Commonwealth War Graves Commission

Register of members of Commonwealth forces killed in the two world wars. Free of charge.

Ellis Island Foundation

Ellis Island passenger records (1892 to 1924). No charge.

FamilySearch - Civil Registration Indexes

Irish civil registration indexes from 1864 to 1958, plus non-Catholic marriage indexes from 1845,  from FamilySearch website of  the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Database still under development. No charge.

FamilySearch - IGI

International Genealogical Index of births, marriage and deaths from FamilySearch website. Searchable by county. If searching for Irish records, select British Isles from the Region options and then select Ireland. No charge.

FreeBMD

Transcribed civil registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales from 1837 to 1983 (all records may not yet be transcribed). No charge.

General Register Office of Ireland

Information on how to apply for copies of civil birth, marriage and death certificates in Ireland (records relating to Catholics date from 1864). No online access to records. Apply to local county GRO offices which respond much more quickly than head office in Dublin (click on Fees for details). However some local offices don’t accept credit card payments.

IreAtlas Townland Database

Database of all Irish townlands, towns and parishes as used for the 1851 census of Ireland. Very useful for deciphering placenames on birth, marriage and death certificates.

Irish Ancestors

Irish Times genealogy service providing information on surnames, placenames, parishes, genealogy record repositories, etc. Commission service available.

Irish Genealogy

Irish church records from website provided by Irish government. Records currently available for counties Dublin and Kerry only, with those for Carlow and part of Cork to follow.

Irish Family History Foundation

Instructions on how to commission family history searches from county-based heritage centres which have access to census returns, parish records, etc. Some centres provide online access to church and census records.

Irish Newspaper Archives

Archived items from Irish Independent and selection of provincial newspapers.

Jer’s Album Collection

Jer Kennelly’s online albums containing old photos of people from Moyvane (Newtownsandes), Co. Kerry and neighbouring parishes in counties Kerry and Limerick, including photos of memoriam cards. Gravestone photos also.

Leitrim-Roscommon

National Archives of Ireland

Information on Ireland’s national archive repository which holds census data (1901 and 1911), Tithe Applotment Books (1823 to 1838) and Griffiths Valuation records (1848 to 1864). Free online access to 1911 census records for all counties. 1901 data to follow very shortly.

National Library of Ireland

Information on Ireland’s national research library which holds copies of registers of most Catholic parishes up to about 1880. No online access to records. Helpful section on getting stared on your Irish genealogical research (click on Services and then on Family History).

Newtownsandes

Information on people and history of Newtownsandes (now Moyvane) and surrounding parishes in Co. Kerry.

Sheehan Family Tree

Brian and Kieran Sheehan’s website containing information on their Finucane and O’Connor ancestors from north Kerry and their Sheehan, Kavanagh and Byrne ancestors from Co. Wicklow.
