Sponsors at Rossy's baptism were Roger O'Hara and Maria Moran.

It appears from the 1901 census return for the household of a Roger O'Hara (aged 57) with a wife named Eliza (55) that our Roger, above,  was a farmer in the townland of Cloongreaghan in Cootehall.

Roger married Elizabeth LAVIN, daughter of Luke LAVIN and Brigid STAPLETON, on 29 Jun 1868 in Kilmore Chapel, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. Elizabeth was born 1846 in Ardgallagher, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. She died 15 Nov 1919 in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Elizabeth was a sister of Patrick Lavin of Ardgallagher, Kilmore who married Rossy's niece Jane O'Hara.

Elizabeth's obituary in The Roscommon Herald of 29 November 1919 gives us some information on the spouses and children of her daughters, Ann, Elizabeth and two more daughters whose first names are unknown. Unfortunately we don't know which spouse relates to which daughter. Here is an extract:

"Chief mourners: .....Mrs. John McGrath (Elphin), Mrs. Chris Bury and Mrs. Patrick Flynn, Cootehall (daughters): Mr. John McGrath, Mr. T. Christie and Mr. Patrick Flynn (sons-in-law)....Austin McGrath and Gerald Flynn (grandsons), Eileen Flynn (granddaughter)".

  73 M vii
Joseph O'HARA was born 21 Oct 1883 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died 30 Apr 1912 in Philadelphia and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Philadelphia.

A Joseph O'Hara, son of Roger and Elizabeth O'Hara from Cootehall, Co. Roscommon emigrated to the United States in 1911 aged about 23. Although a family source has provided us with a birth year of 1883 for our Joseph (which would have made him about 28 years of age in 1911), it seems very likely this is our Joseph above, especially in light of the fact that the Joseph who emigrated had a brother named William as did ours.

Assuming it was our Joseph who emigrated, here are his immigration details:

Joseph, accompanied by an Annie O'Hara (relationship to Joseph unknown) who was aged about 60, arrived in Philadelphia on 28 March 1911 and were met by a Hubert O'Hara (relationship to Joseph and Annie unknown).

12. Maria O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 1825.

Maria is listed in the 1901 census as a 75-year-old widow living in Brackloon in the parish of Tumna, Co. Roscommon. Also listed with Maria is Mary Kermoy, her 10-year-old granddaughter.

Maria married William MAXWELL on 26 Jan 1852. William died before 1902.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were James Maxwell and Catherine O'Hara.

Sponsors at Catherine's baptism were Thomas McDermott and Catherine O'Hara,

13. Patrick O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ).

It's thought Patrick farmed in the townland of Cleigna (also spelled Clegna) in Cootehall.

Patrick married Margaret MEEHAN on 2 Feb 1852 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Margaret was born about 1834.

Could Margaret have been related to Ellen Meehan who married Laurence O'Hara, uncle of  Margaret's husband, Patrick?

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Patrick Meehan and Roger O'Hara.

Patrick and Margaret had the following children:

  83 M i
John O'HARA was born about 5 Jun 1853 and was christened 5 Jun 1853.

Sponsors at John's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Joanna O'Hara.
  84 M ii
Roger O'HARA was born about 9 Nov 1854 and was christened 9 Nov 1854.

Sponsors at Roger's baptism were William Maxwell and Anne Meehan.

It's possible Roger married a woman named Winifred because the 1901 census shows a return for the household of a Roger O'Hara, aged 50, of Clegna, Cootehall (Ardcarn), where it's believed the father of our Roger used to farm. Listed with Roger in the census are his wife, Winifred, aged 45, and a servant. Another possibility is that the Roger from the census is Roger, son of Patrick O'Hara and Honoria Lavin of Clegna, who was born in 1846.
  85 M iii
Michael O'HARA was born about 12 Aug 1858 and was christened 12 Aug 1858.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were Michael O'Hara and Maria Parthalan.
  88 F vi
Teresa O'HARA was born about 20 Aug 1864 and was christened 20 Aug 1864.

Sponsors at Teresa's baptism were William Maxwell and Eleanor O'Hara.
  89 M vii
William O'HARA was born about 22 Dec 1866 and was christened 22 Dec 1866.

Sponsors at William's baptism  were Roger O'Hara and Johanna O'Hara.

It's possible William married a woman named Eliza because the 1901 census shows a return for the household of a William O'Hara, aged 32, of Clegna, Cootehall (Ardcarn). Listed with William are his wife, Eliza, aged 26, and his father, a widower, named Patrick, aged 75.
  90 M viii
Joseph O'HARA was born 2 Sep 1868 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 6 Sep 1868 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Joseph's baptism were Roger O'Hara and Elizabeth Meehan.
  91 F ix
Margaret O'HARA was born about 30 Jul 1870 and was christened 30 Jul 1870.

Sponsors at Margaret's baptism were James Campbell and Brigid Cryan.
  92 F x
Mary / Maria O'HARA was born about 7 Feb 1872 and was christened 7 Feb 1872.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were Patrick Maxwell and Anne O'Hara.

Sponsors at Elizabeth's baptism were Roger O'Hara and Catherine O'Hara.
  94 F xii
Eleanor O'HARA was born about 12 Jul 1877 and was christened 12 Jul 1877.

Sponsors at Eleanor's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Catherine O'Hara.

14. Catherine O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ).

According to her marriage certificate, Catherine's residence prior to her marriage was Ardcarn (Cootehall).

Catherine married James TOBIN, son of James TOBIN, on 27 Apr 1861.

According to his marriage certificate, James's residence prior to his marriage was Ardcarn (Cootehall).

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Robert Dayly, Ardcarn, and Maria Fanning, Ardcarn.

James and Catherine had the following children:

  95 F i
Mary Eleanor TOBIN was born about 23 Feb 1862 and was christened 23 Feb 1862.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were William O'Hara and Eleanor Tobin.
  96 F ii
Brigid TOBIN was born about 22 Oct 1863 and was christened 22 Oct 1863.

Sponsors at Brigid's baptism were John Daly and Maria O'Hara.

17. Roger O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ).

According to his marriage certificate, Roger's residence prior to his marriage was Oxhill (there's an Oxhill in the parish of Knockvicar in Boyle, Co. Roscommon).

There's a census return for the household of a Roger O'Hara (aged 54) of Knockaduff, Ardcarn (Cootehall) with a wife named Catherine (50), and children, Mary (27), Patrick (20), Kate (22), Michael (18), and a grand-daughter, Mary Ellen Flanagan (4). Because our Roger's father farmed in Knockaduff, there's a possibility that the Roger in the census could be our Roger, above. However, with the exception of Patrick, there's no match between the children's names listed on the census return and the list provided by the family (see below). Furthermore, the Patrick from the census was born about 1880 whereas Patrick, son of Roger above, was born in 1872.

Roger married Catherine MCGREEVEY on 11 Aug 1869 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

They had the following children:

  97 M i
Patrick O'HARA was born about 9 Apr 1872 and was christened 9 Apr 1972.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were Thomas Maxwell and Mary McGreevey.
  98 M ii
Anne O'HARA was born about 24 Jul 1873 and was christened 24 Jul 1873.

Sponsors at  Anne's baptism were Patrick O'Hara and Maria Murry.
  99 M iii
Joseph O'HARA was born about 26 Jan 1877 and was christened 26 Jan 1877.

Sponsors at Joseph's baptism were John Hanahy and Anne O'Hara.
  100 F iv
Elizabeth O'HARA was born about 16 Feb 1879 and was christened 16 Feb 1879.

Sponsors at Elizabeth's baptism were Patrick McGreevey and Margaret O'Hara.

18. Michael O'HARA (Patrick O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 1841 in prob Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died about 1921 in Moigh, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Michael farmed at Moigh in Cootehall.

Further information on the descendants of Michael and his wife, Brigid Hogg, is available from Niall McCormick, a great-grandson of theirs, who has put his family tree on the Genes Reunited and Ancestry websites (www.genesreunited.co.uk and www.ancestry.co.uk respectively). Niall can be contacted at niallmccormick@talktalk.net.

Michael married Brigid HOGG, daughter of James HOGG, on 23 Apr 1868 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Brigid was born May 1851 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died 1931 in Moigh, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

At the time of the death of Brigid's mother-in-law Honoria O'Hara (née Lavin) in 1896 Brigid and Michael were living in Lake View, Cootehall. They were still in Lake View at the time of the untimely death of their daughter Annie in 1901.

Hogg researchers may also be interested in baptismal records found for a Josephine Hogg and a Patrick Hogg, children of James Hogg and Joanna Flynn of Cootehall. Josephine was baptised on 30 April 1843 with sponsors James Moraghan and Brigid Flynn, and Patrick was baptised on 5 July 1845 with sponsors Michael Tansey and Brigid Doyle. James was the name of the father of Brigid Hogg, above, so it's possible Josephine and Patrick could have been siblings of Brigid. We also know of a John Hogg in Cootehall who could have been a been a brother of Josephine and Patrick and/or Brigid. John married a Johanna O'Farrell and they had a son, Andrew, in 1878. Descendants of Mary 'Mud' O'Hara (1863-1941) remember a relative of hers named Andrew Hogg (who served in the RIC), so it seems likely that the Andrew born in 1878 was connected to her, possibly being the husband of her niece Mary Jane O'Hara (born 1882).

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were William O'Hara (Cleigna) and Mary Dunn.

Michael and Brigid had the following children:

+ 101 F i Honoria (Nora) Jane O'HARA was born about 8 Oct 1869.

James married Rose Anne FOLEY, daughter of 'unknown' FOLEY, about 1890.

Rose Anne's brother Michael married Katie O'Hara, Rose Anne's sister-in-law.

Rose Anne and James had no children.
+ 107 M vii William O'HARA was born about 24 May 1880.

Aloysius O'HARA was born about 1897 in prob. Moigh, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Aloysius, who may also have gone by the name of Louis, emigrated to Australia. Late in life he married a widow who had already had children.

28. Margaret O'HARA (Laurence O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 10 May 1851 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 10 May 1851. She died 28 May 1940 in Derrynargon, Keadue, Co. Roscommon and was buried in Jamestown Cemetery, Co. Leitrim.

Witnesses to the marriage of Margaret and Owen were James Barrett and Bridget O'Hara, Bridget presumably being Margaret's sister.

Owen and Margaret farmed in the townland of Cloonfeacle near Carrick-on-Shannon.

Margaret died at the home of her daughter Linda Molloy.

Note: The O'Hara family is twice connected to another family being researched - the Gordons of Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Margaret O'Hara's daughter, Mary Morahan, married Cormac Gordon whose older sister, Bridget Gordon, was married to Margaret's younger brother, Laurence O'Hara.

Margaret married Owen MORAHAN, son of John MORAHAN and Mary BERTRIDGE, on 4 Feb 1975 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Owen was born Dec 1842 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 12 Dec 1842 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 3 Feb 1928 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

The only baptismal record found by the Leitrim Genealogy Centre for an Owen Morahan baptised in Kiltoghert gives a baptismal date of 12 December 1842 and parents' names of John Morahan and Mary RUTLEDGE (sponsors were Mathew Gaffney and Ann Jones). The genealogist from the Leitrim Genealogy Centre thinks that 'Rutledge' should actually read 'Bertridge' given the similarity between the names and the fact that there's no evidence of any more baptisms around that time in Kiltoghert where the mother was Mary Rutledge. Nor is there any record of a marriage in Kiltoghert between a John Morahan and a Mary Rutledge whereas a marriage did take place between John or James Morahan (it's unclear on the actual certificate) and Mary Bertridge on 24 March 1836 in Kiltoghert. Furthermore Owen's date of baptism doesn't conflict with the baptism dates of John Morahan's and Mary Bertridge's other children, or with their date of marriage.

Note: In some documents, Owen is listed as "Eugene" (these names are interchangeable in Irish families).

They had the following children:

+ 115 M i John MORAHAN was born 17 Nov 1875 and died 24 Jan 1953.
+ 116 F ii Mary MORAHAN was born Aug 1877 and died 20 Jan 1932.

Lawrence (Larry) A. MORAHAN was born May 1881 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 8 May 1881 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 29 Jul 1970 in Roebuck Road, Dublin.

Sponsors at Larry's baptism were Michael Hunt and Ellen O'Hara.

Larry became a schoolteacher and it's known he was teaching in Dublin in 1903. Sometime afterwards he emigrated to the United States and we know that in 1906 he was living in Butte, Montana where a very large number of Irish were living at the time, attracted by the plentiful supply of jobs in mining. Larry himself worked for the Irish-run nationalist Butte Independent newspaper ("Published Every Saturday by Mulcahy, Morahan and Hunt").  A copy of the paper from January 1911 includes the Morahan name in the list of publishers, indicating he was still in Butte at that time, but later that year he moved to Houston, Texas - Ellis Island records show that his brother Paddy, who arrived in New York in October,  was planning to join him there. Larry became naturalised in Houston on 9 May 1912. It's believed he continued to work in the newspaper business in Houston. Larry eventually returned to Ireland and lived in Galway. Much later he moved to a nursing home in Roebuck Road in Dublin, where he died aged 89.

Lawrence married Mary T. (Molly) HURLEY. Mary was born 1889. She died 14 Jan 1951 in Galway.

Larry and Molly had no children.
+ 119 F v Bridget Linda (Linda) MORAHAN was born Mar 1883 and died 30 Apr 1958.

Eugene MORAHAN was born 15 May 1885 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 28 Jul 1935 in 283 Tara St., San Francisco.

Eugene emigrated to the United States in April 1909 and made his way to Butte, Montana where his brother Laurence was living. From his Declaration of Intention (to become a US citizen) made in Montana in March 1911, we know that Eugene was working as a miner in Butte at the time and that he was was 5ft 11ins tall and had light brown hair and blue eyes.

Sometime prior to 1920 Eugene moved to San Francisco where it's known he worked as a foreman in the shipyards, a steelworker, an automobile mechanic and eventually a labourer. At some point during the 1920s he visited his brother Michael in Denver and gave each of Michael's children $5, a big sum in those days.

Eugene died tragically at the age of 50 when a fire broke out at his home on Tara St. in San Francisco. His wife, Margaret, was away, visiting in the San Mateo area, when in the early hours of Sunday, 28 July 1935 the fire department was alerted to the fire at 283 Tara St. It's believed Eugene had been smoking his pipe and listening to the radio as usual in the sitting room before going to bed and that the blaze was caused by the pipe which had been left in the sitting room. The fire was confined to the sitting room but Eugene died from "carbon monoxide poisoning, first and second degree burns to his face, arms, chest and legs". The coroner's report adds that "a quart bottle containing some wine was found in the bedroom".

Eugene married Margaret CLAFFEY, daughter of 'unknown' CLAFFEY and Bridget 'UNKNOWN', on 15 Feb 1920 in St. Michael's Church, San Francisco. Margaret was born about 1884 in Athlone, Co. Westmeath. She died after 28 Jul 1935.

Margaret and Eugene had no children.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Eugene and Margaret were Thomas Nerney and Agnes Naylor.

Patrick (Paddy) A. MORAHAN was born 21 Oct 1887 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 23 Oct 1887 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 5 Mar 1965 in Houston, Texas and was buried 8 Mar 1965 in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston, Texas.

Sponsors at Paddy's baptism were John Morahan and Mary Hunt.

Paddy emigrated to the United States in 1911. According to Ellis Island records, he and his sister-in-law, Emily, (wife of his brother, Michael) travelled together, arriving in New York on 5 October 1911. On the ship manifest, Paddy's occupation was given as "clerk" and his final destination was Houston, Texas where his brother, Lawrence, lived. There's another Ellis Island record showing a re-entry to the US. for Paddy on 20 November 1922. By this time his home was Houston and he was a US citizen having been naturalised in 1920.  From Paddy's Declaration of Intention (to become an US citizen) made in Houston in January 1914, we know he was 5ft 9ins and had brown hair and grey eyes.

Paddy worked as a salesman for Standard Printing and Litho in Houston from 1911 until 1947 and then as a salesman for two other companies until 1962.

Paddy's death was due to a heart attack. He died in Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston.

Patrick married Opal Emma COLLIER, daughter of George Wesley COLLIER and Sarah SANDERS, on 29 Jul 1947 in County Clerk's Office, Houston, Texas. Opal was born 5 May 1906 in Oklahoma. She died 5 Jul 1974 in 4404 Junius St., Dallas, Texas and was buried 12 Jul 1974 in Dallas City Cemetery.

Opal had been married before but the marriage had ended in divorce. From her death certificate we know she had worked as a clerk in a drug store. The cause of death was "arteriosclerotic heart disease".

William MORAHAN was born 20 Sep 1889 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 21 Sep 1889 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 24 Apr 1912 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was buried in Jamestown, Co. Leitrim.

William died of pneumonia aged only 22.

Margaret (Gretta) Mary MORAHAN was born Jun 1894 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 23 Jun 1894 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She died 1 Jan 1912 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Gretta died of TB although the cause of death given on her death certificate is nephritis, the duration of which was a year. She was only 17 years of age when she died.

31. Laurence O'HARA (Laurence O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 30 Mar 1856 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 30 Mar 1856. He died 12 Jan 1928 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Laurence and Elizabeth were twins.

Sponsors at  Laurence's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Winifred Hunt.

The O'Hara family is twice connected to another family being researched - the Gordon family of Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Laurence married Bridget Gordon; and Mary Morahan, a niece of Laurence, married Bridget's younger brother, Cormac.

Laurence married Bridget (Bea) GORDON, daughter of Thomas GORDON and Anne FOLEY, on 18 Jul 1886 in Fairymount Church. Bridget was born 7 Jun 1859 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon and was christened 11 Jun 1859 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. She died 5 Sep 1949 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

There's a record in the LDS Vital Records Index for the christening in Loughglynn of a Bridget Gordon, daughter of Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley. The date of the christening ties in with the date of birth provided by the family (June 1859) and not with the information on Kathleen in the 1901 census which indicates that she was born about 1865.

They had the following children:

  125 M i
John Gordon O'HARA was born about 1 Nov 1887 in prob. Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 1 Nov 1887 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died young.
+ 126 F ii Evelyn Mary O'HARA was born about 13 Jul 1889 and died date unknown.
  127 F iii
Florence Mary (Sr. Margaret) O'HARA was born about 14 Mar 1891 in prob. Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 14 Mar 1891 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died 1968.

Joseph O'HARA was born about 21 May 1892 in prob. Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 21 May 1892 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died possibly before 1902.

Joseph's name isn't among the names of Bea's and Laurence's children as provided by the family, nor is he listed in the 1901 census. However a baptismal record for a Joseph O'Hara, born to Laurence O'Hara and Bridget Gordon, was located by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company. It's possible that Joseph died as a child. A sister named Josephine was born a year and a half later - perhaps she was named in memory of Joseph.
