Hussey Photos

Hammersmith-born Stephen Hussey and Carlow-born Mary Ryan met in London where Mary was working. Stephen and Mary married in 1922 in Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow and lived most of their married life in Barnes in London. They had four daughters.

Stephen, who was a builder, was born in 1895 to James Hussey and Jane Butler, both of whom had Irish backgrounds. His great-grandfather William Hussey had emigrated from Co. Kerry and joined the Metropolitan Police in 1931. Stephen's grandfather Thomas Hussey was a well-known builder in the Kensington area of London and most of his sons followed their father into the trade. Stephen's father James however became a solicitor.

Stephen was a nephew of Harry Hussey, a brother of Philip Hussey and a (double) first cousin of Robert and Laurence Hussey (see previous photos). Stephen too saw service in World War I and was awarded the Military Medal for carrying a wounded man to safety under gunfire.
