William J. O'Hara, pictured here with his wife and four of their children, was born in 1873 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon to Roger (Rossy) O'Hara and Elizabeth Lavin. At the age of 24 he emigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia where he became a successful saloon owner. Even during Prohibition (1920-1933) William continued in business by making his own liquor in the basement of his home which would then be secretly transported - by his daughters - to the saloon a few blocks away.
William married Pennsylvania-born Susan McMenamin in 1903 and they had six daughters and two sons. This photo was probably taken in Wildwood, New Jersey where the family used to spend their summers.
William was a first cousin of Jane Lavin, Mud O'Hara and Elizabeth Jeffares (see earlier photos).
