alive at the time of the census; the list of seven children named in the census return does not include Johanna.
  119 F vii
John CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 10 Feb 1899 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died after 1998 in U.S..

John emigrated to the United States at the age of 21, arriving in New York on 11 June 1920. His contact in New York was a cousin, Denis Cregan, who lived in Long Island City. It appears John may have been the first of seven siblings to emigrate (only one remained in Ireland).
  120 F viii
Catherine CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 23 Jan 1901 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died in Glin, Co. Limerick.

Catherine was the only member of the family who didn't emigrate. She never married.
  121 M ix
Patrick (Paddy) CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born 1 Nov 1904 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died 4 Jun 1972 in Glin, Co. Limerick and was buried in Kilfergus Cemetery, Glin, Co. Limerick.

Paddy emigrated to the United States and retired to Glin where he died. He never married.

27. Richard (Richie) CUNNINGHAM (Johanna HUDSON , Margaret ) was born about 2 Jun 1852 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 4 Jun 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died 24 Dec 1926.

The sponsor at Richie's baptism was Daniel Kearney.

Richie was also known as 'Richie Bryan'. He and his wife, Brigie, lived in Kilbaha.

The writer of a handwritten family tree on the 'Moyvane and District' page of Jer Kennelly's online album collection (see Links page on this website) tells us that "A son of this marriage [i.e., the marriage of Richie and Brigie], Myles or Sean Cunningham, settled in Killeedy, Co. Limerick and on 19th Jan. 1851 married Eliz. Dore of [what looks like] Dorriry whose grandfather, Maurice Dower, had come down to Killeedy from Gortnagloss about the same time as James Dower moved to Newtownsandes. Maurice and James may have been brothers". However, because Richie and Brigie married in 1892, no son of that marriage could have married in 1851 and because Elizabeth Dore's husband was Oliver Cunningham, it's possible Richie had a relative named Oliver Cunningham. Unfortunately I have been unsuccessful in finding out any other information on Oliver.

Richard married Brigid (Brigie) DORE, daughter of John DORE and Honora (Nora) LYNDON, on 27 Feb 1892 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Brigid was born about 17 Dec 1857 in Moyvane South (Shronagraga), Co. Kerry and was christened 19 Dec 1857 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died 1916.

They had the following children:

+ 122 F i Mary (Molly) CUNNINGHAM was born 10 Mar 1893 and died 22 Jul 1976.
+ 123 M ii Bryan (Brianeen) CUNNINGHAM was born 10 Sep 1894 and died 21 Dec 1966.
  124 F iii
Johanna (Sr. Mary Ellen) CUNNINGHAM was born 25 Nov 1895 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 27 Nov 1895 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died 13 Aug 1989 in Concordia, Kansas.

Johanna's baptismal sponsors were Michael Stack and Mary Dore.

Johanna was also known as Hannie. She and her sister, Maggie, left Ireland in 1915 to join the Sisters of St. Joseph at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, Kansas.

Ellis Island records (on www.ellisisland.org) show that the sisters arrived in New York on 12 September 1915 and were joining a "cousin", Bishop John Francis Cunningham, of Concordia, Kansas. It's not known how they may have been related to the bishop, who was born on 21 September 1842 in either Irremore or the neighboring townland of Mountcoal, both located near Listowel, to John Cunningham and Catherine Fitzgerald. The family emigrated to the United States when John was 12 years of age following their eviction from their farm in Mountcoal. John was ordained a priest in Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1865 and became bishop of Concordia in 1898 He died on 23 June 1919. According to an article in the Kerryman newspaper of 23 September 1961 on the dedication of the new Church of Our Lady of Fatima and St. Senan in Irremore, a Rev. P.J. Cronin, a grandnephew of the bishop's, donated a Rosary window to the new church in memory of his granduncle. Although Sr. Mary Ellen had second cousins who were Cronins (through the marriage of her great-aunt Johanna to Tom Cronin), I have unable to figure out how, if at all, Rev. Cronin might have been related to Sr. Mary Ellen. However if Rev. Cronin were one of Sr. Mary Ellen's second cousins, it would appear he was more distantly related to the bishop than a grandnephew.

Getting back to Sr. Mary Ellen, she was a nursing sister and worked in El Paso, Texas for a time before returning to Kansas to work in St. Anthony's Hospital in Concordia.
+ 125 F iv Hanora (Nora) CUNNINGHAM was born 6 Dec 1896 and died 19 Feb 1988.
  126 F v
Margaret (Sr. Mary Estelle) CUNNINGHAM was born 17 Apr 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 18 Apr 1898 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died 3 Oct 1987 in Concordia, Kansas.

Margaret's baptismal sponsors were not recorded on the parish register.

Margaret was also known as Maggie. She and her sister, Hannie, left Ireland in 1915 to join the Sisters of St. Joseph at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, Kansas.

Sr. Mary Estelle, who was a nursing sister, worked for more than 30 years in St. Joseph's Hospital in Belvidere, Illinois. In 1973, due to frail health, she returned to Concordia where she continued to help with nursing duties.
  127 M vi
Thomas CUNNINGHAM was born 17 Apr 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 18 Apr 1898 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Thomas's baptismal sponsors were not recorded on the parish register.

It appears Thomas may have died very young as we have no account of his life beyond his baptism.
  128 F vii
Ellen CUNNINGHAM was born 17 Apr 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died 17 Apr 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ellen died at birth. The date of birth I have been given for her by a family source is the same date of birth given on the baptismal records of two of her siblings. Could she have been a triplet?
  129 F viii
Eileen CUNNINGHAM was born 13 Aug 1899 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died 19 Jan 1988 in Askeaton, Co. Limerick and was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Gale Bridge, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Eileen is listed (as Ellie) in the 1911 census return for the household of her aunt Manie Dore in Moyvane South. In 1928 Eileen emigrated to the United States and settled in New York. She never married, and retired to Listowel where she lived with her sister Bridie.

+ 130 M ix John (Jack) CUNNINGHAM was born 1 Jul 1901 and died 7 Nov 1995.
  131 F x
Bridget (Bridie) CUNNINGHAM was born 7 Apr 1904 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 9 Apr 1904 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died 24 Nov 1982 in Listowel, Co. Kerry and was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Gale Bridge, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Bridie's baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Kennelly and Elizabeth Kennelly.

Bridie was a nurse in London and later in Listowel District Hospital. In Listowel she spent many years working on night duty - she would do three months of 12-hour shifts, getting only a one or two day break before the next three-month cycle would start. Bridie lived on Court House Road in Listowel.

28. Johanna CUNNINGHAM (Johanna HUDSON , Margaret ) was born about 17 Jun 1854 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 19 Jun 1854 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died 12 Dec 1927 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

The sponsor at Johanna's baptism was Edmund Hudson.

Johanna married William O'CONNOR, son of Patrick O'CONNOR / CONNORS and Mary DALTON (caution: not verified), on 12 Feb 1871 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane). William was born probably Oct 1835 in probably Dirreen Lower, Athea, Co. Limerick and was christened probably 19 Oct 1835 in probably Athea, Co. Limerick. He died Apr 1920 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at William's baptism were Daniel Mullane and Johanna Casey.

William farmed in Kilbaha North.

In the 1901 census there's a return for the household of Kate O'Connor, also of Kilbaha North. She's the only one listed for the household, and her occupation is "agricultural labourer". The writing on the census is too faint to make out her age. She's not listed in the Kilbaha returns in 1911. If she wasn't related to our O'Connor family perhaps she was connected to Patrick O'Connor who moved to Kilbaha from Shronebeirne, Duagh in the mid-19th century (see notes for Patrick O'Connor, father of William above).

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Michael Hanrahan and Daniel Connell.

William and Johanna had the following children:

Patrick (Paddy Otter) O'CONNOR was born 20 Nov 1871 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 23 Nov 1871 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died 9 Nov 1963 in Beenbrack, Lisaniskea, Knockanure, Co. Kerry and was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Paddy's baptism were Edmund Cunningham and Honoria Cunningham.

Paddy was known as "Otter" because he had a passion for fishing. He lived into his early 90s and was still cycling up to shortly before his death.

Patrick married Hannah AHERN. Hannah was born in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in probably Beenbrack or Lisaniskea, Knockanure, Co. Kerry and was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Paddy and Hannah lived in Beenbrack in Lisaniskea, Knockanure. They had no children. The farm passed to a relative of Hannah's (perhaps a niece?) named Margaret Ahern who was married to a Joe Collins.

Bryan O'CONNOR was born 5 Dec 1872 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 7 Dec 1872 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died probably young.

Bryan's baptismal sponsors were Richard Cunningham and Margaret Cunningham.

There doesn't seem to be any recollection of Bryan as an adult. It's probable he died young.

Michael O'CONNOR was born 2 Jun 1880 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 5 Jun 1880 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died 3 Mar 1912 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

According to Michael's death certificate, he was aged 24 when he died in 1912, which would mean he was born in 1887 or 1888 rather than 1880. His headstone gives his age at death as 27, which would mean he was born in 1884 or 1885. Michael's baptismal record, showing his year of birth to be 1880, is the most dependable indication of date of birth (even moreso than birt certificates as births were often registered many months after the event whereas baptisms in Ireland at that time typically took place a day or two after the birth).

Michael died around the age of 30. I had been told by a family source that he died of a perforated appendix. However, according to his death certificate, he died from pneumonia.

30. Edward CUNNINGHAM (Johanna HUDSON , Margaret ) was born about 15 Nov 1856 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 17 Nov 1856 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died 11 Jan 1924 in Chicago.

Sponsors at Edward's baptism were Richard Hudson and Ellen Relihan.

Edward was educated at St. Michael's College in Listowel. He emigrated to the United States around 1896 and settled in Chicago.

Edward married 'UNKNOWN'.

They had the following children:

+ 138 M i Bernard CUNNINGHAM was born about 1903 and died date unknown.
