This photo was taken about 1904 and shows William J. O'Hara with his first child, Elizabeth. William was born in 1873 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon to Roger (Rossy) O'Hara and Elizabeth Lavin. At the age of 24 he emigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia. William married Pennsylvania-born Susan McMenamin in 1903 and they had six daughters and three sons. Elizabeth entered the convent, taking the name Sr. Regina Josephine.
William was successful saloon owner in Philadelphia. Even during Prohibition (1920-1933) William continued in business by making his own liquor in the basement of his home which would then be secretly transported - by his daughters - to the saloon a few blocks away.
