Doody Photos

Julia Sullivan (née Doody) was born in 1858, one of the 12 children of Michael Doody and Johanna Quirke of Ardnamoher, Galbally, Co. Limerick. In 1881 she married Jim Sullivan of Mourneabbey, Co. Cork. Her sister Mary had married Jim’s brother Dan a year earlier, and both sisters settled in Mourneabbey where Julia and Jim raised 10 children.

Julia and her family experienced much hardship, which included eviction in the mid-1880s (they were given shelter by Dan and Mary), the death of their young son Daniel, and Jim’s death in about 1902 when their youngest child was only about a year old.

Three other children predeceased Julia, who died in 1933 aged 75: Mary Ann (Sr. Mary Munchin), Madge (Lynch) and Julia. Of their other children, Jimmy and Jack both became railway employees, Jimmy settling in Waterford and Jack living in Cork and later Athlone, Co. Westmeath. Eugene emigrated to Australia, Denis married locally, Hannah (Williams) settled in Plymouth, England and Ellen (Treacy) lived in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary.
