Included in this photo are Fr. John Doody and his sister Mary, who was known as Girlie. The occasion was the wedding (probably in the late 1930s) of Jerry Hedigan and their cousin Mary Roche (Fr. John and Girlie’s maternal grandmother was a member of the Roche family).
Pictured from left to right are: Back row: Jim Roche, Michael Tierney, Nell O'Donnell (née Roche), Fr. John, Maurice Roche, Girlie, Sean Fitzgerald (of Galbally, Co. Limerick) and Garrett Roche. Front row: John Hedigan, Katie Hedigan (née Fahey, stepmother of the groom), Jerry Hedigan, Mary Roche (sister of the Roches behind), Matthew Hedigan and Bridget Young (née Roche).
Fr. John was born in 1900 and Girlie in 1904. Their parents were Mike Doody from Ardnamoher, Galbally, Co. Limerick and Mary Ann Leonard from Kilworth, Co. Cork. After their marriage Mike and Mary Ann lived in Cork city, first on Lavitts Quay and later on Belgrave Terrace, off Wellington Road. Mike worked in the saddlery business.
Girlie, who never married, lived in Cork, while Fr. John became a parish priest, serving at Ss. Peter & Paul in Cork and later in Schull and Kilbrittain, Co. Cork. Girlie and Fr. John had three brothers, Jim, Tom and Paddy, all of whom lived in England, although Tom returned to Co. Cork after several years in London.
