If James was, as we believe, married to Bridget Ahern, then we know he died before 15 Feb 1896 bcause that was the date that Bridget remarried (her second husband was Daniel Shine of Kilbaha).

James married Bridget AHERN (caution: not verified) about 1890 in probably Co. Limerick. Bridget was born about 1865 in Co. Limerick.

I'm not entirely certain that our James Shanahan, son of John Shanahan and Mary Woulfe of Kilbaha, married Bridget, hence the caution. However we do know that Bridget married a James Shanahan of Kilbaha, and since our James appears to have been the only James Shanahan of a similar age to Bridget living in Kilbaha around this time, I'm assuming that Bridget was married to our James.
