  67 M v
Joseph O'HARA was born about 1886 in Cuilbalkeen, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

11. Roger (Rossy) O'HARA (William O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 17 Feb 1844 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 17 Feb 1844. He died after 1919 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Rossy's baptism were Roger O'Hara and Maria Moran.

Rossy, aged 57, is listed in the 1901 census with his wife, Elizabeth and their 19-year-old son Patrick in the townland of Cloongreaghan in Cootehall. He is listed again in the 1911 census with Elizabeth, Patrick and a 16-year-old niece named Maggie McLoughlin. According to the 1911 census, Roger and Elizabeth had been married for 43 years and had six children born alive, all six of whom were still alive at the time of the census. This does not tie in with information I received from a family source who told me they had seven children (no names were known).

Roger married Elizabeth (Lizzie) LAVIN, daughter of Luke LAVIN and Brigid STAPLETON, on 29 Jun 1868 in Kilmore Chapel, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. Elizabeth was born 1846 in Ardgallagher, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. She died 15 Nov 1919 in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Lizzie was a sister of Patrick Lavin of Ardgallagher, Kilmore who married Rossy's niece Jane O'Hara.

They had the following children:

  68 F i
Anne O'HARA was born about 8 Feb 1872 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 8 Feb 1872.

Sponsors at Anne's baptism were William O'Hara and Brigid Stapleton.

Anne married a Chris Bury or a T. Christie. We know this from her mother's obituary in The Roscommon Herald of 29 November 1919 in which the list of chief mourners included "...Mrs. John McGrath (Elphin), Mrs. Chris Bury and Mrs. Patrick Flynn, Cootehall (daughters): Mr. John McGrath, Mr. T. Christie and Mr. Patrick Flynn (sons-in-law)....Austin McGrath and Gerald Flynn (grandsons), Eileen Flynn (granddaughter)" and we know that Anne's sisters Ellen and Elizabeth were married to John McGrath and Patrick Flynn respectively. It's possible Chris Bury and T. Christie are the same person (assuming a typographical error in the obituary) but if not, then Anne had another sister whose name we don't know.

I had thought that Anne had a sister named Mary as her brother William in Philadelphia used to mention a sister named Mary to his family. However, according to the 1911 census, Anne's parents, Rossy and Lizzie O'Hara, had six children born alive, all six of whom were alive at the time of the census. Including Mary would bring the number of children to seven, so there is clearly an error in the information shown here on the family of Rossy and Lizzie. Corrections would be most welcome.
+ 69 M ii William J. O'HARA was born about 9 Jul 1873 and died 26 Nov 1931.
+ 70 F iii Ellen O'HARA was born about 1877 and died date unknown.
+ 71 F iv Elizabeth O'HARA was born about 21 Jan 1878.
  72 M v
Patrick O'HARA was born about 1881 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.
  73 M vi
Joseph O'HARA was born 21 Oct 1883 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died 30 Apr 1912 in Philadelphia and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Philadelphia.

A Joseph O'Hara, son of Roger and Elizabeth O'Hara from Cootehall, Co. Roscommon emigrated to the United States in 1911 aged about 23. Although a family source has provided us with a birth year of 1883 for our Joseph (which would have made him about 28 years of age in 1911), it seems very likely this is our Joseph above, especially in light of the fact that the Joseph who emigrated had a brother named William as did ours.

Assuming it was our Joseph who emigrated, here are his immigration details:

Joseph, accompanied by an Annie O'Hara (relationship to Joseph unknown) who was aged about 60, arrived in Philadelphia on 28 March 1911 and were met by a Hubert O'Hara (relationship to Joseph and Annie unknown).

12. Maria O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 1825 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Brackloon, Tumna, Co. Roscommon.

Maria is listed in the 1901 census as a 75-year-old widow living in Brackloon in the parish of Tumna, Co. Roscommon. Also listed with her is her 10-year-old granddaughter Mary, whose surname could be Kermoy or Kennedy or Keveney. Maria is listed alone at the same address in the 1911 census.

Maria married William MAXWELL on 26 Jan 1852. William died before 31 Mar 1901.

Maxwell researchers may be interested in information received from Ellen Brewin in Illinois on her Maxwell ancestors. Ellen's great-great-grandmother was Catherine Maxwell who was born around 1823 but her parents' names are unknown. Catherine married a Michael Coleman in 1841 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She died around 1888 and is buried, along with Michael, in Estersnow Cemetery, not far from Boyle. Their descendants who emigrated went mainly to Taunton and Leominster, both in Massachusetts. Ellen wonders if her ancestors were connected to the Maxwell family who are mentioned in David Thomson's book, 'Woodbrook', an account of the author's time as tutor in the 1930s to the Kirkwood children of the Woodbrook estate, located between Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon. Mr. Thomson states that Michael Maxwell's family lived "on the other side of Drumharlow and the Boyle River". If anyone has any information on Ellen's Maxwell ancestors, could you please contact me at Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com and I will pass it on.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were James Maxwell and Catherine O'Hara.

William and Maria had the following children:

  74 M i
Thomas MAXWELL was born about 11 Dec 1853 and was christened 11 Dec 1853.

Sponsors at Thomas's baptism were Patrick O'Hara and Mary Anne O'Hara.

We know Thomas emigrated to the United States because an 1880 census record has been located for him (and his brother Patrick) in the household of his aunt Anne (née O'Hara) and her husband, John Ryan, in Jersey City, New Jersey.
  75 M ii
Patrick MAXWELL was born about 4 Feb 1855 and was christened 4 Feb 1855.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were Michael O'Hara and Anne Murry.

We know Patrick emigrated to the United States because an 1880 census record has been located for him (and his brother Thomas) in the household of his aunt Anne (née O'Hara) and her husband, John Ryan, in Jersey City, New Jersey.

  82 F ix
Catherine MAXWELL was born 24 May 1870 in Brackloon, Tumna, Co. Roscommon and was christened 25 May 1870 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Catherine's baptism were Thomas McDermott and Catherine O'Hara,

13. Patrick O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ) was born in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

It's thought Patrick farmed in the townland of Cleigna (also spelled Clegna) in Cootehall.

Patrick married Margaret MEEHAN on 2 Feb 1852 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Margaret was born about 1834.

Could Margaret have been related to Ellen Meehan who married Laurence O'Hara, uncle of Margaret's husband, Patrick?

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Patrick Meehan and Roger O'Hara.

Patrick and Margaret had the following children:

  83 M i
John O'HARA was born about 5 Jun 1853 and was christened 5 Jun 1853.

Sponsors at John's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Joanna O'Hara.
  84 M ii
Roger O'HARA was born about 9 Nov 1854 and was christened 9 Nov 1854.

Sponsors at Roger's baptism were William Maxwell and Anne Meehan.

It's possible Roger married a woman named Winifred because the 1901 census shows a return for the household of a Roger O'Hara, aged 50, of Clegna, Cootehall (Ardcarn), where it's believed the father of our Roger used to farm. Listed with Roger in the census are his wife, Winifred, aged 45, and a servant. Another possibility is that the Roger from the census is Roger, son of Patrick O'Hara and Honoria Lavin of Clegna, who was born in 1846.
  85 M iii
Michael O'HARA was born about 12 Aug 1858 and was christened 12 Aug 1858.

Sponsors at Michael's baptism were William O'Hara and Maria Maxwell.

Sponsors at James's baptism were William O'Hara and Anne O'Hara.
  87 M v

Sponsors at Teresa's baptism were William Maxwell and Eleanor O'Hara.
  89 M vii
William O'HARA was born about 22 Dec 1866 and was christened 22 Dec 1866.

Sponsors at William's baptism  were Roger O'Hara and Johanna O'Hara.

It's possible William married a woman named Eliza because the 1901 census shows a return for the household of a William O'Hara, aged 32, of Clegna, Cootehall (Ardcarn). Listed with William are his 26-year-old wife, Eliza, and his father, 75-year-old widower named Patrick. Ten years later the same household has the following listed:
Patrick (84)
William (46), son
Lizzie (40), daughter-in-law
Lawrence (10), grandson
Margaret M. (8), granddaughter
William and Lizzie had been married 11 years and had five children born alive, only two of whom were still alive at the time of the census.
  90 M viii
Joseph O'HARA was born 2 Sep 1868 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 6 Sep 1868 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Joseph's baptism were Roger O'Hara and Elizabeth Meehan.

Sponsors at Elizabeth's baptism were Roger O'Hara and Catherine O'Hara.
  94 F xii
Eleanor O'HARA was born about 12 Jul 1877 and was christened 12 Jul 1877.

Sponsors at Eleanor's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Catherine O'Hara.

15. Catherine O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 1837 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon.

According to her marriage certificate, Catherine's residence prior to her marriage was Ardcarn (Cootehall).

Catherine married James TOBIN, son of James TOBIN, on 27 Apr 1861. James was born about 1836 in probably Cootehall area, Co. Roscommon. He died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon.

According to his marriage certificate, James's residence prior to his marriage was Ardcarn (Cootehall).

In the 1901 census, James's age is given as 60, Catherine's as 56 and their son James's as 27. However their ages are given in the 1911 census as 74, 73 and 42 respectively. We also told in the 1911 census that James and Catherine had been married 50 years and had nine children born alive, all nine of whom were still alive at the time of the census.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Robert Dayly, Ardcarn, and Maria Fanning, Ardcarn.

James and Catherine had the following children:

  95 F i

  96 F ii
Brigid TOBIN was born about 22 Oct 1863 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon and was christened 22 Oct 1863. She died after 2 Apr 1911.

Sponsors at Brigid's baptism were John Daly and Maria O'Hara.
  97 iii
'unknown' TOBIN was born in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon. 'unknown' died after 2 Apr 1911.
  98 iv

  99 M v
James TOBIN was born about 1868 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon. He died after 2 Apr 1911.

James married Ann (Annie) 'UNKNOWN' about 1903. Ann was born about 1876 in Co. Roscommon.

According to the 1911 census, Annie and James had been married for eight years and had no children.
  100 vi
'unknown' TOBIN was born in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon. 'unknown' died after 2 Apr 1911.

  102 viii
'unknown' TOBIN was born in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon. 'unknown' died after 2 Apr 1911.
  103 ix
Elizabeth (Lizzie) TOBIN was born about 1881 in probably Tullyval, Oakport, Co. Roscommon. Elizabeth died after 2 Apr 1911.

16. Roger O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 1839 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died after 2 Apr 1911.

According to his marriage certificate, Roger's residence prior to his marriage was Oxhill (there's an Oxhill in the parish of Knockvicar in Boyle, Co. Roscommon).

There's a census return for the household of a Roger O'Hara (aged 54) of Knockaduff, Ardcarn (Cootehall) with a wife named Catherine (50), and children, Mary (27), Patrick (20), Kate (22), Michael (18), and a grand-daughter, Mary Ellen Flanagan (4). Because our Roger's father farmed in Knockaduff, there's a possibility that the Roger in the census could be our Roger, above. However, with the exception of Patrick, there's no match between the children's names listed on the census return and the list provided by the family (see below). Furthermore, the Patrick from the census was born about 1880 whereas Patrick, son of Roger above, was born in 1872. The same family is listed in the 1911 census (Roger, Catherine and children Patrick, Catherine and Michael) with the additional information that Roger and Catherine had been married for 41 years (which ties in perfectly with our Roger's date of marriage) and had eight children born alive, all of whom were still alive at the time of the census).

Roger married Catherine MCGREEVEY on 11 Aug 1869 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Catherine was born about 1837 in Co. Roscommon. She died after 2 Apr 1911.

They had the following children:

  104 i 'unknown' O'HARA

Sponsors at Joseph's baptism were John Hanahy and Anne O'Hara.
  110 F vii
Elizabeth O'HARA was born about 16 Feb 1879 in possibly Knockaduff, Oakport, Co. Roscommon and was christened 16 Feb 1879.

Sponsors at Elizabeth's baptism were Patrick McGreevey and Margaret O'Hara.
  111 viii
Michael O'HARA was born about 1882 in possibly Knockaduff, Oakport, Co. Roscommon.

18. Anne O'HARA (Roger O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 17 May 1846 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 17 May 1846.

Sponsors at Anne's baptism were Michael Fanning and Brigid Murry.

We know Anne emigrated to the United States because an 1880 census record has been located for her in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Anne married John RYAN. John was born in Ireland.

They had the following children:

  112 M i
John RYAN was born about 1876 in New York.
  113 M ii
William RYAN was born about 1878 in New Jersey.

Mary RYAN was born about 1878 in New Jersey.

19. Michael O'HARA (Patrick O'HARA , Mary ) was born about 1841 in probably Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died about 1921 in Moigh, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Michael farmed at Moigh in Cootehall.

Further information on the descendants of Michael and his wife, Brigid Hogg, is available from Niall McCormick, a great-grandson of theirs, who has put his family tree on the Ancestry website, www.Ancestry.co.uk. Niall can be contacted at niallmccormick@talktalk.net.

Michael married Brigid HOGG, daughter of James HOGG and Jane FLYNN, on 23 Apr 1868 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Brigid was born May 1851 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died 1931 in Moigh, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

At the time of the death of Brigid's mother-in-law Honoria O'Hara (née Lavin) in 1896 Brigid and Michael were living in Lake View, Cootehall. They were still in Lake View at the time of the untimely death of their daughter Annie in 1901.

The 1911 census shows Michael and Brigid living in Moigh, Cootehall with three of their children, James, Joseph and Aloysius. The census also tells us that Michael and Brigid had been married 43 years and had 14 children born alive, 10 of whom were still alive at the time of the census.

Hogg researchers may also be interested in baptismal records found for a Josephine Hogg and a Patrick Hogg, children of James Hogg and Johanna Flynn of Cootehall. Josephine was baptised on 30 April 1843 with sponsors James Moraghan and Brigid Flynn, and Patrick on 5 July 1845 with Michael Tansey and Brigid Doyle as sponsors. James was the name of the father of Brigid Hogg, above, so it's possible Josephine and Patrick could have been siblings of Brigid. We also know of a John Hogg in Cootehall who could have been a been a brother of Josephine and Patrick and/or Brigid. John married a Johanna O'Farrell and they had a son, Andrew, in 1878. Descendants of Mary 'Mud' O'Hara (1863-1941) remember a relative of hers named Andrew Hogg (who served in the RIC), so it seems likely that the Andrew born in 1878 was connected to her, possibly being the husband of her niece Mary Jane O'Hara (born 1882).
