Michael Kennelly was born in 1914 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry to Tim Kennelly and Mary Jane Hanrahan. Mary was a daughter of John “The Major” Hanrahan (see earlier photo) who was a son of Michael Hanrahan and Peg Cunningham.

In 1929, at the age of 14, Michael went to the United States. He lived with his uncle Jim Kennelly while attending Regis High School in Manhattan in preparation for joining the Jesuit order. Following further study and teaching work in Alabama, Louisiana, Florida and Kansas, Michael was ordained in Kansas in 1946. He worked in Jesuit high schools in Louisiana and Florida before moving to Houston, Texas where he served as president of Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School. In 1970 he was appointed president of Loyola University in New Orleans, a position he held for four years.

Returning to Florida Michael served at Gesu Church in Miami and Sacred Heart Church in Tampa before being appointed rector and vice-president of Jesuit High School in Tampa, where he had worked many years earlier. Between 1997 and 2001 Michael served as pastor emeritus and parochial vicar at Sacred Heart Church in Tampa before retiring at the age of about 87. Michael died, aged 96, in 2011 at Ignatius Residence, a community of retired Jesuit priests and brothers in New Orleans.
