Valentine (known as Val) Hussey was born in 1909 in South Kensington in London, the only child of William Hussey and Kitty Rooney. He is pictured here in 1914, aged about five, with his maternal uncle Bruno Rooney. In June 1915, a year after this photo was taken, Bruno was killed at Gallipoli.

Twenty eight years later, in July 1943, Val, who was a captain in the Royal Artillery, was killed during the Allied Invasion of Sicily. He was 33 years old. He is buried in Syracuse War Cemetery in Sicily.

Val was a nephew of Thomas, James and Harry Hussey and a first cousin of Bob, Ted, Laurie, Michael, Philip and Stephen Hussey (see earlier photos).
