DESCENDANTS OF 'unknown' MEEHAN (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Second Generation

2. Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN ('unknown' ) was born about 1818 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died after 1900 in possibly Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Ellen and Laurence farmed in the townlands of Cleigna (Clegna), Derrygirraun and Cloongreaghan in the Cootehall area of Co. Roscommon.

It has been suggested that Ellen was closely related to - perhaps a sister of - Winifred Meehan from Cootehall who married Thomas Logan.

And could Ellen have been related to Margaret Meehan who married Patrick O'Hara, nephew of Ellen's husband, Laurence?

Eleanor married Laurence O'HARA, son of Laurence O'HARA and Mary MCDONAGH, in probably early 1840s. Laurence was born 1815 in Co. Sligo, or Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died 1885 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

They had the following children:

  4 M i
William O'HARA was born Feb 1845 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened Feb 1845.

Sponsors at William's baptism were William O'Hara and Maria Bambrick.
  5 M ii
Patrick O'HARA was born about 28 Feb 1847 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 28 Feb 1847.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Anne Meehan.
+ 6 F iii Eleanor (Ellen) O'HARA was born about 23 Apr 1849.
+ 7 F iv Margaret O'HARA was born about 10 May 1851 and died 28 May 1940.
  8 M v
John O'HARA was born about 12 Sep 1852 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 12 Sep 1852.

Sponsors at John's baptism were Michael O'Hara and Margaret Meehan.
  9 F vi
Bridget O'HARA was born about 2 Feb 1854 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 2 Feb 1854.

Sponsors at Bridget's baptism were Patrick O'Hara and Catherine O'Hara.
+ 10 M vii Laurence O'HARA was born about 30 Mar 1856 and died 12 Jan 1928.
  11 F viii
Elizabeth O'HARA was born about 30 Mar 1856 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 30 Mar 1856.

Laurence and Elizabeth were twins.

Sponsors at Elizabeth's baptism were Patrick O'Hara and Maria Parthalan.
  12 M ix
Charles O'HARA was born about 17 Jun 1858 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 17 Jun 1858.

Sponsors at Charles's baptism were Thomas Moran and Eleanor O'Hara.

It's possible Charles emigrated to the United States because a 1920 census record has been located for a Charles O'Hara who is listed in the household of Joseph Richard Lavin (who would have been his first cousin twice removed) and his wife, Margaret (née Connolly), in District 4, Queens, New York.

3. Winifred MEEHAN (caution: exact realtionship to Ellen not verified) ('unknown' ) was born in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

It's fairly certain that Winifred and Ellen were related. They may have have been sisters but we're by no means sure. Based on the list of sponsors at the baptisms of Winifred's children, she (and Ellen?) possibly had other siblings named Eleanor, Lucy, Charles, Margaret, Bernard and Bridget.

Winifred married Thomas LOGAN.

It's thought Thomas may have farmed in the townland of Derrygirraun in Cootehall (Ardcarne). There's an entry in Griffiths Valuation for a Thomas Logan in Derrygirraun, and neighbours of his included Meehans who were probably related to Thomas's wife, Winifred Meehan. Another neighbour was Laurence O'Hara who would marry Ellen Meehan who it's thought might have been a close relative of Winifred.

Based on the list of sponsors at the baptisms of his children, Thomas possibly had brothers named Michael and Joseph.

According to the marriage record of his son, John, Thomas was a "surveyor" rather than a farmer.

They had the following children:

  13 M i
Joseph LOGAN was born Oct 1844 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 6 Oct 1844 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Joseph's baptism were Michael Logan and Eleanor Meehan.

Joseph married Anne MCGAVRAN, daughter of John MCGAVRAN, on 8 Feb 1869 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Witnesses to the marriage of Anne and Joseph were Martin Havaghy and Catherine McGavran. On the marriage certificate, Joseph's address is given as Glooria (near Boyle) and Anne's is Drinchivne. However I've been unable to find this townland/parish in any Roscommon townland list, although there is a townland called Drumshannagh near Boyle. Perhaps this is where Anne was from. On the civil record of the marriage, Anne's name is given as Bridget McGovern.
  14 M ii
James LOGAN was born Sep 1846 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 21 Sep 1846 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at James's baptism were Charles Meehan and Winifred McDermott.
+ 15 M iii John Joseph LOGAN was born Jan 1849 and died 1906.
  16 M iv
Thomas LOGAN was born Oct 1851 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 12 Oct 1851 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Thomas's baptism were Bernard Meehan and Bridget Meehan.
  17 M v
Peter LOGAN was born Aug 1854 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 20 Aug 1854 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Peter's baptism were Charles Meehan and Lucy Meehan. According to his marriage certificate (1886), Peter was a member of the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) and lived on Abbey Lane (presumably in Boyle or Cootehall). Witnesses to the marriage were James O'Hara and Ellie Duignan. A 1911 census record was located for a Peter Logan, a 54-year-old Roscommon-born RIC pensioner who was living with his wife, 42-year-old Longford-born Kate Agnes, on Carrick St., Kells, Co. Meath. Although our Peter's wife is believed to have been born in Co. Roscommon, it's likely the Peter from the census is our Peter above. According to the census, Peter and Kate Agnes had been married for 24 years but had no children.

Peter married Catherine (Kate) Agnes MCPARTLAND, daughter of Myles MCPARTLAND.

On their marriage certificate, Kate's address is given as Rockingham (near Boyle) and Peter's is Ardagh (also near Boyle). Kate was a sister of Anne, wife of Peter's brother John.

John LOGAN was born May 1857 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 6 May 1857 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

There's a baptismal record for a John Logan, born 1857 to Thomas Logan and Winifred Meehan (sponsors were Joseph Logan and Margaret Dolan). However Thomas and Winifred already had a son named John (born 1849) who married Anne McPartland in 1877. One could suggest that perhaps the John born in 1849 died as a child and it was the other John who married Anne. However according to the marriage certificate of John and Anne, John was aged 27 which ties in with being born in 1849. If it had been the younger John who married Anne, he would have been only 19 at the time which would have been very unusual. Perhaps both Johns went by both their first and middle names. It's not known what the middle name of the younger John was.

Elizabeth LOGAN was born about 1859.

On Elizabeth's marriage certificate (transcribed from the original), her address is given as "Drumchinne", but I've been unable to find a townland or parish of this name in Co. Roscommon. The closest match was the townland of Drumshannagh near Boyle.

Elizabeth married Thomas GLYNN, son of Patrick GLYNN, on 16 Feb 1880 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Thomas was born about 1855.

On Thomas's marriage certificate (transcribed from the original), his address is given as "Cuidera", but I've been unable to find a townland or parish of this name in Co. Roscommon.

Witnesses to the marriage were John Glynn and Anne Logan.

Note: A Jim Glynn from the Boyle area married an Evelyn Mary O'Hara from Cootehall around 1915 (the O'Haras being connected to the the Gordons and the Morahans, two other families being researched). Is it possible that Thomas and Jim might have been related?
  20 M viii
Charles LOGAN was born Jul 1860 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 15 Jul 1860 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Charles's baptism were Timothy Regan and Bridget Meehan.
  21 F ix
Anne LOGAN was born Apr 1863 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 23 Apr 1863 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Anne's baptism were James Connel and Mary Hayden.
