1. James MORRISON was born in 1806 in Straid, Clonmany, Co. Donegal. He died in 1881 in probably Straid, Clonmany, Co. Donegal. He was buried in Clonmany, Co. Donegal.
The Morrisons are an old Clonmany family. For several centuries they were employed by the Bishop of Derry to administer the monastery and church lands in Straid, in which capacity they became keepers of the Shrine of Miosach, a silver- and gold-plated box-shaped reliquary dating back to the 11th century and now held in the National Museum of Ireland. The shrine is associated with St. Columbkille and is thought to have contained one of his manuscripts. The inscription, in Irish, on the front of the piece tells us it was repaired or added to by Brian, son of Brian O Morrison, in 1534. Note from Helen: Although neither my husband nor I are descended from 'unknown' Morrison above, unknown's granddaughter Mamie Lynch married Tom McDonnell, my husband's first cousin once removed. In the course of my research into Tom's family, I was given valuable information on the Morrison family, hence its inclusion on the website.
