DESCENDANTS OF Joseph NOLAN (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Second Generation

4. Sarah NOLAN (Joseph ) was born 23 Dec 1864 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died possibly 1948 in possibly Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Unfortunately I have been unable to locate a 1911 census return for the household of Sarah and her husband, Nicholas. According to National Archives of Ireland online records, there were no returns at all from the townland of Lenamore. Nor was there a Nicholas or Sarah Madden listed at all in 1911 records for anywhere in Kerry.

Sarah married Nicholas MADDEN, son of Daniel MADDEN and Margaret MULVIHILL, on 14 Feb 1888 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Nicholas was born about 1846 in probably Kilgarvan, Lisselton, Co. Kerry. He died 23 Apr 1919 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was buried in Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

According to Nicholas's death certificate the cause of death was "probably paralysis, twelve months, no medical attendant".

I've been told that among the descendants of Sarah and Nicholas are two sisters, Mary and Sheila O'Sullivan (it has been suggested by family sources that they may be great-grandchildren). It's thought Mary lives in Limerick and it's known she has done genealogical research into the Nolan and/or Madden family. Contact with Mary would be most welcome.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Sarah and Nicholas were Daniel Madden and Katie Nolan (probably Sarah's sister).

Nicholas and Sarah had the following children:

  6 F i
Catherine (Katie) MADDEN was born 7 Dec 1888 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 11 Dec 1888 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died possibly 6 Nov 1962 and was buried in possibly Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

Catherine's baptismal sponsors were Daniel Madden and Catherine Nolan.

It's possible Catherine lived in Lenamore all her life and never married as a newspaper death notice has been located for a Miss Catherine Madden of Lenamore who died on 6 November 1962. She was a sister of a Rev. Joseph Madden of California and Sr. Mary Dolores of St. John's Convent, Tralee. This Catherine was buried in Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. She had other siblings as she was "deeply regretted by...sisters, brothers".
  7 F ii
Margaret (Maggie) MADDEN was born 27 Jan 1890 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 30 Jan 1890 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Margaret's baptismal sponsors were Cornelius Madden and Mary Barrett.
  8 F iii
Mary MADDEN was born 16 Jan 1892 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 19 Jan 1892 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Mary's baptismal sponsors were Edward Fitzgerald and Catherine Mulvihill.
  9 F iv
Sarah MADDEN was born 22 Jul 1893 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 23 Jul 1893 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Sarah's baptismal sponsors were Thomas Fitzmaurice and Margaret Shine.
  10 F v
Bridget MADDEN was born 9 Feb 1895 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 10 Feb 1895 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Bridget's baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Ahern and Bridget Madden.
  11 M vi
Daniel (Dan) MADDEN was born 3 Jun 1896 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 4 Jun 1896 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He died possibly before 19 Jan 1987.

Daniel's baptismal sponsors were Edmond Madden and Margaret Ahern.

Daniel married Kathleen MORAN (caution: not verified). Kathleen died 19 Jan 1987 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

I am only speculating that Daniel married Kathleen. I came across a death notice for a Kathleen Madden (née Moran) who died at her residence in Lenamore on 19 January 1987. According to the notice, Kathleen was the wife of the late Dan Madden and was "deeply regretted by her loving sister, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces", indicating that she and Dan may not have had children.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) MADDEN was born 30 Jan 1898 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 1 Feb 1898 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died 7 Apr 1922 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Elizabeth's baptismal sponsors were Thomas Healy and Mary Scanlon.

Elizabeth was only 24 years of age when she died.
  13 F viii
Ann (Annie) MADDEN was born 10 Jul 1899 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 11 Jul 1899 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Ann's baptismal sponsor was Margaret Madden (no second sponsor was recorded).

Joseph MADDEN (caution: not verified) was born possibly 1901 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He died 24 Sep 1969 in Well St., Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was buried in Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

We don't know for certain that Nicholas and Sarah had a son called Joseph, but they did have a daughter named Catherine and we know that a Miss Catherine Madden of Lenamore who died in 1962 (who is probably their daughter) had a brother named Joseph who was a priest in Sacramento, California. However further evidence is required to prove that Fr. Joseph was indeed a son of Nicholas and Sarah, hence the caution.

A death notice for Joseph, located in the Irish Independent online archives, tells us that he died suddenly on 24 September 1969 at the home of his sister Mrs. James Fitzgerald of Well St. Ballylongford.
  15 F x
Jane MADDEN (caution: not verified) was born possibly 1905 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died 22 Dec 1985.

We don't know for certain that Nicholas and Sarah had a daughter called Jane but I've been told that a Jane Madden who was married to a Dick Fitzgerald was somehow blood-related to Nicholas and Sarah, a daughter or granddaughter perhaps. I've also come across a Jane Fitzgerald (née Madden) who lived on Well St. in Ballylongford who was a sister of a Miss Catherine Madden of Lenamore. However this Jane was married to a James (rather than a Dick) Fitzgerald. Because there is some doubt regarding her connection, if any, to Nicholas and Sarah, I have added a caution.

Jane married Richard (Dick) or James FITZGERALD

5. Catherine (Katie) NOLAN (Joseph ) was born about 2 Mar 1867 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was christened 4 Mar 1867 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died 16 Oct 1904 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Katie's baptismal sponsors were Philip Healy and Jane Healy.

Katie was only 37 years of age when she died. According to her death certificate, the cause of death was "phthisis", which is a wasting disease of which tuberculosis is a form. She had been ill for a year.

Catherine married Richard SHANAHAN, son of John SHANAHAN and Mary WOULFE, on 23 Feb 1889 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Richard was born about 1848 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died 3 Apr 1924 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Richard farmed in Kilbaha West. According to his death certificate, he died of "influenza, bronco-pneumonia".

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Richard and Katie were John Shanahan and Catherine Nolan.

Richard and Catherine had the following children:

+ 16 F i Catherine (Babe) SHANAHAN was born 10 Nov 1891 and died 24 Jan 1986.
+ 17 F ii Ellen (Ellie) SHANAHAN was born 4 Aug 1893 and died 19 Apr 1991.
+ 18 F iii Bridget SHANAHAN was born 7 Apr 1895 and died 4 Feb 1949.
+ 19 M iv John (Jack) R. SHANAHAN was born 20 Oct 1896 and died 19 May 1974.
  20 M v
Joseph SHANAHAN was born 20 Dec 1897 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry and was christened 23 Dec 1897 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died young.

Joseph's baptismal sponsors were Maurice Healy and Mary Healy.

It's thought Joseph may have been born disabled. He died young.
