UK version of ancestry.com with access to British census data (1841 to 1901) and more. Message Board.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

Online access to register of members of Commonwealth forces killed in the two world wars.

Ellis Island Foundation

Online access to Ellis Island passenger records (1892 to 1924).

ENVision

Interactive map search facility from Ireland’s Environmental Protection Agency. Select by townland to see GIS picture of that townland, and zoom out to see ordnance survey map.  

FamilySearch

Searchable genealogical collections of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

FreeBMD

Online access to transcribed civil registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales. Period covered is 1837-1983.

General Register Office of Ireland

Information on how to apply for copies of civil birth, marriage and death certificates in Ireland (records relating to Catholics date from 1864). No online access to records. Apply to local county GRO offices which respond much more quickly than head office in Dublin (click on Fees for details). However some local offices don’t accept credit card payments.

Information on descendants of Michael Hanrahan and Margaret Cunningham (born around 1830s) from Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

IreAtlas Townland Database

Access to database of all Irish townlands, towns and parishes as used for the 1851 census of Ireland. Very useful for deciphering placenames on birth, marriage and death certificates.

Irish Family History Foundation

Instructions on how to commission family history searches from county-based heritage centres which have access to census returns, parish records, etc. Online access to church records for some counties (but very expensive).

Irish Origins

Online access to Irish genealogical information. Very useful for Griffiths Valuation data (1848 to 1864).

Irish Times Genealogy Service

Information on surnames, placenames, parishes, where to find genealogy records, etc. Commission service.

Leitrim-Roscommon.com

Wide-ranging information on Leitrim and Roscommon genealogy. Online access to voluntarily-transcribed 1901 census data, Griffiths Valuation information and much more. Bulletin Board. Some census data for other counties too.

Moyvane.com

History, photos, up-to-date news and other information relating to parish of Moyvane (formerly Newtownsandes), Co. Kerry. Guestbook useful for making enquiries.

National Archives of Ireland

Information on Ireland’s national archive repository which holds census data (1901 and 1911), Tithe Applotment Books (1823 to 1838) and Griffiths Valuation records (1848 to 1864). Online access to 1911 census records now available for Dublin, with other counties to follow.

National Library of Ireland

Information on Ireland’s national research library which holds copies of registers of most Catholic parishes up to about 1880. No online access to records. Helpful section on getting stared on your Irish genealogical research (click on Family Tree Research).
