CUNNINGHAM Fr Tim Hanrahan


Tim Hanrahan, who was born in 1895 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry, was one of the nine children of John Hanrahan and Margaret Cunningham. Both of his parents died within a week of each other in the ‘flu epidemic of 1918.

Tim became a priest and was sent to the United States in 1918 where he served in a number of parishes in the Harrisburg area of Pennsylvania. He had been pastor in the parish of Bonneauville for four years when he was killed in a car crash in 1935 aged only 41. He and three other priests were on their way to the consecration in Phildaelphia of Fr. L. Leech as bishop of Harrisburg when the accident occurred.

Tim’s youngest sister, Nellie (see next photo), also lived in Harrisburg. Of his other siblings, Molly married Mossie Walsh and lived in Leitrim East, Moyvane; Gretta married Patrick Culhane and lived in Kinard, Glin, Co. Limerick; Hannie married Ned Hudson and remained in Kilbaha; Mick also stayed in Kilbaha where he ran the family farm; Bryan married Mary McCoy of Athea, Co. Limerick; Katie married Michael Mulvihill and lived in Coolaclarig, Listowel, Co. Kerry; and John died as a child.
