DESCENDANTS OF Laurence O'HARA (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Third Generation

(Continued)

28. Eleanor (Ellen) O'HARA (Laurence , Laurence ) was born about 23 Apr 1849 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 23 Apr 1849.

Sponsors at Ellen's baptism were Edward Walpole and Mary Anne O'Hara. Ellen's name on her baptismal certificate is Helena.

According to her marriage certificate, Ellen's residence prior to her marriage was Cleigna in Cootehall.

Eleanor married Patrick MULLANY on 13 Jan 1867. Patrick was born in Kilmactrany, Co. Sligo.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Michael O'Hara and Maria O'Hara.

Patrick and Eleanor had the following children:

+ 130 F i Mary Jane MULLANY was born about 1868 and died 29 Oct 1940/1941.

29. Margaret O'HARA (Laurence , Laurence ) was born about 10 May 1851 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 10 May 1851. She died 28 May 1940 in Derrynargon, Keadue, Co. Roscommon and was buried in Jamestown Cemetery, Co. Leitrim.

Witnesses to the marriage of Margaret and Owen were James Barrett and Bridget O'Hara, Bridget presumably being Margaret's sister.

Owen and Margaret farmed in the townland of Cloonfeacle near Carrick-on-Shannon.

Margaret died at the home of her daughter Linda Molloy.

Note: The O'Hara family is twice connected to another family being researched - the Gordons of Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Margaret O'Hara's daughter, Mary Morahan, married Cormac Gordon whose older sister, Bridget Gordon, was married to Margaret's younger brother, Laurence O'Hara.

Margaret married Owen MORAHAN, son of John MORAHAN and Mary BERTRIDGE, on 4 Feb 1875 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Owen was born Dec 1842 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 12 Dec 1842 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 3 Feb 1928 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

The only baptismal record found by the Leitrim Genealogy Centre for an Owen Morahan baptised in Kiltoghert gives a baptismal date of 12 December 1842 and parents' names of John Morahan and Mary RUTLEDGE (sponsors were Mathew Gaffney and Ann Jones). The genealogist from the Leitrim Genealogy Centre thinks that 'Rutledge' should actually read 'Bertridge' given the similarity between the names and the fact that there's no evidence of any more baptisms around that time in Kiltoghert where the mother was Mary Rutledge. Nor is there any record of a marriage in Kiltoghert between a John Morahan and a Mary Rutledge whereas a marriage did take place between John or James Morahan (it's unclear on the actual certificate) and Mary Bertridge on 24 March 1836 in Kiltoghert. Furthermore Owen's date of baptism doesn't conflict with the baptism dates of John Morahan's and Mary Bertridge's other children, or with their date of marriage.

Note: In some documents, Owen is listed as "Eugene" (these names are interchangeable in Irish families).

They had the following children:

+ 131 M i John MORAHAN was born 17 Nov 1875 and died 24 Jan 1953.
+ 132 F ii Mary MORAHAN was born Aug 1877 and died 20 Jan 1932.
+ 133 M iii Michael Joseph MORAHAN was born 13 Jul 1879 and died 7 Mar 1959.

Lawrence (Larry) A. MORAHAN was born May 1881 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 8 May 1881 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 29 Jul 1970 in Roebuck Road, Dublin.

Sponsors at Larry's baptism were Michael Hunt and Ellen O'Hara.

Larry became a schoolteacher and it's known he was teaching in Dublin in 1903. Sometime afterwards he emigrated to the United States and we know that in 1906 he was living in Butte, Montana where a very large number of Irish were living at the time, attracted by the plentiful supply of jobs in mining. Larry himself worked for the Irish-run nationalist Butte Independent newspaper ("Published Every Saturday by Mulcahy, Morahan and Hunt").  A copy of the paper from January 1911 includes the Morahan name in the list of publishers, indicating he was still in Butte at that time, but later that year he moved to Houston, Texas - Ellis Island records show that his brother Paddy, who arrived in New York in October,  was planning to join him there. Larry became naturalised in Houston on 9 May 1912. It's believed he continued to work in the newspaper business in Houston. Larry eventually returned to Ireland and lived in Galway. Much later he moved to a nursing home in Roebuck Road in Dublin, where he died aged 89.

Lawrence married Mary (Molly) T. HURLEY. Mary was born 1889. She died 14 Jan 1951 in Galway.

Larry and Molly had no children.
+ 135 F v Bridget Linda (Linda) MORAHAN was born Mar 1883 and died 30 Apr 1958.
  136 M vi
Eugene MORAHAN was born 15 May 1885 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 28 Jul 1935 in 283 Tara St., San Francisco.

Eugene emigrated to the United States in April 1909 and made his way to Butte, Montana where his brother Laurence was living. From his Declaration of Intention (to become a US citizen), made in Montana in March 1911, we know that Eugene was working as a miner in Butte at the time and that he was was 5ft 11ins tall with light brown hair and blue eyes.

Sometime prior to 1920 Eugene moved to the San Francisco area where it's known he worked as a foreman in the shipyards, a steelworker, an automobile mechanic and eventually a labourer. It's known he was living in San Mateo, south of San Francisco, in 1920. At some point during the 1920s he visited his brother Michael in Denver and gave each of Michael's children $5, a big sum in those days.

Eugene died tragically at the age of 50 when a fire broke out at his home on Tara St. in San Francisco. His wife, Margaret, was away at the time visiting in the San Mateo area, when in the early hours of Sunday, 28 July 1935 the fire department was alerted to the fire at 283 Tara St. It's believed Eugene had been smoking his pipe and listening to the radio as usual in the sitting room before going to bed and that the blaze was caused by the pipe which had been left smouldering in the sitting room. The fire was confined to the sitting room but Eugene died from "carbon monoxide poisoning, first and second degree burns to his face, arms, chest and legs".

Eugene married Margaret CLAFFEY, daughter of 'unknown' CLAFFEY and Bridget 'UNKNOWN', on 15 Feb 1920 in St. Michael's Church, San Francisco. Margaret was born about 1884 in Athlone, Co. Westmeath. She died after 28 Jul 1935.

Margaret and Eugene had no children.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Eugene and Margaret were Thomas Nerney and Agnes Naylor.

Patrick (Paddy) A. MORAHAN was born 21 Oct 1887 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 23 Oct 1887 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 5 Mar 1965 in Houston, Texas and was buried 8 Mar 1965 in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston, Texas.

Sponsors at Paddy's baptism were John Morahan and Mary Hunt.

Paddy emigrated to the United States in 1911. According to Ellis Island records, he and his sister-in-law, Emily, (wife of his brother, Michael) travelled together, arriving in New York on 5 October 1911. On the ship manifest, Paddy's occupation was given as "clerk" and his final destination was Houston, Texas where his brother, Lawrence, lived. There's another Ellis Island record showing a re-entry to the U.S. for Paddy on 20 November 1922. By this time his home was Houston and he was a U.S. citizen having been naturalised in 1920.  From Paddy's Declaration of Intention (to become an US citizen) made in Houston in January 1914, we know he was 5ft 9ins and had brown hair and grey eyes.

Paddy worked as a salesman for Standard Printing and Litho in Houston from 1911 until 1947 and then as a salesman for two other companies until 1962.

Paddy's death was due to a heart attack. He died in Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston.

Patrick married Opal Emma COLLIER, daughter of George Wesley COLLIER and Sarah SANDERS, on 29 Jul 1947 in County Clerk's Office, Houston, Texas. Opal was born 5 May 1906 in Oklahoma. She died 5 Jul 1974 in 4404 Junius St., Dallas, Texas and was buried 12 Jul 1974 in Dallas City Cemetery.

Opal had been married before but the marriage had ended in divorce. From her death certificate we know she had worked as a clerk in a drug store. The cause of death was "arteriosclerotic heart disease".

William MORAHAN was born 20 Sep 1889 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 21 Sep 1889 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died 24 Apr 1912 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was buried in Jamestown, Co. Leitrim.

William died of pneumonia aged only 22.
+ 139 M ix Thomas (Tom) J. MORAHAN was born 24 Jan 1891 and died 3 Apr 1949.

Margaret (Gretta) Mary MORAHAN was born Jun 1894 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and was christened 23 Jun 1894 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She died 1 Jan 1912 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Gretta died of TB although the cause of death given on her death certificate is nephritis, the duration of which was a year. She was only 17 years of age when she died.

32. Laurence O'HARA (Laurence , Laurence ) was born about 30 Mar 1856 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 30 Mar 1856. He died 12 Jan 1928 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Laurence and Elizabeth were twins.

Sponsors at  Laurence's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Winifred Hunt.

The O'Hara family is twice connected to another family being researched - the Gordon family of Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Laurence married Bridget Gordon; and Mary Morahan, a niece of Laurence, married Bridget's younger brother, Cormac.

Laurence married Bridget (Bea) GORDON, daughter of Thomas GORDON and Anne FOLEY, on 18 Jul 1886 in Fairymount Church. Bridget was born 7 Jun 1859 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon and was christened 11 Jun 1859 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. She died 5 Sep 1949 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

There's a record in the LDS Vital Records Index for the christening in Loughglynn of a Bridget Gordon, daughter of Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley. The date of the christening ties in with the date of birth provided by the family (June 1859) and not with the information on Kathleen in the 1901 census which indicates that she was born about 1865.

They had the following children:

  141 M i
John Gordon O'HARA was born about 1 Nov 1887 in probably Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 1 Nov 1887 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died young.
+ 142 F ii Evelyn Mary O'HARA was born about 13 Jul 1889 and died 1954.
  143 F iii
Florence Mary (Sr. Margaret) O'HARA was born about 14 Mar 1891 in probably Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 14 Mar 1891 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died 1968.
  144 M iv
Joseph O'HARA was born about 21 May 1892 in probably Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 21 May 1892 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died possibly before 1902.

Joseph's name isn't among the names of Bea's and Laurence's children as provided by the family, nor is he listed in the 1901 census. However a baptismal record for a Joseph O'Hara, born to Laurence O'Hara and Bridget Gordon, was located by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company. It's possible that Joseph died as a child. A sister named Josephine was born a year and a half later - perhaps she was named in memory of Joseph.
  145 F v
Josephine (Sr. Austin Camillus) O'HARA was born about 19 Nov 1893 in probably Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon and was christened 19 Nov 1893 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died 1983.

Sr. Austin Camillus was a member of the Sisters of Charity order.
