Descendants of John GORDON

Third Generation

4. Patrick GORDON (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 1807 in prob Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died in prob. Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

Patrick Gordon farmed in Curreentorpan in Fairymount.

The year of Patrick's birth provided by the family (1817) doesn't fit in with the date of baptism of his sister, Bridget (12 July 1817), as provided by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company. It also doesn't fit in with the births of his children as it's unlikely he was in his late teens when he had his first children. It's more likely therefore that he was born perhaps five to 10 years earlier.

Patrick married Mary FRENCH on 4 Feb 1833 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Mary was born about 1805 in Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. She died 1900 in prob. Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

According to family sources, Mary was born in 1805, but this seems unlikely given that that she was still having children in the late 1850s. It's probable therefore that she was born perhaps 10 years later. However this doesn't tie in with family information that Mary was older than her husband.

Family notes state that Patrick and Mary were married in 1844. The Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company have records showing that a Patrick Gordon and a Mary French were married in Fairymount on 4 February 1833, which is more likely given the years of birth of their children.

Witnesses to the marriage of Mary and Patrick were Martin Gordon (Patrick's brother?) and Michael Dowd.

The christening dates given blow for nine of the children of Mary and Patrick come from the LDS Vital Records Index. These christenings were recorded in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

They had the following children:

  12 M i
Robert GORDON was born about 1 Jan 1834 and was christened 1 Jan 1834 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died in prob Australia.

Robert emigrated to Australia, possibly with his cousin, Michael John Gordon.
  13 M ii
James GORDON was born about 28 Jul 1835 and was christened 28 Jul 1835 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died poss. bef. 1855.

Because another James was born to Patrick and Mary around 1855, it's being presumed that this James died before then.
  14 F iii
Anne GORDON was born about 23 Nov 1836 and was christened 23 Nov 1836 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. She died poss. bef. 1850.

A second Anne was born to Patrick and Mary in 1850 so it seems likely that this Anne died before then.
+ 15 M iv John GORDON was born about 15 Jun 1838.
  16 M v
Thomas GORDON was born about 17 Oct 1839 and was christened 17 Oct 1839 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died poss. bef. 1853.

A second Thomas was born to Patrick and Mary in 1853 so it seems likely that this Thomas died before then.
  17 F vi
Eliza GORDON was born about 1841. She died in poss. Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon.

Eliza married James BYRNE / BEIRNE, son of Patrick BYRNE / BEIRNE, on 28 Jan 1864 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. James was born about 1835.

  23 F xii

Marie married 'unknown' COYNE. 'unknown' died in prob. Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.
+ 24 F xiii Ellen or Eleanor GORDON was born about 10 Apr 1857 and died Bet. 1886 and 1897.
+ 25 M xiv Francis (Frank) GORDON was born about 31 Jul 1859.

5. Bridget GORDON (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 12 Jul 1817 in prob Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

There's a baptism record for a Bridget Gordon with the following details:
Date of baptism: 12 Jul 1817
Place of baptism: Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon
   Father: Cormac Gordon
   Mother: Anne Hunt
But the date of baptism differs from the year of birth provided by the family, which is "about 1830".
Sponsors at the 1817 baptism were Martin Gordon and Elizabeth Hunt.

Bridget married Tim MORRIS. Tim was born in Clerragh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon?. He died prob. bef. 1902.

The children born to Bridget and Tim, as listed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company, shows a gap of about 12 years where there were no children born to the couple. This would need to be checked out.

They had the following children:

+ 26 M i Michael MORRIS was born about 4 Nov 1836.
  27 F ii
Bridget MORRIS was born about 30 Jan 1838 and was christened 30 Jan 1838 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

  34 M ix
Francis MORRIS was born about 15 Jun 1861 and was christened 15 Jun 1861 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

6. Michael GORDON (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born 1818 in prob Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died in prob. Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon.

According to information from the family, Michael married a "Miss Finn" from Fairymount and they ran a farm in Aughalustia, Ballaghaderreen; they had three sons and four daughters, including Pat, Tom, Michael and Dora.

Based on this information, the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company came up with the following:

Miss Finn's first name was Anne, and records were found for four children born to Michael Gordon and Anne Finn - Thomas, Michael, Honoria and Ellen, which ties in with the family information.

Unfortunately the fourth daughter's name is not known. An Anne Gordon from Aughalustia, daughter of a Michael Gordon, married a Dominick Bligh from Castlerea in 1876 in Ballaghaderreen. According to Cormac Gordon, son of Cormac Gordon and Mary Morahan, the Blighs were somehow connected to the Gordons, so it's possible that Anne may have been a daughter of Michael Gordon and Anne Finn.

Update (12 January 2005): I have just received evidence of the existence of another daughter, Bridget, and I have added her name and details to the list below.

Notes:

1. On the birth or baptism record found by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company for Ellen Gordon, daughter of Michael and Anne, Ellen's mother's name was transcribed as Anne "Ferin" which, given the style of writing at the time, the head genealogist from the above company believes that it was actually "Finn".

2. There's a 1901 census record for England that gives details of a Patrick Gordon, a 22-year-old farm labourer who was born in Aughalustia. It's possible he's connected to the family of Michael above but I haven't been able to establish an exact relationship. The Patrick Gordon from the census was living in what looks like the village or hamlet of Woodham in the parish of Yoxall in Staffordshire.

3. A baptismal record has been located for a Cormac Gordon, son of Michael and Mary Gordon (Mary's maiden name is not given) who was baptised on 20 July 1852 in Ballaghaderreen. The sponsor was Michael Finn. Given the father's and  sponsor's names, there may be a connection between Cormac and our Michael above.

Michael married Anne FINN. Anne was born in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in prob. Aughulastia, Co. Roscommon.

They had the following children:

  35 M i
Thomas (Tom) GORDON was born about 31 Jul 1839 in prob. Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon and was christened 31 Jul 1839 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

The year of baptism as transcribed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Society (1839) doesn't fit in with the dates of baptism as transcribed for some other members of the family (1860-1867). The actual baptismal certificate would need to be checked.

There's a 1901 census record for the household of a Thomas Gordon of Aughalustia, which MAY relate to our Thomas above. Details of the return are as follows:

Thomas (aged 55)
Bridget (wife, aged 53)
Maggie (daughter, 19)
Bridget (daughter, 15)
Martin (son, 12)
  36 M ii
Patrick (Pat) GORDON was born in prob. Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon.

There's a 1901 census record for the household of a Patrick Gordon of Aughalustia, which MAY relate to our Patrick above. Details of the return are as follows:

Patrick (aged 49)
Bridget (wife, aged 38)
Annie (daughter, 6)
+ 37 F iii Bridget GORDON was born about 1849 and died about 1906.
  38 M iv
Michael GORDON was born about 23 Dec 1860 in prob. Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon and was christened 23 Dec 1860 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Michael's baptism were Patrick Gordon and Bridget Gordon.
+ 39 F v Anne? GORDON (Caution: name, husband and children not verified) was born about 1861 and died poss. 12 Feb 1937.
  40 F vi
Dora GORDON was born in prob. Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon.
+ 41 F vii Honoria GORDON was born about 3 Nov 1865.
+ 42 F viii Ellen GORDON was born Nov 1867.

7. Martin GORDON (Caution: wife and some children not verified) (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born in prob Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died in prob. Clerragh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

The only information the family has for Martin is that he lived in Clerragh in Fairymount and that he was married (wife's name unknown) and had two sons (Barney and Martin) and one daughter named Maria.

The Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company came up with more information for a Martin Gordon which would seem to tie in with our Martin Gordon for the following reasons:

1. Although the genealogy company's Martin had four sons, two were named Bernard (Barney?) and Martin.

2. The genealogy company's Martin had one daughter (named  Mary) as did ours (Maria).

3. There's the Clerragh connection: our Martin farmed in Clerragh and according to information from the 1901 census returns and from the genealogy company, Martin, son of their Martin, farmed in Clerragh.

For the above reasons the family of Martin Gordon and Bridget Finn, as detailed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company, is being included in the family tree. But further checking would need to be carried out.

Martin married Bridget FINN (not verified) on 10 Feb 1836 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. Bridget died 21 Dec 1900.

They had the following children:

+ 43 M i Michael GORDON (not verified) was born about 5 Jul 1838.
  44 F ii

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were Robert Walsh and Anne Hunt.

A marriage record was located in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) for a Mary Gordon, daughter of Martin Gordon, who married Denis Donlon in Loughglynn on 24 January 1864. Could this relate to our Mary above?
+ 45 M iii Charles GORDON (not verified) died poss. bef. 1902.
+ 46 M iv Martin GORDON was born about 1850.
+ 47 M v Bernard (Barney) GORDON was born about 1850.

9. Thomas GORDON (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born 1821 in prob Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon and was christened 15 Nov 1821 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died 23 Mar 1901 in prob Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Thomas's baptism were Patrick Gordon and Mary Hunt.

Thomas married Anne FOLEY, daughter of Michael? FOLEY, about 1857. Anne was born 1839 in Breanamore, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. She died 26 Feb 1885 in prob Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

It's believed Anne was an only daughter. She was possibly an only child because her father left the family farm to Anne and her husband, Thomas. However as a result of a government act of the time, the farm was distributed amongst others.

They had the following children:

+ 48 F i Kathleen J. GORDON was born 15 Apr 1858 and died 26 Feb 1927.
+ 49 F ii Bridget (Bea) GORDON was born 7 Jun 1859 and died 5 Sep 1949.

  58 F xi
Martha GORDON was born 1875 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died 1877.

According to records as transcribed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company, a Martina Gordon (born to Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley) was baptised on 18 February 1877 in Fairymount; a Thomas Gordon (also born to Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley), born 12 February 1877, was baptised on 7 (sic) February 1877 in Fairymount. Was there a transcription error? Or were Martina/Martha and Thomas twins? Or is the information provided by the family correct, i.e., Martha was born in 1875 and Thomas was born in 1877?
+ 59 M xii Thomas (Tom) GORDON was born 19 Jan 1877 and died 1946.

11. Catherine GORDON (Caution: some children not verified) (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 1825 in prob Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in prob Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Catherine married John FLANNERY. John died before 1902 in prob Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

John ran "Flannery's", a well-known shop in Ballaghadereen.

It's being presumed that John died prior to the 1901 census because Catherine Gordon is listed as the head of the household.

They had the following children:

+ 64 M i 'unknown' FLANNERY (male).
  65 F ii
'unknown' FLANNERY (female) was born in prob Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Thomas FLANNERY (Caution: not verified) was born about 1860 in prob Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

It's pure speculation that Thomas was one of the four sons of Catherine and John. According to the 1901 census, Thomas lived in the town of Ballaghaderreen and was a publican. For this reason, it's being assumed he was a member of the Flannery family that owned the big shop and pub in Ballaghaderreen.
+ 72 M ix Bernard FLANNERY (Caution: not verified) was born about 1862.
  73 M x
James FLANNERY (Caution: not verified) was born about 1862 in prob Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Because of this it's being assumed he was a member of the Flannery family that owned the big shop and pub in Ballaghaderreen. His age is given as 38, the same age as Bernard; were they twins?
